NICG Bi Elections for counsellor

The Nain Inuit Community Government is now accepting positions for Councillor for the upcoming by election.

The Bi Election will be held on June 20, 2019 at the Nain Inuit community Government office.

Nominations will be accepted beginning on Thursday May 23 from 9am to 4pm and will close on Thursday May 30.

Elections for the municipality of Nain should be in writing and shall state the name and residence of the candidate and shall be signed by the proposer and seconder, both of whom shall be present together with the candidate.

The qualifications of a candidate for election for the Inuit community council are as follows:

1. Eligible to be enrolled on the A voter’s toll in an election in the community in which he or she is nominated to serve as a councillor
2. Canadian citizen of the full age of 19
3. Ordinary resident in the community or area for at least six months prior to the date set for nominations.

The polling booths will be located at the Nain Inuit Community Government office.

Language Programming

The Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism at Nunatsiavut here in Nain is busy with programming.

Shirley Jararuse is the Language Program Coordinator for NG.

She says for the Language Summit is planned for Nov. 4-6 here in Nain and will be held at Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

The purpose for the summit is to develop a Language Strategy.

There will be 50 delegates including speakers, elders, youth, and ministers.

Jararuse says there will also be a logo contest planned to be used at the event and future events and programs and will look for updates as they become available.

Jararuse adds that they have ordered puppets from independent puppet makers, Trisha Laye and Kim Lea, of Hay River, NWT that just arrived last week.

She says they look like Inuit grandparents and will be known as “Anânsiak & Atâtsiak/Ânak”.

They will be used during play time for Language Nests and Day Cares in the Nunatsiavut region. Only Inuttitut must be used during this time.

The Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism found out about these puppets from an online article by CBC and got in touch with them to make them for them.

She says to keep a look out for notices for any upcoming naming contest to name the puppets in traditional Inuit names in Nunatsiavut.

Alana Johns, a retired linguist is in partnership with the Dept. of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, with the help of Rita Andersen are also planning to put phrases together and put in an Inuttitut phrase book as well as into an App for mobile devices.

And the upcoming events are the Master- Apprentice Inuttitut Program that will be restarting in September, Inuttitut Terminology Workshop in the fall or spring, and the date for for their pilot project; Inuttitut evening classes in Nain for 6 months are yet to be determined.

They are also working on a tentative workshop for September 20-22.

Last but not least, the IlinniaKatigennik are still on the lookout for Inuttitut story tellers or singers.

Nominations open for Okalakatiget Board of Directors

Nominations are now open for OKâlaKatiget Society Board of Directors for the towns of Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik and Upper Lake Melville.

Nominations opened on Monday May 20 and will close at noon on Monday May 27.

To be nominated, you must fill out a nomination form, which must be signed by a nominator and a seconder who are also Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries.

Nomination forms are available at the OK Society office in Nain and once completed must be returned to the office in Nain by noon Monday, May 27th.

Successful candidates will serve a two-year term.

Ski-Doo recalls 7,000 snowmobiles over fire hazard

Snowmobiles are being recalled by their manufacturers.

The 2017 Ski-Doo MXZ model, along with several others are being recalled over a potential fire hazard.

(Bombardier Recreational Products) Ski-Doo is recalling 7,025 snowmobiles over a potential fire hazard.

The 2017 Freeride, MXZ, Renegade, and Summit models with 850 E-TEC engines are affected.

According to the recall notice on the Transport Canada website, the issue is with the machines’ fuel hose connections, which could wear and leak fuel.

The recall was issued on March 29, and an interim repair was available starting on April 17.

A permanent repair won’t be available until July.

Owners should contact their local Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) dealer to have the repairs made.

“They’ll process each case individually and help finding the most efficient solution to fix their snowmobiles,” said a BRP spokesperson.

In a statement to CBC News, BRP said in cases where there is no dealership nearby, like nearly all Nunavut communities, Ski-Doo owners should contact BRP’s Customer service at 1-888-272-9222.

Man charged with attempted Murder

On Friday, May 10, 2019, RCMP in Happy Valley-Goose Bay received a report of a 29-year-old man recovering in hospital from a knife wound that required immediate medical attention.

A 31 year old Happy Valley-Goose Bay man, Michael Lidd was charged with attempted murder by the Nfld & Labrador Provincial Court followed by an investigation on Friday, May 17, 2019.

The Labrador General Investigation Section along with Forensic Identification Services and Police Dog Services conducted an extensive investigation into the incident. Later then, police arrested Mr. Lidd.

Following his court appearance on May 17, 2019 he was held in custody and will reappear in court on Tuesday, May 21st, 2019.

RCMP Investigating Human remains outside Makkovik

Today, Tuesday, May 21st, 2019 RCMP is investigating about human remains found outside Makkovik.

RCMP are investigating the findings of human remains just outside the community on Saturday, May 18, 2019.

The remains were sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Sunday, May 19th for autopsy and identification.

The investigation is ongoing.

Coastal Grads

The Grad students are very busy with preparing for their special day.

We contacted schools from the north coast.

The Cap and Gown was held at the BL Morrison School on Postville on May 16 and the Graduation was on May 17 of this year.

There are three students graduating this year and the theme was, “Oh the places we’ll go”.

The graduation at the Jens Haven Memorial School here in Nain was held this past Saturday, May 18.

There were 9 graduates who had their church service followed by a prom.

Their theme for this year is “We didn’t realize we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun”.

The Graduation ceremony, Prom, and Cap and Gown for this year in Rigolet will be held on Saturday, May 25th.

They have 2 grad students who will be graduating, and their theme is “Passport around the World”.

In Hopedale the Graduation ceremony and the Cap and Gown ceremony will be taking place on Saturday, June 1.

Dean Coombs the Principal at the Amos Comenius School in Hopedale.

He says nine students will be graduating this year, one female and eight male.

And their grad theme this year is “Vegas”.

Students head to their church service at 2pm then get their pictures done, then go to the reception and return to the school for their meal and ceremony.

Amalia McNeil the Clerk for the J.C. Erhardt Memorial School in Makkovik.

She says they don’t have any students who will be graduating this year.

New owner for Atsanik Lodge

This past February customers were wondering about this new name change for the Big Land General stores in Nain, Makkovik and Hopedale.

The Big Land General Stores recently had their name changed to the Franks General Store.

Patty Dicker is the new owner of the Franks General Store.

Dicker says she wanted to honour her father Frank, so she named the stores Franks General Store after her dad.

He was her role model and she wanted a way to keep his memory alive.

Dicker has also recently purchased the Atsanik Lodge hotel in Nain.

Nain RCMP Audio

The Nain RCMP Detachment is busy this fiscal year.

We spoke with Sgt. Nugent with the Nain RCMP Detachment.

Sgt. Nugent says they started patrolling the community of Nain and will be continuing regular check stops for impaired drivers.

He adds that the last physical year the Nain RCMP caught 22 impaired drivers.

Every year they hold an annual performance plan.
