Craft Night in Nain with DHSD

The Department of Health and Social Development in Nain will be holding craft night tonight.
Lisa Dicker is the Community Health worker for DHSD.
She will be holding a craft night every Friday night at 7pm at the DHSD Multipurpose room.
This craft night is open to men and women from the ages of 18 years and older.
They have materials such as:
Wool, Moose hide, Needles, Seal skin, Rabbit fur, Thread, Scissors, Duffle, Earring holders, Beads, Crochet hooks and Knitting needles.
You can take your own craft, or make your own.
You get to keep what you make, share patterns, no need to sign up.

Literacy Camp Counsellor

The Summer Literacy Camp will be going ahead again this summer.

We spoke with Mark Anto who is the Regional Camp Coordinator for Frontier College.

They have camps in 135 communities across Canada, and their main office in located in Montreal.

They hold and manage camps in the Cree and Inuit communities of Northern Quebec, in Nunavut and 4 here in Nunatsiavut.

He says they extended the deadline date for the Summer Literacy Camp Counsellor positions to ensure that they can hire enough counsellors.

Anto says they will have camps in Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik and Rigolet this summer.

Training will be in Makkovik on June 28-30 and then camp will start on July 8-26.

Camp will run from 9:30am-3:30pm every day and will take place at the school.

Right now, their teams are set in Makkovik and Rigolet, but they are looking for counsellors in Nain and Hopedale.

Puppet Contest

The Dept. of Culture, Recreation and Tourism has purchased new puppets to be used in the Language Nests and Day Care Centres to speak ONLY in Inuttitut to the children to promote Inuttitut in these spaces.

Shirley Jararuse is the Language Program Coordinator at the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says the puppets will be known as “Atâtsiak and Anânsiak/ Ânak”, or Grandfather and Grandmother, and they look like Inuit grandparents.

The contest details must be to choose a local traditional Inuit name such as Selma, Paulus, etc. for your community’s Atâtatsiak and Anânatsiak/Ânak.

The names chosen will be used as the grandparents’ names and you will win some great Inuttitut promotional items.

The deadline for this contest is June 14, 2019 at 4pm

Polar Bear Kills

The Polar Bear season will close on June 30, 2019.
Todd Broomfield is the Wildlife Manager for Nunatsiavut government.
He says for the north coast communities that the polar bear licences have been filled, except for the community of Postville.
Broomfield says they will be transferring one licence to the community of Nain, because the ice is deteriorating fast.
So, the polar bear season will close on June 30th or when the licences are filled.

New Ferry Rates

The Kamutik W is scheduled to set sail and begin servicing in Labrador in June.

According to the Government NL website, here are some of the new ferry rates for Labrador.

Passengers who will travel from Goose-Bay to Nain for one adult is now $99, and seniors ages 60 and up, and children ages 5 and up is now $69.30.

One adult passenger travelling to Goose-Bay to Natuashish is now $88.50, seniors ages 60 and up, and children ages 5 and up is now $61.95.

If you are travelling from Goose-Bay to Nain and or Goose-Bay to Natuashish the cabin rates for an economy cabin is now $253, for a standard cabin is now $338.50, and for a deluxe cabin is now $677.

IlinniaKatigennik Show

The OKâlaKatiget Society would like to remind our listeners that the last IlinniaKatigennik Show will be Tuesday, May 28, 2019 and will be off for the summer.

So the OK radio’s IlinniaKatigennik program that we air on Tuesday’s will be off the air until fourth week of September.

The First IlinniaKatigennik program will be on the air again September 24, 2019.

To replace the IlinniaKatigennik Program during our summer hours we will have the Music Hour from 3-4pm every Tuesday.

And please note that Shirley Jararuse will still be taking in any recordings of Inuttitut stories and songs.

The IlinniaKatigennik Show will resume on September 10, 2019.

Nain DHSD Programs (Audio)

The Department of Health and Social Development are also busy with their programs here in Nain.

We contacted Elsie Russell who is the Mental Health and Addictions Worker.

She says every Thursdays is Power Hour at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre here in Nain.

There are also programs such as parenting programs and healing programs.
