• Planning and conducting interviews and sources
• Outlining and writing scripts for editing
• Transcribing
• Digitally editing film on Avid software

Angajukkâk Update

The Nain Inuit Community Government is currently dealing with issues for the spring and summer of 2019.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKâk for the Nain Inuit Community Government.

He says there is a Town Clean up/Property Clean-up for the community with prizes to be won.

The ads are posted around town with the prizes.

Another issue they are dealing with are with the Bugdell’s.

He says that they are waiting on them to arrive to Nain and finish off their contract with their housing development and to put the roads back to the way they were.

And for the summer jobs, Dicker says they’re waiting for an approval for funding to hire summer students, and should find out within the next week or so.

As for the roads, they will be maintained regularly.

He adds that they are still waiting for the announcements from the Provincial Governments for approvals for any new projects and will let inform the OK Society once they becomes available.

Torngat Fisheries Meeting

The Torngat Fisheries Cooperative had their annual meetings recently in Postville and Hopedale.
Keith Watts is the General Manager.
He says they elected board members to attend the Annual General Meeting that will be held in Makkovik this year.
Watts adds there will be Scallop fishery this summer after the Char fishing, maybe in August.

Summer Hours

Summer hours are taking effect for most organizations in Nain On June 3rd.

OKâlaKatiget called the Nunatsiavut Government, and their summer hours will take effect June 3.

Their hours will be from 8:30 am to 4 pm.

The Nain Department of Health and Social Development’s summer hours are also in effect June 3rd.

Their hours are from 8:30 am to 4 pm.

OKâlaKatiget Society will also start theirs on Monday, June 3rd.

The radio department’s hours are from 9 am to 3:30 pm.

But the host for the 3 to 4 pm show will still be on the air until 4 pm.

The Nain Inuit Community government will also be starting their summer hours June 3rd.

Their office hours will be 8:30 am to 4pm.

Students on Ice

The Students on Ice (SOI) Foundation is an award-winning organization that has led more than 30 expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic.

Experiential education in the Polar Regions is SOI’s core program and key to bridging cultures and learning first-hand about climate change, ocean conservation, reconciliation and other pressing topics. Beyond expedition, the SOI Foundation connects people, organizations, and funding around ideas, initiatives and programs related to sustainability.

This year, the Students on Ice is looking to hire locally in Nain or Makkovik.

The position of E2C Local Coordinator is a 9 month paid part-time contract starting July 1, 2019 with the possibility for extension.

The position is community based, and would require the coordinator’s participation on the 2019 Arctic expedition, beginning with a few days of training in Ottawa, Ontario.

The qualifications include:

• 3 to 5 years relevant work and/or volunteer experience;
• Experience working with youth Nain OR Makkovik;
• Project management skills, demonstrated ability to prioritize, coordinate, delegate, and meet deadlines on multiple assignments;
• Computer literate and willingness to learn

Based off a 15 hours/week and depending on experience, the salary range is $36-$43/hr for 39 weeks.

TRHA Update

The Nain Local Housing Committee had some great news for new homeowners this week.

Margret Fox is the Chairperson for Torngat Regional Housing Association (TRHA).

She says four new homes will be built this year in Nain.

And the following families were selected to receive 4 bedrooms to new homes this year: Anna Obed and Sheldon Kalleo; Bill Webb and Shirley Harris, Miriam Lidd and Kitura Solomon.

She says one bedroom home will be build this year, and the selected individual who were selected were Liz Dicker and Elias Obed.

Fox says that repairs for homes will be identified once inspections are completed.

Fox added that an Annual General Meeting is scheduled for next month in Rigolet.

She says 4 homes in Nain will be reallocated.

Fox says the local housing committee are not completed and they will be holding more meetings to discuss about the repair selections.

And a new local housing committee is now put in place for Nain since last month.

The new local housing committee are: Margret Fox is the Chair person, Rodd Pilgrim is the Co-Chair, Jerry Hapgood is the sectary and Duane Metcalfe, Roxanne Andersen and Joey Angnatok.

They will be on the committee for a 2 year term.

Nanilavut Initiative

The Federal Government formed a new data base to help the Nanilavut initiative.

The Nunatsiavut Government recently hired a Nanilavut Project Manager.

We spoke with Cathy Ford the Nanilavut Project Manager.

She says she started her new position in November 2018.

Her office is located in Makkovik.

Nanilavut means “let us find them” in the Baffin dialect term.

Ford says her primary goal for the Nanilavut initiative is to help bring closure and begin the healing process for Inuit families and communities who have been searching for lost loved ones from that TB epidemic of the 1940s-1960s.

Nain man charged with Bootlegging

On May 22, the Nain RCMP with assistance from the Happy Valley-Goose Bay General Investigation Section executed a search warrant on a local residence after receiving information that alcohol was being bootlegged.

Martin Merkuratsuk, a 30-year-old man from Nain, was arrested and charged with selling contraband alcoholic liquor pursuant to the Liquor Control Act and failure to comply with an undertaking.

Merkuratsuk was released from custody on an undertaking and will appear in court at a later date.

A large quantity of illegal alcohol was subsequently seized at a residence in the community.

The investigation is continuing and anyone with information in relation to bootlegging in the community is asked to please call Nain RCMP at 709-922-2862.

LATP new career counsellor

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership is pleased to welcome their new Career Counsellor for the Nunatsiavut clients in Labrador.

This is a replacement for the position as the Career Counsellor while Janelle Barbour is on maternity leave.

Ocean Lane of Makkovik will be starting her new position as the Career Counsellor for Nunatsiavut.

Ocean will work out of Makkovik and right now they are still looking for office space and then will they will have a phone number.
