Nigivik Programs

The Nigivik Centre is also busy with their programs for this month.

According to their Nigivik calendar, they had soup for everyone just this dinner hour from 12-1pm.

Tomorrow Saturday, May 18, starting at 1pm will be Family Cooking Program.

On Tuesday, May 21st at 9am the Nigivik Centre will be making Banana Bread.

On the next day from 6-8pm is Youth Evening Program making cupcakes.

Every Thursdays, the Nigivik Centre partners with the DHSD and holds Power Hour from 12-1pm.

Family Baking program will be on Sunday, May 26 starting from 1-4pm.

And on Tuesday, May 28, at 9am is Bread Program.

So, anyone wanting to join in any of these programs or have any suggestions can go see Shelley Dicker, the Community Food Worker at the Nigivik Centre.

On March 8 the Provincial Government Launched Energy Efficiency Program for Oil Heated Homes.

The Provincial and Federal Governments are investing a total of $2 million over three years for the Energy Efficiency in Oil Heated Homes Program to lower greenhouse gas emissions and support clean economic growth. Funding is being provided through the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund.

The Provincial Government is contributing $1.54 million and the Federal Government is contributing $512,000 to provide rebates for insulation and programmable thermostats for customers who heat their homes with oil.

The program will be administered through takeCHARGE, an energy efficiency partnership between Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.

By 2030, the programs developed under the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund to date are expected to deliver 776,000 tonnes of cumulative greenhouse gas emission reductions and 187 direct person years of employment.

These programs build on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the economy and deliver better services and better outcomes for residents.

Makkovik DHSD Programs

The Makkovik Department of Health and Social Development are busy holding different programs and services in their community.

Linda Pottle is the Team Leader with DHSD.

She says yesterday they held a senior’s dinner at the DHSD at 12 noon.

And today they held a community lunch; the lunch was open to the public.

Pottle says during each dinner, there will be a short educational topic done.

And next week a wellness day will be held on May 22, a supper will be served starting at 5pm with a discussion on educational topics in regards to mental health.

On May 23 they will hold another senior’s dinner at noon.

On Saturday May 25 will be a movie night for women for ages 18 years and older
And refreshments will be available.

She says the youth groups are held every Mondays at 5:30pm for grades 4-6 and on Tuesday youth groups are held for grades 1 and 2 at 3pm, on Wednesdays the kindergarten youth groups are held at 3pm.

They also hold radio shows on Wednesday and Friday mornings, CHW always on a health topic.

And on May 30 the meals for men program will go ahead at 12 noon.

And a dinner for those who are living with diabetes will be held during dinner hour on May 29, and a taste tester will be hosted on May 31 for the public.

IlinniaKatigennik Cancellation

There will be no IlinniaKatigennik show on Tuesday, May 21st, 2019 due to the Victoria Day holiday.

The IlinniaKatigennik will be back on the air again on Tuesday, May 28, 2019.

Lela Evans Elected as New MHA for Torngat District

Congratulations to Lela Evans, who was elected as MHA for Torngat Mountains District.

Evans will serve his district for 4 years.

Dr. Jim Tuck remembered for archaeological research in Nunatsiavut

The following statement was made today by Culture, Recreation and Tourism Minister Jim Lyall.

Labrador Inuit were saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Jim Tuck, a pioneer of modern professional archaeological research in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Dr. Tuck, who passed away on May 10, founded the archaeology program at Memorial University, and the department there is now considered to be one of the best in the country.

Dr. Tuck received numerous honors over the years for his efforts, including being elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 1982 for his contributions to archaeological research. He was also the recipient of the Manning Award from the Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Historical Society’s Heritage Award for significant contributions to “the preservation and/or dissemination of the written record of the history of Newfoundland and Labrador.” He was a recipient of the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as the Smith-Wintemberg Award from the Canadian Archaeological Association – the highest award given by the national body.

Dr. Tuck’s work was used by the Labrador Inuit Association leading up to the signing of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement and the formation of the Nunatsiavut Government in 2005. His work continues to be important resource material for the Nunatsiavut Government as manages the region’s rich historic resources.

As Minister of Culture, Recreation of Tourism, I would like to extend sincere condolences to Dr. Tuck’s family and friends. He will be warmly remembered in northern Labrador.

Funding approved for upgrades to the E.J Broomfield Arena

The E.J. Broomfield arena in Happy Valley Goose Bay is getting accessibility upgrades done.

The HVGB Council approved funds for a new ramp and seven accessible seats at the arena during their council meeting that was held on April 30.

The total cost of the upgrades to the arena will be $900,000 and is coming from the New Building Canada Fund which is a federal/provincial/municipal partnership.

Phase one of the renovations to the arena, which comes with a price tag of $60,000, started last week and will be the ramp and the new seats.

Hopedale DHSD Programs

The Department of Health and Social Development in Hopedale is quite busy with their programs.

Frances Boas is the Mental Health and Addictions Worker for DHSD.

She says they has Adult Support groups on Mondays from 6-8 and Girls Group every Tuesdays also from 6-8pm.

They also have a Youth Sleep Over’s once a month for 15 + up and will be holding another one sometime next week.

Boas says she is starting her first Mom’s and Baby’s Social today from 1-4pm, May 16 and will be now be held every second Thursday’s.

She also holds counselling when needed.

Boas adds that she is planning a “Celebrating Life!” event for the month of June that will be going on for 1 week but don’t have the dates set yet.

Election Day for MHA

Its elections day today, the Provincial General elections opened this morning at 7:30am for the MHA for the Torngat Mountains District.

You can now cast your votes in today.

There are 2 candidates running for the position for MHA.

First candidate running is Randy Edmunds who is running for liberal and Leila Evans from Makkovik who is running for PC.

Polling stations will be located at the following communities and location:

In Nain votes can be done at the Nain Inuit Community Government office in the board room.

In Natuashish voters can vote at the Band Council office, board room; In Hopedale you can cast your votes at the HICG board room, and in Postville at the Recreation Hall, In Makkovik at the Community Hall and in Rigolet at the Strathcona Building.

The poll will close at 7:30pm.

OK Radio will be on the air tonight at 7:30pm when the polls close.

Hopedale Ordinary Member

Greg flowers of Hopedale will be sworn in as the ordinary member of Hopedale next month.

The Nunatsiavut Assembly meets at least four times a year in Hopedale.

Flowers says that he will be starting his new position as Ordinary Member of Hopedale when he gets sworn in this June.
