Rigolet Bike Rodeo

Department of Health and Social Development in Rigolet is holding a bike rodeo this month.

We spoke with Lisa Palliser Bennett who is the Community Health Worker with DHSD in Rigolet.

She says they will be holding a bike rodeo on Tuesday, May 21st, at the New Rink.

It will be for children ages 5-12 years old.

They are partnering up with the RCMP.

They will have a Presentation for Safety tips, what to expect, and will also provide healthy snacks.

Reflectors and Safety gear will also be given away to children that attend.

2019 MHA Elections (Audio)

The 2019 Provincial General Election will take place tomorrow, Thursday, May 16, 2019.

This year marks the 48th General Assembly.

Both Lela Evans and Randy Edmunds from Makkovik are running for MHA.

We spoke with them to find out what their main issues are and what they want to bring to their constituencies.

The following key dates apply to this Election Day will be Thursday, May 16.

Polls will be open from 7:30am until 7:30pm.

Gas Prices expected to drop

The Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices is expecting to see a drop at the pumps tomorrow, May 16th, 2019.

The forecast is for a 2.1 cent decrease in gas, and about one cent for diesel.

Heating and stove oils are expected to drop by about one cent.

Polling Stations for the MHA Torngat Mountains District

Its Election Day tomorrow, Thursday, May 16 for MHA for the Provincial General Election for the Torngat Mountains District.

There are 2 candidates running for MHA, first candidate running is Randy Edmunds who is running for liberal and Leila Evans from Makkovik who is running for PC.

Polling stations will be located at the following communities and location:

In Nain votes can be done at the Nain Inuit Community Government office in the board room.

In Natuashish voters can vote at the Band Council office, board room; In Hopedale at the HICG board room, and in Postville at the Recreation Hall, In Makkovik at the Community Hall and in Rigolet at the Strathcona Building.

The poll will open tomorrow morning at 7:30am and close at 7:30pm.

Registration for Kindergarten/Kinder start

Registration just started for children who will be starting kinder start this fall.

And a new online registration process in put in place for children who will be attending to the Kindergarten in September of 2020 and for children who will be starting kinder start this September.

Registration began Monday May 13 and Tuesday Mary 14 in the Labrador regions.

We spoke with Mrs. Angnatok who is the Assistant Principal at K-3 school.

She says children must be five years of age on or before December 31, 2020 in order to register.

Children registered in kinder start will automatically be registered to attend Kindergarten in September 2020.

To complete the online registration you must need the following in order to complete the online application:
1. MCP number including expiration date;
2. An email address in order to receive confirmation of receipt of your application;
3. Contact phone number and an emergency contact phone number; and,
4. An Internet-ready device

To complete the registration process, proof of address and confirmation of MCP number must be provided in person at the designated school on or before May 31, 2019.

Angnatok says parents can also come down to the JHMS primary school to register their children for kinder start or kindergarten, please bring your Childs MCP to complete the forms.

Women In Resource Development hold Information Sessions

The Women in Resource Development Corporation (WRDC) helps women throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to prepare for and achieve meaningful careers in trades and technology.

Judy Voisey is the Career Resource Development with WRDC.

She says herself and her colleague Emma Martin arrived to Nain yesterday.

They held an information session and a feast for women last evening at the JS center at 6pm.

They are in town to conduct surveys to women, and to hold the information sessions to inform women about their programs they offer.

WRDC offers career exploration programs, counselling and employment recruit, and work place training and many more.

OK conduct polls for upcoming MHA elections

It’s Election Day, Thursday, May 16 for the MHA for the Torngat Mountains District.

Ok radio wanted to find out who will be going to the polls to cast their vote in their respective communities.

So we called at least six people at random from the phonebook in each community to find out if they are going to vote.

Here are the results we found:

In Nain, 87.5% said they will vote, 2.5% said they will not vote, and 10% said they were unsure.

75% of the people who said they were going to vote said that they were going to vote PC, 10% said they were voting Liberal and the other 15% said they were undecided.

Out of the People we contacted in Natuashish, 90% said they were they were voting and 10% said they were not going to vote.

50% of the people who said they were going to vote said that they were going to vote for Liberal and the other 50% said they were undecided.

And in Hopedale: 75% will go out to vote, 12.5% say they will not go to the polls, and 12.5% were unsure.

50% of the voters that said they were going to vote said they were going to vote Liberal, 25% said they were voting PC and the other 25% were undecided.

We also contacted residents in Postville, where 100% of the people we contacted will head to the polls Thursday.
66.7% of the voters will be voting PC while the other 33.3% said they were undecided.

Out of the people we called in Makkovik, 100% of the people we contacted said they are going to vote.

50% of the people said they were going to vote PC, 25% said Liberal and the other 25% said they were undecided.

All Rigolet residents we contacted will also hit the polls: 100% said they will vote but were all undecided.

These numbers are of the people we could get in contact with and here are the overall percentages:

77.27% percentage said that they were voting and the other 22.73% were undecided or isn’t going to vote.

15.91% said they were voting Liberal.

31.82% said they were voting PC.

The other 52.27% said they were undecided and or didn’t want to say.

Just a little note: that we contacted everyone during the day so we were guessing not much were answering their phones because they were gone off or working.

2020 Registration for Cains Quest

The registration began yesterday to register your team for the 2020 Cain’s Quest Snowmobile Endurance Race.

Cain’s Quest is one of the most extreme winter endurance races on the planet.

Contestants come from all over the world to brave the elements, battle each other, and compete for their moment of glory.

According to their website: there are 41 teams registered for the race.

12 teams registered are from out of the province.

For the first time, there are two all female teams.

There are 9 spots left for teams that want to register.

Students on Ice Arctic 2019 Expedition

The Arctic 2019 expedition will bring together more than 100 high school and university students from across the Arctic and around the world.

This expedition will take place from July 23 to August 7, 2019.

Students will have the opportunity to be inspired with scientists, elders, artists, musicians, dignitaries, historians, thought leaders and innovators.

Deep in nature and engaged in cross disciplinary activity, students will be inspired, motivated, educated and challenged.

In the meantime, explore the site to learn about the Itinerary for the 2019 Arctic Expedition and to find Participant Resources.

There are full scholarships available for a majority of participants.

The deadline to submit the Arctic 2019 application form has already passed for all scholarship applicants.

Scholarship applicants will be notified of the status of their application in May 2019.

Applications are still being accepted for students who plan to fundraise or self-fund their expedition fee.

Nain RCMP provides Ice Safety Tips

The Nain RCMP and the Nain Ground Search and Rescue would like to inform the public to be prepared while traveling on the ice.

We spoke with Sergeant Ed Nugget with the Nain RCMP and Sid Pain who is the Coordinator for the GS&R.

Sgt. Nugget says if you do plan to go off on the land, please make sure you let someone know when and where you are traveling and when you will come back.
