No Results of AngajukKak Results, Due NO Internet, Long distance

Due to no long distance and no internet for two days in Nain, Ok radio has not been able to get the results on the Election’s for AngajukKat that took place in the north coast communities yesterday.

But, soon as the long distance and internet is back we will announce how the elections went.

Election Day for AngajukKat was yesterday, Tuesday, September 11, 2018.

The nominated candidates were, in Hopedale – Marjorie Flowers, Jim Tuttauk and Charlotte Lucy- Piercy.

In Makkovik – Herbert Jacque and Barry Andersen.

Postville – Diane Gear, Glen Sheppard and Angela Michlin.

Rigolet – Darryl Shiwak, Charlotte Wolfrey, Richard Rich and Oz Allen.

In Nain, Julius (Joe) Dicker accalaimed.

ERFC and Moose Licences

The English River Fish Count in Postville is having a good season this year.

Todd Broomfield is the Deputy Minister for Land and Resources for Nunatsiavut Government.

He says as of August 26th, 2018, they have counted a total of 832 Salmon.

And as of September 3rd, 2018, they counted 2,264 char and 24 brook trout.

Broomfield will also give you information on the Moose Licences.

He says there are 39 Moose licences that were issued by the Provincial Government for the Labrador Inuit Settlement area and the Nunatsiavut Government manage all of those 39 licences.

Scallop Survey in Nain

A scallop survey that’s taking place is going well in Nain.

The longliner Grand Duke from Southern Labrador arrived town last Thursday.

The crew picked up one local scallop licence holder.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Nain Fishplant Supervisor.

She says there are 7 local scallop shuckers working and cleaners on the go.

She says a total of 8,500 pounds of green scallops has been landed up to yesterday.

Kohlmeister says they do not have the price of scallops as of yet for people who want to buy green scallops or the meats.

Ok radio will have further information once the fishplant or Torngat Fisheiries gets the prices straightened out.

Nain Water Leaks Update

There was a lot of water leaks occurring in Nain all through last week mainly on Middle Path Road that included having the water shut off and across the brook.

Joe Dicker is the Nain Inuit Government Office AngajukKak.

He says those leaks have now been repaired, but there also some places in town where there are other leaks on Sand Banks Road.

The council crews have been busy daily throughout the whole ordeal since the leaks started, the residents have been very patient through this, and have been very happy for the work they have done or had to do.

Dicker says there are four other leaks on Sand Banks road, and the crew is working on a leak and checking whats required to be done from Stacy Dickers to Shanon Lidds place.

He says there will be more information if and when the water will be shut off later, but there is also a leak by David Dickers , Nancy Winters place and where Judy Rowell used to live and down by Rod Pilgrims.

Dicker says the council crew is short staffed, but they are working on the repairs, and it may also take about all this week to finish the water leak problems.

In the meantime, the garbage collection have been on hold until this morning, and garbage collectors have to catch up where its been three days behind.

Marine Transport Meeting on New Vessel (Audio)

A public meeting was held for the residents in Nain about a new vessel for the north coast communities.

There was quite a big turnout from local business owners around town.

There many issues brought forward and questions asked to officials from out of town.

MHA Randy Edmunds officially opened the meeting, MP Yvonne Jones, Peter Woodward of Woodwards, and other officials attended, with Nunatsiavut Government and the Nain AngajukKak.

The main issue or opened ears was no more service from Lewisporte after the new vessel start operating.

Universal Helicopters makes investment in US Company

Universal Helicopters of Goose Bay, Labrador, today announced that it has closed an agreement to invest in South Coast Helicopters, headquartered in Fullerton, California.

Universal will own a 49% share of South Coast, the maximum investment allowed to a foreign aviation operator under U. S. law. Universal’s investment in South Coast is its first investment in the United States.

“The VFR (Visual Flight Rules) segment is a large market internationally in the helicopter services industry,” says Universal Helicopters President and CEO Shane Cyr. “Half of the world market is in the United States. This investment opens up that potential to Universal.”

South Coast Helicopters provides services to the motion picture and commercial production industries. It also services clients such as the US Forestry Service and NASA.

Universal operates in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian Arctic, northwestern British Columbia, and the Yukon, and serves a variety of clients in government and in the resources industry.

Nain and Makkovik Fish Plant Update

The work at the Nain fish plant has slowed down for the summer.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Office Supervisor.

She says the char fishery has finished up and the fishermen had their last landing on September 1st.
Kohlmeister says 48,206lbs of char has been landed up to September 1st.

She says there are 14 employees working at the plant.

The Makkovik fish plant is still busy with processing Turbot.

Junior Andersen is the Production Manager.

He says 341,000lbs of Turbot has been landed to date.

Andersen says there are 4 Turbot boat fishing and 30 employees working at the plant.

Fuel Prices Climb Across the Board

There’s a big jump in the maximum price that can be charged for fuel this morning.

Gasoline and diesel are up by just over two cents a litre while furnace and stove oil are up by just under two cents.

Propane for home heating costs about two cents more per litre.
