The first story is in the “books” and now we are looking ahead to Volume 2.

For Volume 2 of the #INUKBOOK project we are looking for a simple idea that will be published as a beginner Inuktitut book. Ideas could include:

  • Alphabet
  • Simple words or phrases
  • Very short sentences

Nain Fish Plant Update

The Nain Fish Plant is working on the last bit of scallops.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Plant Supervisor.

She says a total of 12,656 lbs. of green scallops was landed in week from a survey that was done.

Kohlmeister says there are shucked scallop meats for sale for $16.00 a pound.

There are 8 employees working and cleaning up the plant.

She added there are smoked char, fresh char, fresh char fillets and crab legs for sale at the plant till Friday, September 21st.

Peoples Questions on New Vessel

A public meeting was held in Nain about a new vessel that will be serving the communities on the north coast.

There was a big turnout from local business owners around town.

There were many issues brought forward and questions asked to the officials from out of town.

The officials included: MHA, MP, Woodwards, Nunatsiavut Government and NICG.

The topic on no more service from Lewisporte was an ear opener after the new vessel start operating.

Stay tuned to today’s AtjiKangitut show to hear an audio which is part two of the questions people asked about the new vessel and answers from the officials last Friday.

Nain and Makkovik Fish Plant Updates

The Makkovik Fish Plant is still busy processing Turbot.

Junior Andersen is the Production Manager.

He says 411,000 lbs. of Turbot has been landed to date.

Andersen says there are 2 boats fishing and 30 employees working at the plant.

OK Radio will have an update on Nain Fish Plant when it becomes available.

NG Seeking Okak Commemoration Committee Members from Rigolet and Postville

The Nunatsiavut Government’s Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, are in the process of developing an “Okak 1918 Commemoration Committee” in partnership with the Tradition and Transition Partnership and are looking for Beneficiaries that would be interested in being a part of the Voluntary Committee.

They are asking interested Beneficiaries from Rigolet and Postville to submit the following:

  1. Detail on your connection to Okak;
  2. Why you would like to be a member; and
  3. Your full name, and best way to contact you if you are a successful candidate.

This advertisement was originally advertised to all Nunatsiavut Communities and Upper Lake Melville, with a number or people applying from each community.

They did not receive any applicants from Rigolet and Postville, therefore they are re-advertising for only these two communities at this time.

Gas prices

The price of gasoline dropped over 4 (4.3) cents per litre yesterday, but there is no change in diesel.

Furnace and stove oil remain the same, but the residential propane goes up by three cents per litre.

Universal Helicopters Announces purchase of Lakelse Air

Universal Helicopters today announced the purchase of Lakelse Air of terrace, British Columbia, and in the process, becomes Canada’s only coast-to-coast Indigenous owned helicopter services company.

The purchase includes the Lakelse Air fleet of 12 aircraft as well as its other assets. The purchase price was not disclosed.

Lakelse will continue to operate as a separate company under its existing management and staff.

A senior leadership team headed by universal president and CEO Shane Cyr, and comprised of Lakelse and Universal senior managers, will provide strategic direction of Lakelse.

This Acquisition allows universal to grow its business in a part of the country with great potential.

Lakelse Air has significant experience and expertise in current and emerging areas of activity in north western British Columbia,

Including aerial construction and power line activity, mining and exploration, oil and gas, and in forestry and forest fire suppression.

Fish Plant Update

OK Radio called the Fish Plant in Nain for an update on how the scallop survey was going, and it seems to be going well.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Nain Fish Plant Supervisor.

She says a total of 2,250 lbs of green scallops was landed yesterday and that few are people shucking.

They have about 15 employees and doing some cleaning up.
