Election Day for Community Chairs is coming up on Tuesday, September 11th, for everyone’s information here is the list of who is running:

Nomination of Candidates for Council 2018 Election

Nominations of seven (7) candidates for the Inuit Community Council of the Community Government Elections for the Municipality of Nain will be received between the hours of nine (9) a.m. to four (4) p.m. starting on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 to Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at the Nain Inuit Community Government Office.

Nominations shall be in writing and shall state the name and residence of the candidate and shall be signed by the Proposer and Seconder, both of whom shall be present together with the candidate, who shall also sign signifying his or her acceptance of the nomination.

During the aforesaid dates with the exception of the days Saturday and Sunday.

The qualifications of a candidate for Election for the Inuit Community Council are as follows:

  • Eligible to be enrolled on the A Voters roll and/ or the B Voters roll in an Election in the community in which he or she is nominated to serve as a councillor.
  • Canadian Citizen of the full age of nineteen (19) years.
  • Ordinarily resident in the community or area for at least six (6) months prior to the date set for nomination.
    One (1) seat on Inuit Community Council reserved for New Residence. (B Voters list)

The Election, if required, will take place on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 between the hours of eight (8) a.m. and eight (8) p.m. at Polling Booths to be located at the Nain Inuit Community Government Office.

IlinniaKatigennik Postponed Until Next Month

The IlinniaKatigennik program for this month is postponed until Tuesday, October 9, 2018.

This is due to staff shortage this month.

Academy Canada

The Academy Canada classes for students started in Nain this morning.

Gerry Hapgood is the Instructor.

He says there are six students enrolled as of now.

Hapgood adds there are nine seats available, so if anyone is interested, you can call 922-1786.

School Supplies in HVGB

The Labrador Friendship in Happy Valley Goose Bay had school supplies to give away since Friday.

Jennifer Elson-Hefler is the Executive Director for the centre.

She says there were about 202 nap sacks given out so far.

Elson-Hefler adds if anyone need school supplies for their children, they can call the Labrador Friendship Centre at 896-8014.

Scallop Survey

A survey is taking place for scallop in the Rigolet area.

Keith Watts is the General Manager of Torngat Fish Producers Cooperative.

He says the longliner did one survey so far and is planned to do two more days there in Rigolet.

Watts says after the two days the boat will be heading to Nain and do more scallop survey in the Nain area.

He added the boat will be picking up one local scallop licence holder to join in with the crew.

Ok radio hopes to get more information on how the survey went in Rigolet sometime later of this week.

Torngat Housing Construction Update

The construction of new homes and repairs are well underway on the north coast communities.

William Lucy is the Coordinator.

He says the exterior of one new home is covered in Hopedale.
Home repairs are going well in Postville.
One new home is started and flooring done in Makkovik.
The exterior of one new home is completed in Rigolet and wiring is getting installed, and work is being done on two land lots.
One new home in Nain is covered exterior done, with major repairs being done on two homes.

Lucy says most of all the materials and supplies have been arriving for construction for all the communities.

They’re waiting on more supplies and materials they ordered for the repair program .

Seeking Committee Members from Rigolet and Postville for Okak 1918 Commemoration Committee

The Nunatsiavut Government’s, Department of Culture Recreation and Tourism, are in the process of developing an “Okak 1918 Commemoration Committee” in partnership with the Tradition and Transition Partnership and are looking for Beneficiaries that would be interested in being a part of the Voluntary Committee.

We are asking interested Beneficiaries from Rigolet and Postville to submit the following:

Detail on your connection to Okak; Why you would like to be a member; and
Your full name, and best way to contact you if you are a successful candidate.

Another Jump at the Pumps Predicted

It’s looking like a stop at the pump will cost a bit more this week, according to the Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices.

This week’s forecast shows gas will rise by about a cent and a half per litre (1.6), while diesel could jump by just over two cents (2.2).

Heating and stove oils are also showing an increase of just under two cents per litre (1.7).
