LATP Office in Makkovik

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnerships Labrador office is located in Makkovik.

We spoke with the Nunatsiavut Career Counsellor, Ocean Lane.

She says she is proud to announce that they now have a toll free number for her office; which is 1-844-905-0524.

Lane is still assisting individuals who need help with doing up your very first resume, or updating your resume, assisting with cover letters, safety training and much more.

Her office is open from Monday to Fridays from 8:30 am to 4 pm.

She adds she can help anyone from the five coastal communities in Labrador.

She helps individuals by phone; she helps with the LATP application forms, Safety Training, updating your resume, and prepares you in a mock interview, she can assist you in applying for different trades programs.

Bear Guard Training (Audio)

There will be Bear Guard Training starting in Makkovik on November 22nd, 2019.

Derek Pottle will be the instructor for this training.

He says they will be learning how to be safe around bears and to learn how to identify their behaviour.

Pottle says that this would be a good opportunity for individuals to come to learn to be certified bear guards.

So, if you would like to put your name in for this training, you can contact your liaison officers, or the Mayor Priscilla from Goose Bay at the Torngat Wildlife Plant and Board.

TRHA Update

The Torngat Regional Housing Association held their annual board meeting in Happy Valley-Goose Bay this month.

Viona Hynes is the Accountant with TRHA.

She says they hold their annual board meetings every two years with TRHA to hold their re-elections for the new Chair person and Vice chair.

And this year the board meeting was held on Wednesday November 6th, 2019.

Hynes says Judy Dicker from Hopedale was elected for Chair person this year and Margie Fox from Nain is the new Vice Chair person.

Congratulations to both Dicker and Fox.

In the last update, we had we spoke with Hynes in May to find out who are the new housing committee members for Nain.

The committee members are Jerry Hapgood, Margie Fox, Rod Pilgrim, Dwayne Metcalfe and Roxanne Andersen.

Remembrance Day Celebration

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, on November 11 each year, Canadians are asked to pause in memory of the thousands of men and women who sacrificed their lives in the military service.

This day is called Remembrance Day and will be celebrated this Monday November 11th, 2019.

The North Coast schools of Labrador all held their ceremonies yesterday.

The OK Radio attended the Jens Haven Memorial School in Nain yesterday morning to record the ceremony.

In observance of Remembrance Day, the OKâlaKatiget will be closed this Monday, and we will hold our regular programming this Sunday, November 10th, 2019.

Language Summit (Audio)

The Language Summit in Nain wrapped up on Wednesday evening, November 6th, 2019.

Shirley Jararuse is the Language Program Coordinator for the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says there were about 55 people who were invited to the Language Summit.

Jararuse says there were many different presenters from the Nunatsiavut communities.

John Nui Re-Elected Chief

The Mushua Innu First nation held their re-election for Chief in Natuashish.

John Nui has been re-elected as the Mushua Innu First Nation Chief.

Nui earned 331 votes and Simeon Tshakapesh earned 152 yesterday, who have also been previously chief before.

Chief Nui will sit for another 3 years, with a council consisting of Matthias Rich, Simon Pokue, Angela Pasteen and Mary Lucy Dicker.

Nui’s priority issue lists are the community housing problem including overcrowding, mould, and renovations.

Congratulations to the newly elected members for Natuashish.

Coastal CEEP

The OKâlaKatiget contacted the Inuit Community Governments along the coast to see what they have for their Community on the Enhancement Employment Programs.

At the Makkovik Inuit Community Government, their expected start date is on Monday, November 18th, 2019 and letters must be submitted to the town office by Tuesday, November 12th, 2019 at 3 pm.

Their activities planned for this year includes Community Clean up, Craft making, Construction of Cemetery Crosses and benches, Snow shoveling, and Assisting Recreation Staff during events and programming.

In Postville, their start date for this program is on December 3rd, 2019 and will be doing traditional crafts such as sewing and woodwork.

They are asking that you must have your declaration form and copy of latest ROE into the town and approved by the Dept. of Municipal Affairs a week before you can start work.

In the Rigolet ICG, the expected start date will be on Monday, December 2nd, 2019 and the activities planned for this program will include crafts making.

They are no longer accepting applications as the deadline was on Wednesday, November 6th, 2019.

Air Inuit Flights

It’s that time of the year when many people are traveling to be with family and friends for the Christmas holidays.

Air Inuit recently released their schedule for the 2019-2020 Special Holiday flights to Nain.

The first flight is scheduled to be on Thursday, December 19th, 2019 a flight from George River, Quebec that will depart at 11 am and will arrive in Nain at 12:30 pm.

On the same day, it departs from Nain at 1 pm and arrives back to George River at 2:30 pm.

Air Inuit returns back to Nain on Friday, December 27th, 2019 and arrives to Nain at 12:30 pm, and returns back at George River at 2:30 pm.

And the last remaining flight to Nain for the Christmas holidays will be on Thursday, January 2nd, 2020.

It departs George River at 11 am then arrives to Nain at 12:30 pm.

Lastly, it will depart from Nain at 1 pm, and arrives back to George River at 2:30 pm.

Thoughts On This Week’s Language Summit (Audio)

The Department of Language, Culture & Tourism finished the Language Summit in Nain yesterday.

The purpose of this summit is to develop a Language Strategy for the Nunatsiavut
Government.

OKâlaKatiget Radio and Television was invited to record this event.

Students On Ice 2020 Arctic Expedition

The Students on Ice Expedition are taking applications from youth who are interested in taking part in the 2020 Arctic Expedition.

We spoke with Shirley Manh who is one of the Expedition Managers.

She says next year is a special year for the Expeditions because in 2020 it will be their 20th year celebrating the Students on ice expedition.

Youth from Nunatsiavut and all around the world will take place.

This is for youth between the ages 14-22 years, and you do not need to be a student to apply.

She says there are three Students on Ice 2020 expedition scholarships for youth for Nunatsiavut youth this year.

The deadline is fast approaching.
