Fuel Prices

Some fuel prices have dropped today, except for the price of gasoline.

Gasoline increased by less than half a cent 0.3 per litre.

Diesel dropped by just over a cent 1.3 per litre.

Heating oil is seeing the biggest decrease by over 1.5 per litre,( 1.64 per litre).

Stove oil decreased by a cent per litre.

Propane remain unchanged.

New Youth Outreach Worker for Nain

The Department of Health and Social Development in Nain recently filled the position of the Youth Outreach worker for Nain.

We spoke with Kim Oliver the new Youth Outreach Worker for Nain.

She says her office is located at the Youth Center.

Oliver says this Meet and Greet began at 1 pm and ends at 4 pm today.

This Meet and Greet is open to youth between the ages of 13-30 years.

She says come by for snacks, tea or coffee and there will be great door prizes to be won.

This meet and greet is a good chance to talk to the youth and how to get ideas for programming; also the youth center will be opened in the day.

She would like to introduce herself.

She hopes to have more land base programs planned in the near future.

Job Advertisements for Café Illusuak – Nain

The Nunatsiavut Group of Company Solutions Inc have a few job positions available for residents in Nain.

Russell Banzet is the Human Resources Manager for NGC in Goose Bay.

He says they have three full time positions for the Café Illusuak in Nain:

1. Customer Service Attendant
2. Café Cook
3. Manager Café/Gift Shop

Banzet says ideally they are looking for qualified beneficiaries; however, everyone is welcome to apply.

Thoughts On This Week’s Language Summit (Audio)

The Department of Language, Culture & Tourism is holding a Language Summit in Nain this week.

The purpose of this summit is to develop a Language Strategy for the Nunatsiavut
Government.

Remembrance Day Assemblies

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Canadians are asked to pause in memory of the thousands of men and women who sacrificed their lives in military service.

The North Coast schools of Labrador are holding their ceremonies on Thursday, November 7th.

The Jens Haven Memorial School in Nain will be starting their assembly at the 4-12 gym at 10:50 am.

Kids have been decorating, and there will be a poem and poster contest.

In Hopedale, they start at 10:50 am at the Amos Comenius Memorial School gymnasium with a regular assembly with some songs and speeches.

The RCMP and Canadian Rangers will also be there.

Carmine Sheppard is the Principal for B.L. Morrison School in Postville.

She says the ceremony will start at 10:50 am at the school gym.

They will bring poppies on the cross, do poems and there will be a short movie.

The Canadian Rangers and the Junior Rangers will be there.

OK Radio couldn’t get a hold to the principals in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Makkovik.

Labrador Marine Press Release

An intensifying storm in the Labrador Sea is moving in quicker than initially forecasted, forcing Labrador Marine to abort its northward trip at Makkovik.

Near-hurricane force winds of 40 to 55 knots are forecast from Thursday until Saturday or Sunday.

It was decided that given the extreme conditions forecast for a period of several days, the Kamutik W would return southward after unloading at Makkovik on Tuesday evening.

The vessel will stop at Rigolet at 11 Wednesday morning and then continue to Goose Bay.

The Kamutik W will hold at Goose Bay until weather conditions improve. Labrador Marine will monitor weather conditions over the next several days and provide updates on our website at lmsi.woodwardgroup.ca.

Fuel Price Predictions

Some relief for fuel prices appears to be coming this week.

This is according to George Murphy of the Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices.

Predictions are a drop in diesel, as well as heating and stove oil by about one and a half cents per litre.

The price of gasoline will not change this week according to Murphy.

Last week, gasoline increased by 1.5 cents per litre.

Makkovik Minor Hockey

The Makkovik Minor Hockey started their registrations yesterday.

Chantelle Evans is the Recreation Director for the leading Minor Hockey.

Evans says you can pick up applications from her at work, or at her home during the evenings, get an email from her or send her a message.

The registration has a cost of $61 and directly goes to HockeyNL, it covers the cost of insurance in case injury. And there will be a $10 late fee.

You can pay your fees by cash or emt to makkovikminorhockey@gmail.com

If this is your child’s first time applying, there is a onetime online course you will need to complete.

You will get a copy of the certificate when it will be completed at https://hnlparent.respectgroupinc.com/

You also are going to need a copy of the birth certificate.

The deadline for registration is November 22, 2019.
