New Dairy Queen Grill and Chill Store

Dairy Queen Grill & Chill will be opening up in Happy Valley Goose Bay next year.

Belinda Andersen is the CEO and President.

She says this new store will be having its grand opening in March 2020.

Andersen says this new store will have three managers operating this new Dairy Queen Grill and Chill.

And they will be looking for 60-70 employees.

She says there will be many positions available for all skill set, they accept all educational levels and those who are had similar experiences which will be the main asset.

Andersen says the store will be a 12 hours a day, 364 days a year, but on Christmas day the store will be closed.

They will have many different menus available; such as ice cream in multiple varieties, ice cream cakes, burgers and other associated products.

North Coast Ball Hockey Tournament

The Makkovik Recreation Department announced that there will be a North Coast Ball Hockey Tournament coming up in the New Year.

Paul Andersen is the Recreation Director.

He says that this tournament will be a non-cash prize tournament.

The tournament will be for men 14+ and women 12+, with teams of 3 on 3 and a goalie for each team.

It will begin January 24th, 2020 until January 25th, 2020 taking place at the J.C. Erhardt Memorial School at 3 pm onwards.

The registration will be $100 per team.

The deadline for the tournament will be January 17, 2020.

Coastal Annual Guy Fawkes Night

The Guy Fawkes Night is an annual event held on November 5th.

We contacted each Inuit Community Government to find out what they are doing tonight in celebration of Guy Fawkes Night.

In Makkovik; usually everyone holds their own bonfires, either at the shore line or at the sandpit.

They also invite family and friends to gather around the fire and enjoy some wieners and marshmallows.

In the community of Postville; we spoke with Town Manager Shirley Goudie.

She says that the Fire Brigade will hold a community bonfire tonight starting at 6:30 pm at the sandpit, everyone is welcome.

They will be having wieners and marshmallows this year.

In Happy Valley Goose Bay; the annual Guy Fawkes bonfire will be held at the EJ Broomfield arena with free skating starting from 6:00 to 6:50 pm.

Hot chocolate and marshmallows and hot dogs and apples will be provided.

In Hopedale this year the bonfire starts at 6 pm at the Nanuk Center, with wieners and hot chocolate and marshmallows provided.

And in Rigolet the Inuit Community Government will be providing marshmallows, wieners, apple and orange juice and water, the bonfire begins at 6:30 pm tonight.

Illusuak Grand Opening in Nain (Audio)

The Illusuak Community Centre in Nain is finally completed.

Jim Lyall is the Minister for Cultural, Recreation and Tourism and Ordinary Member for Nain.

He says that the grand opening will be held on November 21st, 2019 at 11 am.

Lyall added that there will be Nunatsiavut Officials, AngajukKâts, Inuit Tapariit Kanadimi and Provincial government that will be attending the grand opening.

Financial Literacy Training (Audio)

There will be Financial Literacy Training here in Nain from 6-8 pm this evening.

Mary Binky Andersen is the Business Development Officer with the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says the Nunatsiavut Economic Development partnered with Eagle River Credit Union Representative, Mary-Jane Hudson.

This training will be held upstairs at the Atsanik Inn and anyone is welcome to join.

Andersen adds that this training will help you understand more about banking and budgeting.

Labrador Marine Inc Update

Labrador Marine Inc. stated yesterday that it is confident all freight destined for North coast communities will be delivered by the end of the shipping season.

The company reported that with the guaranteed freight acceptance cut-off approaching November 8th, freight arrivals at the terminal in Goose Bay have slowed significantly.

Discussions with the major shippers of groceries and other goods have revealed that only a few container loads remain to be dropped off at the terminal.

LMI stated that after the current departure for north coast ports, there will be approximately three full vessel loads of freight at the Goose Bay terminal.

So far in 2019, LMI has handled about 10,712 tons of north coast freight compared to the 8000 tons handled by the previous service provider at this time last year, a 34 percent increase.

Labrador Marine Inc will provide further updates as the season progresses.

Nain & Hopedale Residents Ran Out of Gas

The residents of Nain and Hopedale were very concerned this past Friday; both communities ran out of gas at their local gas stations.

Dennis White is the General Manager for Woodward’s Oil Ltd in Happy Valley Goose Bay.

White says residents in Nain ran out of gas on Friday morning at 10 am on November 1st while residents in Hopedale also ran out of gas that Friday evening at 5 pm.

The oil tanker arrived to Nain on Saturday November 2nd, 2019.

And the Woodward’s Oil Ltd. Gas station in Nain opened up for residents on Sunday morning.

White says the tanker will be leaving from Nain tonight and will arrive to Hopedale at 7 am tomorrow morning on November 5th, 2019.

After Hopedale, the tanker will arrive to Natuashish for the gas and diesel, then head to Postville and Rigolet.

He adds that this is the last trip to the North coast communities.

White says last Monday; they had a truck filled up with 22 thousand litres of gas for the ferry last Monday for the north coast.

RisingYouth North

The RisingYouth North has community service grants available.

It goes for ages 15-30 years of age who have the desire to make their community a better place.

You can look at the requirements for the program that is available on their website.

The funding program is available to Canadian citizens, permanent residents or people who have been granted refugee status in Canada.

They have three levels of grants available that are $250, $750 and $1000.

You can take land trips with youth, host events for elders, suicide prevention events and more because the possibilities are endless.

Young Girls Empowerment Program

The Young Girls Empowerment & Personal Development Program will be held in Nain starting today, November 4th, 2019.

Heather Angnatok is the Regional Youth Administrator for DHSD.

She says that this program will be going ahead until November 8th, 2019 at the Pulâpvik Room.

This program is aimed for young girls from along the coast ages 13-18.

She says thanks to the funding agency, Tides Canada provided the funding to deliver this program.

They will be having young girls from along the North Coast of Labrador as well as a Member within the Canadian Constituency.

She says the main objective for this program is to improve the overall wellness and health specifically for young girls.

Angnatok also says that the goal is to encourage young girls to continue their education, to promote healthy life styles, and to empower young girls with confidence.

She adds that intent for the Young Girls Empowerment Program is to educate and promote healthy life styles through informal discussions.

Angnatok says they will also be joining in the Financial Literacy Training that will be going ahead this evening at the Atsanik Inn.

English River fish count done for another summer (Audio)

The English River fish count in Postville is finished up for the year.

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable of Recourses for Nunatsiavut government.

He says they took off the counting fence on October 12th, 2019.

Broomfield adds that the numbers were low this year.
