Reitman’s Opening in Goose Bay

The new Reitman’s will be opening in Happy-Valley, Goose Bay on December 15th, 2019 at 9 am.

We spoke with Kayla Burgess who is the Manager for the Reitman’s store.

She says the mini mall is a Canadian Company with Head quarters from Montreal and will be located next to the Woodward’s gas station at 371A Hamilton River Road.

There will be ribbon cutting and everyone’s welcome.

Burgess says that it is a women’s clothing store that will also be selling accessories such as earrings, necklaces, scarves, purses.

The opening hours are from:
Monday to Wednesday’s from 9:30 am-5:30 pm
Thursday‘s and Friday’s 9:30 am-9 pm
Saturday’s from 9:30 am-5:30 pm
Sunday’s closed

Nain Huskies Regionals

The Jens Haven Memorial School Huskies are attending the Regional Volleyball Tournament this weekend.

Julie Dicker is the coach for the JHMS Huskies.

She says it will start from November 15th to the 16th, 2019.

They will be competing in Sheshatshiu at the Sheshatshiu Innu School gym.

Students who are going as the JHMS Huskies are:

Mealy Mountain Collegiate from Happy-Valley Goose Bay
Menihek High School from Labrador City, and
S.I.S from Sheshatshiu.

The team winner of this tournament will be going to Provincials in Newfoundland.

Honda and Ski-doo Tickets

There are tickets on sale for a chance to win a Honda or a Ski-doo.

Lisa Ivany is the Recreation Director for the Nain Inuit Community Government.

She says the Honda is valued at $10,000 and the Ski-doo is valued at $15,000.

The Honda is displayed at the JS Centre and the Ski-doo is displayed at the Northern.

Ivany would like to thank and acknowledge the Northern Company for helping with the tickets on the Ski-doo.

She says that they purchased them from Notre Dame in Happy Valley Goose Bay.

With the money raised from the tickets, the Recreation Department will help groups around the community.

She also adds that there will be some recreation events going on such as the Pre-Advent sleepover and a Rummage sale.

Gas Decrease

A drop at the pumps is predicted for fuel this week.

George Murphy of Consumer Group for Fair Gas says gasoline will drop by 1.04 cents per litre.

The prices for heating and stove oil and diesel are not expected to change.

Creative Arts Festival Schedule

The 44th annual Creative Arts Festival starts today and here is the schedule.

All performances start at 7 pm.

Tickets are $5 for admission and $20 for a week pass.

The Hopedale’s Amos Comenius Memorial School and HVGB’s Queen of Peace Middle School performs today.

Tomorrow November 14th, the Lake Melville School from North West River and Northern Lights Academy School from Rigolet will be performing.

The BL Morrison School from Postville and the Mushua Innu School from Natuashish will be performing on Friday, November 15th.

On Saturday, November 16th, the JC Erhardt Memorial School from Makkovik, a cameo called “Storytelling through Social Media” and Labrador’s Got Talent.

On Sunday, November 17th, The Jens Haven Memorial School from Nain and the White Rooster Theatre will be performing “Kate Crackleberry”.

On Monday, November 18th, the Sheshatshui Innu School and the Mealy Mountain Collegiate from Happy Valley Goose Bay performs.

On Tuesday, November 19th, there will be a concert with Norman Foote at 6:30 pm at the Peacock Primary Grade 3 students and Henry Gordon Academy School from Cartwright.

Tickets will be sold separately for the performance with Norman Foote on November 19th at 6:30 pm.

Men’s Group Basic Carving Course (Audio)

There will be a Basic Soap Stone Carving Course on Monday, November 18th, 2019 from 6-9 pm.

Jenni-Rose Campbell is the community Service Worker with the Labrador Friendship Centre.

She says it will be held at the Labrador Friendship Centre and materials will be provided.

The deadline for registrations is tomorrow Thursday, November 14th, 2019.

44th Creative Arts Festival

The Creative Arts Festival will be holding its 44th annual Festival tomorrow.

Matthew Barrett is the manager for the Lawrence O’Brien Centre.

It will be starting tomorrow on November 13th, 2019 until November 19th, 2019.

It will be held at the Lawrence O’Brien Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Tickets will be $5 in admission and $20 for a week pass.

21 Day Challenge Postville DHSD

The Department of Health & Social Development in Postville has a 21 day challenge going on.

It is a challenge to help make a new healthy lifestyle in 21 days.

Candy Chaulk is the Community Health Worker with the DHSD.

She says it started November 15th and will be ending November 26th, 2019.

This challenge is for anyone aged 19+.

There are five people who registered for this program.

Chaulk adds that there will be a supper on the last day for those five people.

Jobe J Annual Volleyball Results

The annual Jobe J Volley Ball Tournament hosted their 24th annual last weekend in Hopedale.

Boas Mitsuk is the Recreation Director.

There were players from Nain, Natuashish, Makkovik, Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Sheshatshiu.

He says the third place winners for the female teams were Team Nemesis.
And for the male division it was Team Villian’s.

Second place for the female division was Sweet Digs.

And for the male division it was Team Overkill.

First place winners for the female was Spike Tyson’s and for the male it was Avengers.

Most Valuable Players were William Tuglavina from Hopedale and Jessica Winters from Makkovik.

Dean David Flower’s sportsmanlike award went to Isaiah Pamak and Abigail Tuglavina from Hopedale.
