Update On Internet/Phone

Lela Evans, MHA for Torngat Mountains District spoke with officials from Bell Aliant to get an update on the outages in Northern Labrador.

This is an update that she has on her Facebook status;

“Update on the phone and internet situation in Postville.

I have been talking with Bell Aliant yesterday and today:

The technician could not land at the site for repairs yesterday due to weather but was able to get to the site today. The problem is being worked on now.”

Heirloom Portraits School/Family Pictures

Heirloom Portraits have been taking school pictures and family pictures in Northern Canada for 30 years.

We spoke with Gene Sandham who is the Marketing Manager.

He says the photographer is will be arriving from Happy Valley-Goose Bay this afternoon.

They will be making their way down to the north coast communities.

They will then go to Natuashish, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville and Rigolet.

Heirloom portraits do the school pictures for students and they also do family pictures.

Sandham says due to poor weather conditions the family pictures will also be held at the Jens Haven Memorial School.

This year students can get their proofs in 31 different backgrounds and for family pictures you can choose from 115 different backgrounds.

Parents and Guardians can also purchase their child/children’s school proofs online on their website at www.heirloomportaits.ca.

AngajukKâk of Nain Update (Audio)

The Nain Inuit Community Government is currently dealing with issues for the Fall and Winter of 2019.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKâk for the Nain Inuit Community Government.

He says the renovations at the Nain Husky Centre have been postponed to next spring as they are still waiting on materials to arrive from Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

He also mentions that the NICG are still taking in names for those who need their hours to qualify for EI.

Gas Increase

The price of gasoline has dropped by 1.04 cent per litre today.

That’s according to George Murphy of Consumer Group for Fair Gas.

The prices for heating and stove oil and diesel have increased by less than a cent per litre.

NG Information Session (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Government is trying to find ways to sustain more energy in Nain.

Neil Hawkes is the Sustainable Energy Coordinator for the Nunatsiavut Government.

He says NG is trying to find ways to sustain more energy in the community.

In previous years they did energy projects on the north coast to help sustain energy in their communities.

Hawkes says the NG is asking community members if they would want to see a wind turbine in Nain to help save energy.

He says he will hold a quick information session this evening at the Nunatsiavut Government board room at 7 pm.

Youth Centre Programs Ideas (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Department of Health and Social Development hired on the new Youth Outreach Worker for Nain.

Kim Oliver is the new Youth Outreach Worker.

We had one of our Radio Producers go down to get Oliver’s feedback about her new position.

And some youth had a few words, and their thoughts.

Oliver held a meet and greet at the Youth Center on Friday November 8th, 2019.

She held a meet and greet to find out what programs the youth would like to see happen.

Some examples included the “Big Brother Big Sister”, hold jam sessions where youth can come by and play their instruments, homework hour; Day trips out on the land and more programs.

JHMS School Seeking Positions

The Jens Haven Memorial School in Nain are still looking to fill in three positions at the school.

Jacob Larkin is the Principal at the School.

He says they are looking for a custodian and 2 Illusivut Indigenous teachers.

The role for a school custodian is someone who cleans the buildings, equipment, and someone who looks after the building, helps clear the snow in the winter months, this position is a full time-permanent position.

The other positions are Indigenous teachers to hold the Illusivut programs.

They are looking for Indigenous teachers, to teach Inuktitut and the Illusivut class both positions are full time and permanent.

Larkin says there is no deadline for any positions, if you would like to apply please send in your resume or drop it off to the JHMS School.

All positions require Code of Conduct, a vulnerable sector check.

Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament

There will be a Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament coming up soon in Makkovik.

Paul Andersen is the Recreation Director in Makkovik.

The tournament will be Friday, November 22nd until Saturday November 23rd, 2019.

It will take place at the Community Gym in Makkovik.

Registration for Grades 7 and up will be $10 per player and the deadline is on November 20th at 3 pm.

Those who have registered will be put into teams.

Seeking Children for the 2nd Annual Gussie Bennett Memorial Ball Hockey Tournament

The 2nd Annual Gussie Bennett Memorial Ball Hockey Tournament will be taking place on the weekend of November 22nd to the 24th, 2019 here in Nain.

William Flowers is the Director of Minor Hockey with the Nain Recreation Department.

He says he is looking for any children ages 12 and under that would want to play in the 2nd Annual Gussie Bennett Memorial Ball Hockey Tournament this month.

He says there will be two divisions; the 12 and under division and the 13 and up adult division.

Registrations will be $10 a player and will be Co-ed.

The maximum players per team are ten, and minimum players are five.

The deadline for registrations is on November 20th, 2019.

Flowers adds that he will be having a draft to pick teams as soon as he has enough players.

The OK Society will have more information on the tournament once it becomes available.

Illusuak Grand Opening in Nain

The OK Society would like to remind the public that the Illusuak Community Centre in Nain is finally completed.

Jim Lyall is the Minister for Cultural, Recreation and Tourism and Ordinary Member for Nain.

He says that the grand opening will be held on November 21st, 2019 at 11 am.

There will be elders and youth selected from each community to attend this opening.

Lyall added that there will also be Nunatsiavut Officials, AngajukKât, Inuit Tapariit kanadami and Provincial Government that will be attending the grand opening.
