Nain DHSD schedule

The Nain Department of Health and Social Development are holding different programs throughout the week.

Their business hours are from Monday to Friday, from: 8:30am to 12pm and 1pm to 4:30pm.

On Mondays they hold Paint Nights held by DHSD staff and on Monday evenings they hold the Adult Support group by the Mental Health team at 6:30pm located up stairs.

On Tuesday evenings they have a Social card game held by Mental Health team.

Wednesdays they have Senior’s merchandise bingo in the afternoon held by Community Health workers- 1:30-3:30.

And all day on Wednesdays they hold a Wooding program during the winter held by Mental Health team.

And Wednesday evenings they hold the prenatal program held by Public Health team (Subject to change) at 6:00pm.

Thursdays they hold the Crafts in the afternoon and Duffle workshop in the evenings held by Mental Health team (times can change but usually from 1:00-3:30.

And on Fridays the Diabetes bingo is held once a month that starts at 1:00pm and from 1-4:30 they also holds the family connections in the afternoons.

2020 Europe trip

A meeting has been scheduled in Nain for the event of the 2020 Europe Trip.

There will be information meeting for students’ parents and guardians, even though the students are not yet registered for the Europe Tour.

The meeting will take place at the Grade 4-12 JHMS library on Monday, February 11, 2019 at 7pm.

Tony Tibbo is one of the teachers at JHMS and says this will be the last formal meeting for the new students travellers before the group is finalized.

Again Parents and guardians are welcome to attend the meeting about the 2020 Europe Tour on Monday, February 11 at 7pm.

MHA Randy Edmunds

On Monday, MHA Randy Edmunds will be traveling to Nain with a representative from Transportation and Works to hold an information session on the new ferry service for Nunatsiavut and Natuashish.

The session will be on Monday, February 11 at 10am at the Pulâpvik Room.

This is subject to weather and will be rescheduled in the event of adverse weather conditions.

Pilot Project

The Nunatsiavut Government will be holding a new pilot project this month.

We spoke with Shirley Jararuse who is the Language Program Coordinator with NG.

She says they are looking for participants for this new language program.

Sinâni Inuttut project will be a 6 week pilot project.

Theoren Fleury coming to Nain

Theoren Fleury, a former Canadian professional ice hockey player who played in the (NHL) National hockey league will be coming to Nain tomorrow, Friday, February 8, 2019.

Fluery is a Stanley cup champion, Olympic gold medalist, World cup junior champion and is an expert in the field of relational trauma, also from winning the Stanley cup to struggling with substance abuse and coping with sexual abuse as a young hockey player.

He will be presenting a wealth of knowledge to the topics pursuing excellence, personal growth and overcoming sexual abuse and trauma.

Fleury will have a presentation at the Jens Haven Memorial school gym for grades 7 and up.

And at 6:30pm Fleury will be at the Jeremias Sillett Community Centre for a community presentation, there will be a community feast and seafood will be served.

After the presentation Theoren Fluery will be signing autographs and will be taking photos. There will also be photos for sale for anyone to purchase.

2019 Arctic Students on Ice expedition

The Students on Ice Expedition are looking for youth to take part in their Arctic 2019 Expedition.

Youth between the ages of 14 to 24 years of age can apply.

Full scholarships are available for a majority of participants including Nunatsiavut students.

The deadline to submit your application for the Arctic 2019 is Sunday, February 17, 2019.

The Arctic 2019 Expedition will be held from July 23 to August 7, 2019.

Free legal support sessions

The Journey Project is an ongoing partnership between the public legal information association of NL and the Newfoundland and Labrador sexual assault crisis and prevention centre to enhance supports and responses for survivors of sexual violence in Newfoundland and Labrador within the justice system.

Legal clinic are being held in Nain on February 12th and 13th where lawyers will be available to provide free legal consultations to community members.

Persons who meet the eligibility criteria can receive up to four hours of free legal advice from a practicing lawyer in NL.

The journey project employs two legal support navigators, who are available by phone, email, text and in person to provide trauma-informed support, general legal information, referrals for legal advice through the Sexual violence legal support service, and referrals to other community resources.

The legal support navigators will also meet face to face with clientsto provide court accompaniment and other supports, where practicable.

Community legal clinics will be held at the Pulâpvik building (previously Parks Canada building) on Tuesday, February 12 from 6-8pm and Wednesday, February 13 from 9am-12pm. Appointments and drop-ins available.

LATP safety training 2019

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership is offering safety training for anyone who is unemployed.

This is a great way to support individuals who need the safety training to continue in finding employment and also a great way to access work at the Voisey’s Bay or other industrial sites, but you much have these certificates.

LATP will be offering 6 different safety training in Nain this March.

Janelle Barbour is the NG Career Counsellor with LATP; we did an interview with her last week to find out more about the safety training workshops.

There will be six Safety training workshops in Nain starting March 18- March 23rd.

To enroll in these safety training workshops you must be unemployed and willing to take part in every training workshop, and you must fill out the application form with Janelle Barbour.

The safety training will include: Fall Protection, Standard First Aid, Transportation of Dangerous goods, Back injury Prevention, Power line Hazards and WHMIS 2015.

Dates for the following are: Fall protection on March 18 and 19; and the Standard First Aid course will be offered on March 20 to 21st, The Transportation of Dangerous goods will be offered on March 22 in the morning followed by the Back Injury Prevention in the afternoon; The Power line Hazards will be offered on March 23 in the morning and the WHMIS 2015 will be offered in the afternoon.

47th Combined Councils AGM

The Combined Councils of Labrador are holding their 47th Annual General Meeting in Happy Valley- Goose Bay.

The meetings started at Hotel North Two today Thursday, February 7 and continue into tomorrow Friday, February 8, 2019.

Provincial Ministers and MHA’s are attending the AGM.

The Combined Councils of Labrador represents the interests of municipalities in the region.

No Police officers in Postville

The community of Postville are without police officers now since last December and the community are unsure when they will return back to their community.

It could be a hard situation or problem without any police officers in the community.

Glen Sheppard is the AngajukKâk for Postville Inuit Community Government.

He says an interview was done on this issue regarding no RCMP in the community since Dec. 17, 2018.

Sheppard says Postville should have police presence in the community 20 days per month, which was said in an agreement that was put in place through the office of the justice minister.

Sheppard says “I still cannot get a confirmed date of when the police will be back in Postville on a regular police patrol.”
