Free health programs workshops DHSD

The Department of Health and Social Development in Nain will be holding free health program workshops for anyone who has diabetes, arthritis, chronic pain, anxiety, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, thyroid disorders.

Community health worker Alice Okkuatsiak along with Jane Merkuratsuk and Dawn Michelin will be holding these workshops.

The workshops will be 2 and a half hours a week for six weeks. The workshop will start on Thursday February 7 @ 6pm at the DHSD building.

At the workshops you will:

• Learn how to live better with your condition
• Learn how to deal with challenges including fatigue, pain, depression and frustration
• Learn better ways to communicate with your doctor, family and friends
• Discover exercises to help improve strength, flexibility and energy
• Learn how to eat healthier

Workshop for women

The Nunatsiavut Government Status of Women’s office is looking for two women who are beneficiaries from each of the coastal communities and North West River and HVGB to attend to a two day communications skills workshop in HVGB.

She says they received funding to bring two women from each of the north coast communities, NWR and HVGB to attend to this workshop.

We spoke with Tracy Ann Evans Rice the Nunatsiavut Status of Women Coordinator with the NG.

The workshop is focused on improving writing skills and to improve public speaking skills.

The workshop will be held on Tuesday February 26 and Feb 27, 2019.

And Deadline to apply is tomorrow Thursday February 7.

Evans-Rice adds that they want two women from Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Rigolet, Makkovik, North West River and HVGB.

They need 14 women in total to attend to this workshop, Your Flights, accommodations and meals will be paid for.

She says there will be a facilitator from the Canadian Execrative Service Organization doing this workshop.

Nunatsiavut Polar Bear Licenses

Nunatsiavut Government recently received 12 polar bear licenses for 2019 from the Provincial Government.

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable Resources for NG. ( Aulatsiji asitattausunik Pivianattunik.)

He says the first draw for Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries allowable harvest was last Friday, February 1 st.

Brroomfield says the beneficiaries will have their licenses for 7 days from the time they were issued the license.

And if they don’t fill that licence within the 7 days it will drawn to the next person.

He says the polar bear harvest will stay open till June 30th, that’s when the season usually close.

In addition to allocations of these licences for the north coast community harvests, there’s 3 each for Nain and Hopedale, and 2 each for Makkovik, Postvlle and Rigolet.

PSSP/Inuit Pathways deadline

The Deadline to apply for funding and to renew your application for the 2019/2020 academic year for Post Secondary Students Program and for Inuit Pathways Program is Friday March 1st, 2019.

Jodie Lane is the Education Manager with PSSP with Nunatsiavut.

She says if you wish to be considered for any funding to attend to any post secondary studies during the 2019/2020 academic year you must complete the application form.

Forms and applications must be submitted to their offices by no later than 4:30pm on March 1, 2019.

She says applications received after this date will not be considered until all on time applications and renewals are processed.

Lane says don’t delay, complete your application forms and send It in now.

The Hebron family archaeology project

The Hebron Family Archaeology project will have a meeting tomorrow Thursday February 7 at 3 pm at the JS centre.

This meeting will be an update about the work from last year, as well as plans for this year.

Safety tips

The Nain Department of Health and Social Development will be holding a safety program called “Life on the Edge Program” this is for youth ages 15-35 years.

On Monday February 25 and Feb 26th youth will learn about ice safety, avalanche safety, basic GPS usage and how to read maps.

They will watch the Umiak 1 sail into Edwards Cove and to learn where the ice bridge crossings are and how to make an emergency shelter.

Polar bear licenses

Ok Radio spoke with Todd Broomfield who is the Director of Renewable Resources for the Nunatsiavut government, about the 2019 polar bear licenses.

Broomfield says The Nunatsiavut Government received 12 licenses for the opening season this past Friday February 1.

He says beneficiaries are now out hunting polar bear.

Broomfield says the polar bear hunting season will stay open until the end of June.
