Easter Schedule

OKâlaKatiget Radio is once again airing the Special Inuktitut Church Services during Easter.

Palm Sunday, April 14 (Palmarum) at 10 am and 5 pm.

OK Radio will be holding regular radio shows on Monday April 15, Tuesday April 16 and Wednesday April 17.

On Maundy Thursday on April 18, church services will be aired from 11am and 5pm.

The OKâlaKatiget Radio staff will not on air on Good Friday, April 19.

Easter Sunday April 21, OK will only air church services at 10am and 5pm.

OK Radio will air the church services on Easter Monday, April 22 at 10am and 5pm.

Please note- OK Radio will only be airing the church services on the above Sunday afternoons.

OKâlaKatiget Society will be back to regular air times starting on Tuesday April 23, 2019.

Elders conference part 3

The Elders Conference finished off here in Nain Last evening.

Inuit elders from all five Inuit communities, Upper Lake area and the Canadian Constituency arrived to Nain on Monday to attend to this year’s Elder Conference.

This year they have guest’s speakers from Northern Quebec attending for this special occasion.

The Elders Coordinator this year is Beverly Hunter from Hopedale.

Ethel Pijogge Memorial Festival

Today, April 12, 2019 marks Day three of the Ethel Pijogge Memorial Festival in Hopedale.

The schedule for today started with the dog team race at 9am this morning.

The Labrathon Competition started at 1:30pm.

At 4pm, they will be judging snow sculptures.

From 6-8pm will be a Family Easter Craft Night in Partnership with CYN @ NCC.

And the deadline to register for the fishing contest will be at 8pm tonight.

To register for the fishing contest is $10.

On the Last day of the festival, April 13, Saturday the fishing contest will start at 7am and ends at 7pm.

To end off the festival there will be a Community bonfire at 8pm.

Easter Games Schedule

As we said yesterday, here is the other half of the Easter Schedule for the 25th to the 30th of April.

On Thursday, April 25, starting at 10am at the Jeremias Sillitt Centre will be the Children’s Easter Glow in the Dark Dance Party and Easter Egg Hunt. Hotdogs, juice, and jello will be served for children’s lunch.

And in the evening will be Adult Cash Bingo starting at 5:15pm followed by Entertainment Night with the Flummies at 7:30pm.

The Entertainment Night will also be open to any local performers.

On Friday, April 26 at 10am & 1pm, will be Children’s Movie Day. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and snacks will be provided.

In the evening for 16 and up, there will be Adults Evening of men’s and women’s Pool Tournament starting at 7pm followed by the 1st Annual Martin R. Jararuse Easter Dart Tournament for ages 16 & up.

On Saturday, April 27 will be Children’s Inuit Games starting at 10am, and depending on the ice conditions, there will be Skidoo races starting at 1pm as well as Adult Ice Games.

In the evening, starting at 5pm will be the Recreation Giant Radio Bingo with $1000 Mini Jackpot and $5000 Jackpot. And at 9pm, the Flummies will be performing at the Atsanik Lodge with an admission of $10.

On Sunday, April 28, there will be a Community Breakfast at 11:30am to 1pm as well as a sliding party which will be by the JS Community Centre. And at 1pm will be target shooting.

In the evening, starting at 7pm will be Adult Evening Events at the JS Community Centre along with a Mystery Door Prize Draw.

On Monday, April 29, Adult Games will be starting off with Night of Minute to Win It, Beauty Pageant and many others, starting at 7pm.

And finally, on Tuesday, April 30, this year’s Easter Games will be finishing off with the Easter Games Awards night at 7pm followed by Family Fireworks at the Nain Harbour.

Elders Conference day 4

Today marks day 4 for the Elder’s Conference.

This is the final day before Elders head back to their home communities.

The Elder Coordinator, Beverly Hunter will be holding an Entertainment night this evening for the Elders and the community for the last day.

Performances will be held at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre starting at 7:30pm.

All are welcome to attend and for those who would like to perform can do so, or go up to watch performances done by the Nain Choir, Nain Brass Brand, local throat singers and the Beardos.

Cathy Ford is the Napvâlavut Project Manager with the Nunatsiavut Government.

She will be giving information about her project with Nanilavut which means “ Let us find them” this project will be bringing closure to Inuit families who are still searching for lost loved ones from the TB epidemic in the 1940’s to 1960’s.

Hopedale By-Election Results

Following are the unofficial election results from Tuesday’s by election for Ordinary Member for Hopedale, as provided by the Nunatsiavut Electoral officer:

The official declaration of the winning candidates is expected to be made Friday, April 12, once we all the ballots have been received by the NEO.

The Nunatsiavut Assembly meets at least four times a year in Hopedale.

Ordinary Members represents Inuit from their respective Constituencies in the Nunatsiavut Assembly.

Smart ICE facilitator

The Smart ICE is expanding into the North and they need to find a facilitator to operate their office in Nain.

Carolann Harding is the Executive Director with Smart ICE.

She says they own office space in Nain, located on 2 Morhardt Road.

Harding says she will be traveling to Nain middle of May.

And this job position as the Northern Production Lead Facilitator will operate the Northern Production Center.

This facilitator will have to maintain day to day operations and will work with youth from the community and train them to use the smart technology and smart buoys.

Ethel Pijogge Memorial Schedule

Today marks day 2 of the Ethel Pijogge Memorial Festival in Hopedale.

From 7-9 this morning, they had a free Community Breakfast @ the Amos Comenius Memorial School.

At 2pm to 5pm, at the NCC & Fire hall, they will be selling Bingo cards.

And the target shooting competition for the men and women’s division will start at 4pm.

Starting at 7pm will be the Giant Radio Bingo.

At 9am tomorrow, April 12, 2019 the Ethel Pijogge Memorial Dog Team Race will start at the Hopedale Harbour.

Nain’s Easter Games Schedule Part 1

This year’s Easter games will be running from Saturday, April 20th to Sunday, April 30th, 2019 here in Nain.

To set off the games, a Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Tournament starts on Saturday at 1 pm.

In the evening, there will be POW’s 3rd Annual Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament

The next games for Monday, April 22 will be Children’s and Adults Ice Games starting at 12:30pm.

In the evening, both 13 and up Ball Hockey Tournament and 120’s Card Game Tournament will be starting at 6pm.

On Tuesday, April 23, starting at 1pm will be Children’s Carnival Day as well as Adults Ice Games. Cotton candy, popcorn, and helium balloons will be for sale

In the evening will be Recreation Radio Bingo, Plastic Bag Akulik Making, and Adult Inuit Games.

On Wednesday, April 24 will be Adults and Children’s Games starting at 1pm at the Nain Harbour.

In the evening will be Adult evening Events at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre starting at 7pm.

Canteen services will be available throughout by various sponsors.

And the Easter games fees for adults 13 years and up will be $3 per event, Youth 12 years and under will be $1 per event, and the fee for Seniors 55 and up are free.

The Easter passes are available at the NICG, and can be used for free admission into the Easter games.

Adults passes are $10, Youth Passes are $5, and seniors 55 plus are free.

Youth Fishing Trip & Boil Up

On Saturday, April 13, 2019 there will be a Youth Fishing Trip and a Boil Up.

This is for ages 16-30.

Ocean Wyatt is the Youth Outreach Worker, with DHSD.
