Easter Schedule

Public Service Announcement from the OKâlaKatiget Radio Department on the airing of the Easter church services for 2019.

Palm Sunday is on Sunday April 14 and church services will be aired from 10am and at 5pm, the Hosanna service.

OKâlaKatiget Radio will be holding regular radio shows on Monday April 15, Tuesday April 16 and Wednesday April 17.

On Maundy Thursday on April 18, church services will be aired from 11am and 5pm.

The OKâlaKatiget Radio staff will not on air on Good Friday, April 19.

Easter Sunday April 21, OK will only air church services at 10am and 5pm.

OK Radio will air the church services on Easter Monday, April 22 at 10am and 5pm.

OKâlaKatiget Society will be back to regular air times starting on Tuesday April 23, 2019.

Ethel Pijogge Memorial Festival

The 2019 Ethel Pijogge Memorial Festival started in Hopedale today, April 10.

The race started this morning 9am at the Harbour.

There will be a Community Feast this evening, at the Nanuk Centre at 5pm.

You are to register for the Labrathon by 5pm today, April 10, and it’s for the ages 16-44, and 45+.

1st prize for the Labrathon is cash prizes of $800, 2nd place of $600, and 3rd place of $400, for 1 male and 1 female.

The Beauty Contest will also begin tonight April 10, at 8pm. 1 Male and 1 Female are to enter as a team, and it will be the 80’s Theme.

Cash prizes will be given to the Beauty Contest winners of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

You can register for the Fishing Contest by Friday, April 12, 8pm. There is a $10 registration fee.

Starting tomorrow, April 11 at 7am-9am there will be a Community Breakfast at the ACMS.

Day 3 Elders conference

Today marks day 3 for the Elders Conference in Nain.

Inuit elders from all five Inuit communities, Upper Lake area and the Canadian Constituency arrived to Nain on Monday to attend to these years Elder Conference.

This year they have guest’s speakers from Northern Quebec attending for this special occasion.

The Elders Coordinator this year is Beverly Hunter from Hopedale.

They will give us information about what they think about the Elders Conference they are attending.

Ethel Pijogge Memorial Festival

The 2019 Ethel Pijogge Memorial Festival will be starting on Wednesday, April 10 and run until Saturday, April 13 in Hopedale.

The four day festival will have events such as; Community Feast, Beauty Pageant, Bingo, Labrathon, Target Shooting, and the Ethel Pijogge Memorial Dog Team Race.

The race will start at the Hopedale Harbour at 9am on that day.

The community feast will begin on Wednesday, April 10 5pm, at the Nanuk Centre.

1st place winners for the Snow Sculptures will get $500, 2nd place will get $300, and 3rd place will receive $200.

On Saturday, April 13 there will be a Community Bonfire behind the Nanuk Centre. There will be a door prize of an Air Borealis Ticket.

Postville/Makkovik Hope Walk

Postville and Makkovik will be doing a joint HOPE Walk on April 12-13. This walk is a walk for life. HOPE stands for Hold–On–Pain-Ends.

Vyann Andersen-Goudie is the Mental Health Worker at the DHSD in Postville.

She says so far, there are 6 participants for this walk and will be meeting up between the two communities, which are approximately 25 km outside of each community.

We also contacted Ashley Andersen from Makkovik.

She says there will be 13 adults and 8 Children joining from Makkovik.

The group will camp out for the night and will be having activities such as campfire stories and games.

For those not interested in camping out, community members are welcome to join the group for the evening and then meet back up again the next morning.

After a night in tent, the walkers will start the walk back to their community.

Participants are challenged to walk as far as they can; whether 1 km, 5 km, 10 km’s or the whole way.

She also says that there will be drivers along the route for those that want to get a ride back home or need some water.

LATP Camp attendant

Today is the final day for the Camp Attendant training with the Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership.

Keith Jacque is the Executive Director with LATP.

He says this 11 day training program was held at the Nain Atsanik Lodge upstairs.

They are having their closing ceremony this afternoon at 2pm.

Jacque says the college administrator from Happy Valley Goose Bay was supposed to arrive to Nain today, but the flights are on weather hold and the closing ceremony still will go ahead.

The instructor for the training was Mary Byrne.

He says 10 participants who took part in the training have all successfully completed the training for the Camp Attendant training.

Congratulations to all 10 participants who completing the Camp Attendant Training.

Elders Conference

CYN and Mr. Volleyball Tournament

The 10th Annual CYN & MR Volleyball Tournament will be held in Nain on the weekend of May 3rd to the 5th.

All teams must have at least 5 players, Maximum of 7 players.

It will be for Male and Female Divisions.

The tournament will be held at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre at 6pm.

To register your team you are to contact Bradley Lampe CYN Fieldworker at 922-2691 or 922-2690.

Deadline for registration is on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 4pm.

RCMP volleyball tournament

The 35th annual RCMP volleyball tournament took place over the weekend.

Charlotte Lucy-Piercy is one of the organizers for the tournament.

She says the tournament started at 3pm on Saturday April 6 in Hopedale and ended yesterday evening.

This year they had 9 female and 6 male teams registered.

The organizers this year were herself, Jacqueline Dicker, Terrance Munro; and Boas Mitsuk and Danielle Pottle helped with the schedule.

Here are the results for the 2019 RCMP tournament:

The Gold medalists went to Team: Misters Girls, The female silver medallists were the Fox & the Hounds.

For the male division: the Gold medalists went to the Over Kill team, and the silver medal went to Team Makkovik.

She says the Female MVP went to Jessica Winters from Makkovik and the
Male MVP went to Darryl Flowers of Hopedale.

And the Female Most Sportsmen Like went to Holly Andersen from Makkovik
Male Most Sportsmen Like went to Robin Lucy.
