Makkovik Heritage Dog team Race

The 39th Annual Dog team Race went ahead in Makkovik on March 30th.

Rachel Edmunds was one of the volunteers for the race.

She says there were 4 teams that participated in this race; 3 from Makkovik and 1 from Hopedale.

The 25km race started from Makkovik, to North head, crossing to Gull Island, and then back to Makkovik.

1st place of $1000 went to Perry Voisey from Makkovik
2nd place went to Herb Pijogge from Hopedale with a prize of $800
Buddy Morgan Winters from Makkovik came 3rd with a prize of $600

The best looking team went to Herb Pijogge and the most spirited driver went to Rex Voisey with a prize $52.

Edmunds adds that as of now, the next dog team race is supposed to be going to Rigolet where they were supposed to have it this past year.

Nominations for Hopedale

There are three candidates who are running for Ordinary Member with the Nunatsiavut Government in Hopedale.

Nanette Blake is the Election Officer for Nunatsiavut government.

She says the three nominees are:

Charlotte Lucy Piercy
Greg Flowers and James Abia Tuttauk

Blake says the polling station will at the Nanuk centre from 8am to 8pm.

Blake adds they will have three days to count the ballots.

Once they are counted, they will let the winner know.

Land & Sea

This year marks the 55 season for television show of the Land & Sea.

Pauline Thornhill is a television host and producer of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on the Land & Sea.

She says they were in Nain recently to film a documentary about the family of the Webbs.

She says they had a wonderful trip in Nain, which was her first trip to Nain.

LATP update

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership is very busy this year, with Training and the Vale underground mining project.

Keith Jacque is the Executive Director with LATP.

He says they are currently holding the Camp Attendant training in Nain.

Jacque says there is a huge demand for the work force as a Camp attendant in Voiseys Bay.

He will also give us information about the underground mining as well.

RCMP Volleyball Tournament

This year marks the 35th Annual RCMP Volleyball Tournament held in Hopedale.

Charlotte Lucy Piercy is the community constable in Hopdale.

She says the Tournament is being held by herself, Constable Terrence Monro, Jacquie Dicker, Derrick Rayner, and Danielle Pottle.

The tournament was to begin today Friday, April 5, but due to bad weather it has been rescheduled for tomorrow Saturday, April 6.

There is a fee of $20 per player, and monies collected covers the Prizes and Trophies.

1st place winners will receive Gold Medals along with a personalized shirt and a $200 gift card.

2nd place winners will receive Silver Medals, and a $50 Gift card.

The tournament will be held at the Nanuk Centre.

Lucy Piercy added that she would like to say a big thanks to Toby Obed the Score Keeper for taking part, the Hopedale Committee for sponsoring the gift cards, the Nanuk Centre staff for using the gym and Kitchen, and to the community for your support.

Nain Family resource Center Easter activities

The Family Resource Center in Nain will be offering a few Easter activities.

This Monday April 8 they will be holding an Easter Bingo; bingo will start at 6pm and end at 8pm.

And a parent night will be held on Wednesday April 10 for parent’s night, this is only for parents, they will be decorating an Easter cake.

Cakes will be provided and will already be baked so parents can come and decorate.

The Easter cake decorating will be that evening starting from 7-9pm at the Family Resource Center.

Polar bear kills

The Nunatsiavut Government had 12 Polar bear licences available for Nunatsiavut beneficiaries.

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable Resources for the Nunatsiavut Government.

He says to date, 9 of 12 Polar bear licences were filled.

There are 2 licences in Postville, and 1 in Hopedale remaining for this hunting season.

He also said the open season for the polar bear hunt will be in effect until June 30th.

Also, 22 of 39 Moose licences have been filled and the 2018- 2019 hunting season closed on March 31st.

Language Program Coordinator update

The Nunatsiavut Government is offering more Inuktitut programs to beneficiaries to strengthen our language.

Shirley Jararuse is the Language Coordinator for NG.

She says she’s been busy with running 2 programs; the Inuttut ilivallianik and the Master apprentice.

She added that she had masters and apprentices from along the coast.

36th annual RCMP volleyball tournament

This year marks the 36th annual RCMP Volley Ball tournament.

This tournament starts this Saturday April 6 in Hopedale.

And deadline to register teams was yesterday evening at 4:30pm.

There is 10 female teams and 7 male teams are registered.

We will have more information once it becomes available.

23 year old assaults officer

A Happy Valley-Goose Bay man is facing two charges for assaulting a police officer.

At approximately 8:00 a.m. on April 2, 2019, Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP responded to a report of a break-in at a residence in the community.

A man entered the home and refused to leave.

While attempting to arrest the man he became violent and spit and kicked the officer, causing a minor injury.

The 23-year-old man from Goose Bay is facing numerous charges that include mischief, two counts of failure to comply with a court order, three counts of uttering threats and two counts of assaulting a police officer.

He was held in custody and appeared in court this yesterday morning.

He is now remanded until today.
