Cap and Gown/Awards

We spoke with Principal Jacob Larkin of Jens Haven Memorial School here in Nain.

He says this evening Thursday, June 13 will be the Kindergarten’s Cap and Gown.

It will be at the school gym starting at 7pm.

All is welcome.

Larkin also would like to remind the public that the Awards Ceremonies will be on Thursday, June 27, 2019.

Grades K-6 awards will be at 9am and grades 7-12 will be that evening at 6:30pm along with the Grade’s 12 Cap and Gown.

Mental Health Unit at LGH

The Member of Parliament (MP) Yvonne Jones announced yesterday a contract has been awarded to design a new six-bed mental health unit at the Labrador Health Center in Happy Valley Goose Bay.

MP Jones says that the contract has been awarded to Fougere Menchenton Architecture Incorporated and it is valued at $426,000.

Jones says that the new unit will include services that are inclusive and culturally appropriate for all Labradorians and is looking forward to seeing Labradorians getting treatment they need that are closer to home.

The tender for construction will be issued in the fall and the project is expected to be completed in 2022.

Nigivik Programs

The Nigivik Centre is busy preparing for their programs with the Department of Health & Social Development.

We contacted Shelley Dicker who is the Community Food Worker with the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says they are planned for a Father’s Day Brunch tomorrow, June 14 at 10-11:30 for all fathers and grandfathers.

She also says they will be making cinnamon twists on Monday or Tuesday.

She would like to notify the public that instead of doing monthly schedules, they will be planning weekly programs, and are looking for people who are looking to do programs and get paid for the day.

Dicker adds that she will be busy with helping for the barbecue for the National Indigenous Peoples Day on the 21st with the Nain DHSD.

Interview with Simeon Nochasak (Audio)

Simeon Nochasak has been playing the organ for the Makkovik Moravian Church for many years.

Nochasak was taught by his father to play the organ when he lived in Hebron.

He says he had also played at the Hopedale Moravian Church.

Year end Concert a Success

Jens Haven Memorial School held their Year End Concert last night in Nain at the 4-12 school gym.

All the students that performed did an amazing job.

There were many people from the community that came out to watch the talented students sing, dance, and play instruments.

Puppeteers Wanted for National Indigenous Peoples Day

The Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism are looking for two puppeteers.

The puppeteers will be needed for a show on National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st, 2019 from 3-3:30pm.

The rate of pay is $38.40 and the deadline is June 14, 2019 @ 4pm.

Science Camp

Labrador institute will soon be holding a Science Camp for students.

It will run from July 8-12, 2019, and will be located at North West River, and Happy Valley Goose-Bay Labrador.

Labrador institute will be running a summer camp and is open to Innu and Inuit youth in Labrador going into grade 8, 9, 10, and 11, in the fall of September 2019.

The Summer Camp is in Partnership with Innu Nation, NunatuKavut, and Nunatsiavut.

We spoke with Jodie Lane who is the Education Manager for Inuit Pathways in Makkovik.

She says that the camp will be focusing on tradition learning and the indigenous culture, and other traditional things.

It will be free of charge so there will be no charge for participation.

She says this will bring youth together, and will be using traditional cultural activities during this summer camp.

Elders will also be invited as well from different groups.

Lane says she is helping with the names of elders who can or would like to attend, and she is helping coordinate.

Torngat Fisheries AGM (Audio)

The Torngat Fisheries Cooperative had their Annual General Meeting recently in Makkovik.

Keith Watts is the General Manager.

He says all of the BOD’s was in attendance from along the north coast.

Watts says there is a new vessel been built for the Scallop fishery.

Flat making program

A new program is being offered in Hopedale by the Nunatsiavut Department of Health & Social Development.

In partnership with the Youth Outreach Worker and the Community Shed Coordinator they will be doing a flat making program.

Right now they are looking for interested youth between the ages of 12-24.

The seats are limited of five seats available and this will be a first come first serve basis.

The instructor for this program is Ross Flowers and he started his position in Hopedale yesterday June 10, 2019.

This is a great opportunity for youth to learn how to make a homemade flat.

Girl’s Quest Program

The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science is currently accepting applications from Labrador youth for the Girl Quest 2019.

Girl Quest gives young youth the experience to explore the depths of engineering, science, mathematics, and technology in a way that is interesting, fun and educational.

Each year a new curriculum and resources are explored for the Girl Quest Program.

There are a total of eight scholarship spaces available for July 21-27, 2019.

To apply, girls must be 9-12 years old, who have a love of science and be able to travel to St. John’s on Sunday July 21, returning Saturday, July 27.

Preference will be given to those who have not attended Girl Quest in the past.

There are also opportunities for two chaperones to travel and stay with the group.

Chaperones must be at least 19 years of age and provide references and recent criminal record check.

Acceptance to the program offers return air travel to and from St. John’s , accommodations in Memorial’s on-campus residences, meals and snacks throughout the week as well as fun-team building activities.

There are no additional fees for materials or camp activities.
