Language Summit

A Language Summit is scheduled to take place in Nain in November.

Shirley Jararuse is the Language Program Coordinator for the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism.

Jararuse says that they are expecting approximately 50 participants to take part in the summit and they are hoping to include participants from the other Inuit regions.

Jararuse adds that a committee has been formed from the department of education and department of health to work on the logistics.

The meeting will focus on developing a language strategy.

Jararuse says an application process will be put in place for potential participants for the summit.

She adds that a theme has been selected for the two day event but it still has not been publicized.

The Language Summit will be held on November 4 to the 6, 2019 and a logo contest for the Language Summit will be released, and Jararuse says also to look out for that advertisement in the very near future.

Language Nest in Hopedale

The Language Nest Program in Hopedale will be closing for the summer on June 26, 2019.

Tracy Dicker is the Day Care Administrator and the Supervisor for Inuaggualuit at The Department of Health and Social Development office.

Dicker says there are currently two children enrolled in the program with two child care workers.

She adds that if there were more children in the program a schedule for rotation would need to be enforced due to lack of staffing.

The two children who are with the Language Nest will be taking part in the Day Care Center’s year end party that will take place on Friday June 21st.

Dicker adds that the Language Nest program will open again on September 3rd and registration will take place a few days later after opening day.

In other news from DHSD in Hopedale, blasting for the new DHSD building took place last year and the foundation for the structure will begin this year.

It was scheduled for the new building to be completed for the fall of 2019, but Dicker expects the new building to be completed for 2020.

Chinook Vets in Nain

The Chinook Veterinarians left Nain yesterday and travelled to Natuashish.

Dr. Peter Folley is a Veterinarian and he says that they conducted 23 surgeries while in Nain and had approximately 90 out patients including one rabbit.

Dr. Folley says that some of the outpatients included rabies vaccine, distemper, heart problems, teeth problems, and three had to be euthanized.

Dr. Folley adds that they had five students with the team along with three veterinarians.

The team will be in Natuashish for four days before heading back to Happy Valley Goose Bay and Prince Edward Island.

NICG Update (Audio)

The town of Nain is busy with many projects around Nain.

We spoke with Joe Dicker, the AngajukKâk for the Nain Inuit Community Government.

He says a few things like the housing development, replacing waterlines, maintaining the roads, etc. are being worked on.

He also updates about the Nain Husky Centre and the Nain Airstrip.

Summer Student Employment Opportunity

The Recreation Department is looking for Summer Recreation Assistants to work in the Recreation Department of the Nain Inuit Community Government.

Any applications must be enrolled in Post-Secondary, attending high school or presently enrolled in school, college, university with definite plans to return in the fall.

Social Insurance Number is a requirement for employment and you must be 15 years of age or older and have a clean Certificate of Conduct.

The hours will be of flexible work schedule, $11.50 an hour, with 35 hours per week.

The tentative period of employment is from June 27 to August 21, 2019.

Any applications should be submitted to the Nain Inuit Community Government Office by Friday, June 21 at 4pm.

REC. Department, DHSD, Fathers Day Activities

Alice Okkuatsiak who is the Community Health Worker for the Department of Health and Social Development in Nain.

She says there will be a Father’s Day lunch today, June 14, at 2:30pm, for Father’s only.

And They will be serving Zinger wings (if available), pizza, hot dogs, sandwiches, cupcakes, chips, juice, tea, water and coffee.

There will also be a door prize of a $150 value of your own choice from Franks General Store plus a rod and some hooks.

The Nain Recreation Department will also be holding Fathers Day Activities.

We spoke with Lisa Ivany the Recreation Director for The Nain Inuit Community Government.

She says that there will be a Father’s Day Bingo on Sunday, June 16, 2019,
at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre at 3pm for all men ages 16 and up, no children permitted.

Doors will open at 2:30pm and cards will be $20 each, $100 games, $500 Mini Jackpot, and $1500 Jackpot to go.

She says there will also be an award for the Best Father’s Day T-Shirt Contest, and the prizes for 1st place will be $150, 2nd prize $75, and 3rd prize will be $50.
There will also be Door Prizes of a Go Pro Hero 6, along with 5 Bingo vouchers and Snacks will also be served between half time.

Ivany also adds that at 7pm, Bradley Lampe who is the Assistant for the JS Centre will be having a CYN Soft Ball and a Picnic at ball field for all men.

Coastal Father’s Day Activities

Father’s Day is just a couple days away.

We contacted the DHSD’s along the coast to see what activities they have planned.

Linda Pottle who is the Team Leader in Makkovik says they planned a dinner at noon serving shake ‘n bake chicken, mashed potato and vegetables, along with a presentation and door prizes at the DHSD Multi Purpose Room.

We also contacted the Nunatsiavut Government’s Department of Health and Social Development in Postville.

Candy Jacque is the Community Health Worker in Postville for DHSD.

Jacque says the supper will be having a Father’s Day supper starting this evening at 4:30 and they will be serving Mary Brown’s chicken along with salads.

On Sunday, June 16th, 2019, a Father’s Day service will be held starting at 11am.

Pastor Richard Paddock is the Pastor with the Pentecostal Church in Postville.

He says that there will also be a family potluck at the Recreation Hall starting at 6pm, and local musicians will share their music and song with the community.

In Hopedale we spoke to Julianna Flowers who is the Community Health Worker.

She says there will be a Brunch for father’s at 11:30am at the Nanuk Centre on Sunday, June 16.

Winters adds the father’s will have a fishing hat contest and game of Dice as well.

And for Rigolet, their activities for Father’s Day will be on Monday, June 17.

They will be having supper, games, and prize draws at the DHSD Building starting at 5pm.

Sarah Townley on IBED (Audio)

The Labrador Institute and the Faculty of Education of Memorial University have partnered to enable the creation of a Community Based Teacher Education program focused on primary/elementary teacher education in the Aboriginal and Northern context.

Working with the Nunatsiavut Government (NG), the College of the North Atlantic and the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District, Memorial University has developed a program route including an Inuktitut language component, coastal community practicums, and a First Year Success component that began in 2014.

We spoke with Sarah Townley who was born in Hebron but now lives in North West River.

She says that she helped teach Inuktitut with Selma, Susanna, Sybilla and Christine.

Jonathan Lidd gets accepted for NS (Audio)

The Nunavut Sivuniksavut (NS) is dedicated to providing Inuit youth with unique cultural and academic learning experiences that will allow them to develop the knowledge, skills and positive attitudes needed to contribute to the building of the Inuit regions in Canada including Alaska.

Since 1985, it has been affiliated with Algonquin College in Ottawa, through an innovative arrangement that allows NS to remain independent while at the same time providing for formal accreditation. Graduates of the program are enrolled as Algonquin students, receive Algonquin College certificates, and NS staff are college employees.

Jonathan Lidd from Nain had applied to this program and had found out that he is accepted to attend in September.

Hospitality NL

The Nunatsiavut Government and Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador will be holding a one day session on Service Best – Training Session.

Anita Rich is the Tourism Development Officer for the Nunatsiavut Government in Rigolet.

Rich says the Tourism Department for NG will have approximately 20 participants and they are looking for four more interested participants from Nain.

The one day session will include: Use the techniques associated with Service Best service, skills for service recovery, and developing and maintaining a service best attitude.

The participants will learn to create memorable customer experience, identify to customer needs and turn dissatisfied customers into loyal fans.

The sessions will be held in Nain on July 4th, 2019 at the Nunatsiavut Government Board Room and the Deadline to apply is on June 18th, 2018.

And there is a fee to participate in the program for HNL members the cost is $62.50 and for non members the fee is $125.00.
