JHMS Open Mic

The Jens Haven Memorial School in Nain is happy to announce that they will be hosting their first Open Mic event.

This event will be held from 7-9pm on Tuesday, June 25, at the school gym for students and families.

This is an informal event intended to help celebrate the end of the school-year in a fun social setting.

Please note that children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or a guardian.

They will feature performances by both students and teachers.

The Beardos will also be performing at the end of the night.

There will be baked goods and hot chocolate available to purchase during this event, and funds raised will go towards supporting the music program and special events at the school.

Guests are welcome to bring a deck of cards, any games, books, or devices to the Open Mic, but they will have some games provided.

We hope to see you there!

Belgium Pilot Returns to Makkovik

Sam Rutherford; a pilot from Belgium returned to Makkovik last weekend after his ordeal on May 1st, 2019.

Rutherford along with another companion who was from Great Britain accidently crashed south of Makkovik last month and unfortunately his companion did not survive.

Barry Anderson is the AngajukKâk for the Makkovik Inuit Community Government.

Anderson says that there were seven members of the ground, search and rescue team from Makkovik, one volunteer and an RCMP member that went to the crash site to rescue the two men.

Anderson says that Rutherford visited Makkovik while he had the chance to meet with his rescuers and had a get together at the hotel and talked about the event and how the team managed to get to the site of the crash.

Rutherford who is about 47 years old is very thankful to the GSAR members, and a potluck was held at Henry Broomfield’s place.

Rutherford brought with him chocolates from Belgium to show his appreciation to the team.

Nigivik Centre Looking for 4 Individuals

The Nigivik Centre here in Nain is looking for 4 Individuals to start a basic Gardening program.

The Program will be having classes throughout the summer.

They will begin making Garden Boxes once they have the Individuals in place.

Anyone interested in applying for this program you can call Pamela Webb at the Nigivik Centre at 922-2968.

Ordinary Member for Hopedale (Audio)

Greg Flowers of Hopedale was sworn in for Ordinary Member for Nunatsiavut Government sometime last week.

We spoke to him and asked him, what will be his first priority, when he starts his position.

He says the town had conerns about the boat launch, senior’s wood for the winter and a seniors van.

Rigolet Gas

The Gas station in Rigolet closed on May 31st of this year due to no operator.

Paula Flowers is the Chief Administrator Officer for the town of Rigolet.

She says the Rigolet Inuit Community Government had an update to inform the residents that they hope to have an interim operator for the gas station starting on June 19, 2019.

Flowers add the gas station hours will be posted shortly after the interim operator is announced.

Hopedale Community Shed

The Community shed in Hopedale is in operation since December of 2018.

Cassie Jararuse is the Regional Youth Program Services Coordinator for Makkovik.

She says William Dicker is the Community Shed Coordinator and Ross Flowers is the Instructor.

As of today the Instructor Ross Flowers is teaching five youth and five community members how to make a flat.

Jararuse says Nain and Rigolet community sheds are doing the same thing, making flats.

She says the shed is open to the public for anyone who wants to drop by and work on their own projects, But they have to pay for their own supplies.

Coastal Puppet Name Winners

Shirley Jararuse is the Language Program Coordinator for Nunatsiavut Government here in Nain.

She say’s thank you to everybody that submitted their names for the Puppets for each community along the coast, and all names we’re great!

Prizes will be sent to all the winners.

She says Congratulations goes out to all the Puppet Naming Contest Winners along the coast.

The winners for Nain are; Kirsten Dicker who named her Atatsiak Sikepa (translated for Skipper).

Peyton Dicker naming her Anansiak Jessie.

Winners for Hopedale are; Tabea Jararuse naming her Atatsiak Jacko.

Sybil Hunter naming her Anansiak Selma.

For the community off Makkovik winners are; Kylan Pottle who named his Atatsiak Peta and his Anansiak Evie.

For the community of Postville winners; Jim Goudie who named his Atatsiak Ernald and his Anansiak Mary.

And for the town of Rigolet; Sherri Wolfrey who named her Atatsiak Archie and her Anansiak Elsa.

Seized Alcohol Destined for Natuashish

On June 14, 2019, Labrador District General Investigation Section seized a package containing alcohol that was destined for Natuashish.

The package contained 12 750 ML bottles of Royal Reserve.

The RCMP reminds the public that intoxicants, including alcohol, are prohibited in Natuashish.

The investigation is ongoing.

We All Expected to Die (Audio)

Anne Budgell is a well known author and she had a new book published in December 2018.

Her new book is titled “We All Expected to Die” Spanish influenza in Labrador 1918-1919.

The Inuit of the area were decimated, and OKak was abandoned.

Researching for Music (Audio)

There is a researcher presently in Nain doing Music research in Nunatsiavut.

Jeffery Van Den Scott is the researcher.

He says he is part of the Tradition and Transition with Nunatsiavut government.

Van Den Scott adds he is doing research mainly with Inuit from Nunatsiavut, who now live in St. John’s and learning about what kind of music people sing.
