Inuttitut Speakers for IlinniaKatigennik

The IlinniaKatigennik Show will be starting again this August.

The Nunatsiavut Culture, Recreation and Tourism are looking for Inuttitut speakers that are interested in telling stories, singing songs, and reading books.

They will be travelling along the coast this August to gather recordings.

TaKuaKautik Update

The TaKuaKautik is a food bank ran by volunteers at the Nigivik Centre here in Nain.

Brenda Jararuse is the Chair of the volunteer group for the TaKuaKautik.

She says that they accepts any donations from the community for anybody who is able to donate any food to the food bank, also from anybody else outside of Nain.

Jararuse would like to remind the public that they are open every last Thursday of the month from 6-8pm at the Nigivik Centre here in Nain.

Young Girls Empowerment & Personal Development

There will be a Young Girls Empowerment & Personal Development for Young Girls here in Nain from August 12-16, 2019.

This will be for girls aged 13-18 from the communities of HVGB, NWR, Nain, Rigolet, Makkovik, Postville, Hopedale Nain and 1 person from the Canadian Constituency.

The intent of the program is to educate and promote healthy lifestyles through informal discussions and interactions that will empower young girls with confidence, pride and self-esteem throughout Inuit traditions and cultural practices.

Door prizes will be drawn for the purpose to encourage, promote, empower, educate and engage all young girls.

Master Apprentice Inuttitut Program

The Dept. of Culture, Recreation, & Tourism is offering a Master-Apprentice Program for ONE fluent speaker and ONE apprentice, each from Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville & Rigolet.

Shirley Jararuse is the Language Program Coordinator for Nunatsiavut Government.

She says the goal is to have a non-fluent speaker learn Inuttitut from a Master.
You will engage in daily activities with each other from Monday-Friday for 10-20 hours/ week for 6 months.

If you feel that you will be fully committed to this program and is eager to learn or teach Inuttitut,

Nain man charged for impaired driving while on a stolen ATV

On July 31, 2019 at approximately 6:30 p.m., Nain RCMP received a report of a stolen all-terrain vehicle (ATV) that occurred sometime overnight.

Police conducted patrols through the community and located a man driving the ATV in the community.

A traffic stop was conducted and the driver, 34-year-old David J. Tuglavina, was arrested for being in possession of stolen property. In addition, he was found to be impaired by alcohol and in breach of his probation order for consuming alcohol.

Tuglavina was held in custody and attends court yesterday. He has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5000, impaired operation, and breach of probation.

Okak Archeology (Audio)

There was a presentation held here in Nain on some archeology work at Okak on the evening of July 24, 2019.

Peter Whitridge is a professor in the department of Archeology at Memorial University.

He also says he directed a small field crew who did some environmental sampling and some drone mapping in the Okak area.

He says at his presentation, although there weren’t very many people who attended went very well and had great questions.

Gas, Diesel Up, Propane Down Slightly

The officially regulated price of fuel is up almost across the board today, and gas is slightly higher than predicted by the Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices yesterday.

Gas increases by over 2 1/2 cents per litre, while diesel is up over a cent.

Furnace and stove oil are up over one cent, while residential propane saw the only decrease with half a cent.
