Rigolet Salmon Festival

The 22nd Annual Salmon Festival began today August 7th until the 10th in Rigolet.

Today started at 1pm for Senior’s and Friends they have a 120 card game for ages 19+ with an admission fee of $5.

At 6pm they will have a Salmon Festival Parade with a Float Competition, with prizes for the most creative, most Enthusiastic, and the most original to the Salmon Theme.

Opening ceremonies will be located at the Community Hall following the parade.

The King and Queen, and Prince and Princess will be crowned followed by a meat and cake walk along with finger foods.

9:30pm there will be a Fireworks show located at the community dock.

Tomorrow the Festival with begin with a few games such as Booth Games, Face Painting, Puck Shot and Axe Throwing.

Hebron Selection Committee

The Archeology Department is ready for their trip for Hebron for the summer.

Michelle Davies is the Archeologist Assistant with the Nunatsiavut Government.

On Wednesday, July 31, the Hebron Selection Committee reviewed all applications for the Hebron Family Archaeology project and voted on participants.

Davies is happy to announce that they have selected Andrew Piercy and Wayne Piercy from Hopedale to participate in the project this year.

Great big thanks to the selection committee and to everyone who submitted their name for consideration.

They will travel to Hebron from August 14 to the 21st and present their results to the communities when they return.

Makkovik Trout Festival Day 2

Today marks Day 2 of the Trout Festival in Makkovik.

The events started off at 9am this morning with a Clean Energy Fair with the Kindergarten to Grade 6 at the Multi-purpose room.

A Family Sand Sculpture contest was held at 12pm at the Ranger Bight.

And at 4pm will be a community barbeque at the museum grounds followed by a Chain’s Quest for ages 8-13 and 14 and up at 4:30.

This quest will also take place at the Museum grounds with teams of two on pedal bikes for ages 8-13 and 14 and up.

There will be a Zombie Chase for all ages at 7:30pm this evening and everyone is asked to meet at the Town Office.

To participate in the Zombie Chase you must wear black/white clothing.

And at 9pm, there will be a Crib Tournament for ages 19 and up.

This tournament will consist with teams of two, free registration with a prize of $200 for first place.

Rigolet Salmon Festival

The Salmon Festival in Rigolet kicks off tomorrow for three days.

This year the Salmon Festival begins from August 7 to August 10, 2019.

They start off with a senior’s and Friends 120 Card Game that starts at 1pm for adults 19 years and up; with a $5 admission fee.

And the following evening; the Salmon Festival Parade begins at 6pm with a Float Competition.

Prizes will be won for the most creative, most enthusiastic, and most original to the Salmon theme.

Following by the parade will be the opening ceremonies at the Community Hall.

The King and Queen, Prince and Princess will be crowned followed by a meat/cake walk and finger foods will be provided.

And lastly, at 9:30pm there will be fireworks at the dock.

Expression of Interest

The Division of Tourism with the Nunatsiavut Government are looking for speed boat charters from Nain to Hebron this summer with camp supplies and at times Nunatsiavut staff during the weeks of, August 12, 19, and the 26, 2019.

Jillian Larkham is the Director of Tourism with the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says if people are interested in applying, it is very important that they provide details on what they are looking for.

In the application, they are asking interested beneficiaries to submit the following:

• The size of their boat and motor
• Safety equipment such as GPS, Sat Phone, Life Jackets, etc.
• Your knowledge and experience of travelling to Hebron as well as expertise in navigating and living off the land
• If you will have an assistant or laborer with you, their name and knowledge of the land
• Your full name and best way to contact you if you are a successful candidate

The Nunatsiavut Government will pay the following per trip from Nain to Hebron:

• $250 per one way trip, and gas and lube is provided
• $250 for Boat Rental
• $75 for the Assistant/Laborer

Wellness and Healing Programs Update

The Department of Health and Social Development in Nain are busy planning different Programs for the remainder of the summer.

Elsie Russell is the Mental Health and Addictions Councillor.

She says every Thursdays they hold the Power Hour walk, this event takes place every dinner hour from 12-1pm and they begin their walks at 12:30 inside the gym then have a healthy dinner lunch.

They provide water bottles to the new people who attend, and hands out T-shirt’s to those who attend 10 sessions and for those who attend a full year they get a camouflage hoody and it has “Power Hour” printed on it, also translated to “PISUKATIGENNIK SITONDIMI”.

Every Wednesday they hold parenting programs and which started on July 17, 2019; this program starts from 6-8PM located at the DHSD building.

From 8-9:30pm that evening, every second week they hold a support group for parents with children in care. They have snacks and gather around on a round table and talk about struggles.

Starting Mondays they will be holding Coping Skills for people with anxiety from 3pm, with Peter Pike and Elsie Russell.

Russell adds that they will soon have a Paint Night on a Monday so keep an eye out for this.

Today marks the 29th Annual Trout Festival in Makkovik.

The festival started at 9:30am this morning with a raft race for children ages 7-14 and 15 and up this was located at the Ranger Bight.

And older youth will have the opportunity to ride the Water Mania from 11am to 2pm for youth ages 7, 8-11 and youth ages 12-14.

The Trout Festival Parade will take place this evening at 6:30pm.

With prizes to be awarded for the best decorated bike, truck, ATV, and stroller followed by a Trivia Night at 7:30 for ages 16 and up.

And at 10:30 pm there will be a planned Fireworks located at Hebron.

Nain Fish Plant

The Nain fish plant is in operation since July 2, 2019.

John Ikkusek is the Fish Plant Manager for the Nain Fish Plant.

So far they have 3 fishermen and they have landed 9700 lbs of fish to this date.

They have Char, Shrimp, Cod Fillets, Crab Legs, Crab Claws, and Smoked Fish.

Ikkusek adds that they still need more fishermen.

No Internet and Long Distance in Nain

Residents of Nain are experiencing the third day of having no internet and long distance access.

On Saturday evening August 3rd, residence had no access to both internet and long distance access.

A Trout Festival Parade will take place at 6:30pm with prizes to be awarded for the best decorated bike, truck, ATV, and stroller followed by a Trivia Night at 7:30 for ages 16 and up.

And at 10:30 will be Fireworks at Hebron.
