Canadian Armed Forces Assistance Added to Ongoing Recovery Efforts in Labrador Plane Crash

The federal government will be sending in assistance in the ongoing effort to recover the victims of an Air Saguenay aircraft that crashed in Labrador two weeks ago.

Four of the seven people on board – including the two Newfoundlanders – have been recovered.

The Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Ralph Goodale, says they have accepted a request from the provincial government for help.

The Canadian Armed Forces will send in equipment and personnel to help recover remains and other items from Mistastin Lake.

A spokesperson for the Department of National Defence says the recovery effort is still being led by the RCMP, but the Armed Forces’ underwater search team has some unique capabilities to lend to the effort.

The Joint Task Force Atlantic will begin the underwater search this week.

The DND says six members of its Fleet Diving Unit will be sent from Halifax with special equipment to help find items under water consistent with the depths of Mistastin Lake.)

English River Fish Count

The English River fish count in Postville has started their operations.

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable Resources with the Nunatsiavut Government.

He says the counting fence was delayed with installing the vents because the river level was quite high, and they had to wait until the water level to drop to put the fence in.

But on July 15 the counting fence was installed at the English River Fish count.

Broomfield says normally they would be operating the fence in the first week of July but due to the ongoing rain and with the spring, the snow run off and the snow and rain combined are keeping the water level high in the river.

He says they have 6 crew members employed at the 15 minute boat ride which is east of Postville.

The English River Fish Count is in operated 7 days a week for 17 weeks.

Broomfield says the latest information they received was from yesterday July 28, 2019.

They counted 10 small salmon, 2 large salmon, 5 small char, 42 large char and 1 Brooke trout.

The char is returning to the rivers, basically every fish that enters the trap at the counting fence is counted by crew and released to the river.

The English fish count now has been in operation now since 1999.
