OkKak 100 Year Commemorations

This year marks the 100th year since the Spanish Flu epidemic in OkKak.

Brenda Jararuse is the Director of Culture at Nunatsiavut Government.

She says that this event will be held to celebrate and pay respect to the community and the descendants of OkKak.

Jararuse adds that there are applications available to attend the event in September.

10 day Moose hide workshop (Audio)

A 10 day Moose hide workshop took place last weekend near Nain.

Leaders from the Dene Nahjo organization came together in partnership with the Nunatsiavut Government to hold this workshop to beneficiaries.

Brianna Brown was the Moose Hide Workshop Coordinator and Melaw Nakeh’ko one of the founding members of the Dene Nahjo.

This was an experience of a lifetime, to engage in learning how to clean and tan moose hide.

Participants had the opportunity to experience cultural exchange between two indigenous cultures.

Alumni Sports meet

There will be an Alumni Sports meet going on from October 9 to October 14, 2019 here in Nain at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

This event will bring together former athletes ages 35 years and up.

The objectives for the Alumni Sports meet are to provide opportunities to remain active and competitive, promote cultural pride through sporting competition and to dispel age related stereotypes.

To be a part of this event, you must have competed in at least one sports meet in the past.

Athletes have the choice to try out for the team they previously were a part of or for the community that they recently live in.

Teams will consist of 12 athletes; six males and six females and will consist of four athletes between the ages of 35-45 and two athletes that are 46 and up.

Travel will be covered for Nunatsiavut athletes from each community to Nain and return.

Sports will consist of volleyball, archery, table tennis, cross country running, 100-meter relay, 50-meter dash, standing long jump, high jump, ball throw, and Inuit games.

Coordinators have been selected in each community and will soon advertise try outs.

The community coordinators are Julie Dicker from Nain, Danielle Pottle from Hopedale, Kayla Andersen from Postville, Paul Andersen from Makkovik, Jeffrey Piwas from Natuashish, and Pam Campbell and Charlene Palliser from Rigolet.

19th Annual Fun In the Sun Festival Day 4

Today marks Day 4 of the 19th Annual Fun in the Sun Festival for the town of Postville.

Day 4 starts at 6pm with a Community Walk on the Boardwalk. There will be a Nature Scavenger Hunt on the way to the Sandy Point.

There will also be a sand sculpture contest, and a fishing contest along with a prize of the biggest and smallest fish.

Saturday marks Day 5 and also is the last day for the Fun in the Sun Festival.

Starting at 11am they will have Bouncy Castle, Face Painting, Rock Painting, Water war, and for ages 14+ a Swimming Replay so you must bring a life jacket.

At 4:30pm they will have a Potluck and Prize draws for a Fun in the Sun Theme Contests of;

Best dressed for 1 adult and 1 child with a prize of $25 each.
Best punch with a prize of $30.
Best dessert of a prize of $40.

To end off the festival at 10pm they will have a Block party, along with food and beverages to be sold.

2019 North West Beach Festival kicks of tomorrow (Audio)

The North West River Beach Festival was established in 1986.

Since then, it has evolved not only into Labrador’s largest outdoor music festival, but a great Labrador tradition.

This year, the Beach Festival is being held Tomorrow, July 27th and Sunday, July 28th.

The Festival will take place at the Lester Burry Memorial Park.

People can relax and enjoy 20 or more hours of nonstop live entertainment by local and regional performers.

Entertainment begins at 11 am each morning, and runs until late into each night.

Services available for the festival include free admission both days, free parking & nightly dancing outdoors.

4th body of plane crash found

Yesterday afternoon, the body of the fourth victim of the plane crash in Mistastin Lake, Labrador, was recovered by the RCMP.

The body is being sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Once identification has been confirmed, the family of the deceased will be notified.

Of the seven occupants on the plane, four bodies have been recovered.

Search efforts continue today for the remaining three occupants.

Moosehide workshop

The Nunatsiavut Government and the Denne Nawaoi organization came together to hold the very first Moose hide workshop.

The Moose hide workshop was held at Joey Angnatok’s cabin which is a half hour away from Nain.

This 10 day moose hide workshop was a huge success, with over 30 participants.

OKâlaKatiget Radio and the TV department had the opportunity to attend to the workshop to conduct some interviews.

Simeonie Merkuratsuk was one of the bear guards, he had the opportunity to take part in the moose hide workshop.

19th Annual Fun in the Sun Festival Day 3

The 19th annual Fun in the Sun Festival marks Day 3 today in Postville and runs until Saturday July 27, 2019.

Today, Thursday July 25, located at the Community Centre they had a BBQ sponsored by Vale during dinner hour.

4:30pm there will be a Teddy Bear Picnic at the Gazebo sponsored by the Sheppard’s Variety. Be sure to bring your most favorite bear.

From 6:30-7pm there will be an 80’s Theme Dance, located at the Community Centre.

For ages 4 and under it will be from 6:30-7pm, and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

7-8pm will be for ages 5-7 years old, and for ages 8-12 years old it will be from 8-9pm.

At 7pm there will also be a Merchandise Radio Bingo, and cards will be sold from 2pm-3:30pm.

Friday’s events will start off with a Walk on the Boardwalk.

Nain Fish Plant

The Nain fish plant is in operation since July 2nd, 2019.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Office Supervisor for the Fish Plant.

She say’s the Nain Plant now has Crab Legs, Crab Claws, Shrimp, and Cod Fillets for sale.

For 2 pounds of Crab Legs it cost $22, for Crab Claws for 1 pound a pack is $10, 1 pound pack of Shrimp cost $10, and for Cod Fillets for 5 pounds a box cost $35.

So far they have 4 fishermen and right now the amount of fish landed so far is 3646 pounds.

Nain Music Festival

The Nain Recreation Department is planning a Music festival this August.

And they are holding a name contest to name this Music Festival.

Lisa Ivany is the Recreation Director with the Nain Inuit Community Government.

She says they are still in the planning process but the date is set for August 24 & 25, 2019.

You can submit your entries by email to recreationnain@nf.aibn.com.

Deadline to submit your submission for the name contest is July 29.

Ivany says the winner will be announced on July 30, with a great prize to be awarded to the winner.

The Recreation Department are looking for any local performers to perform.

And confirmed artists who will perform during the festival this year is David Heart, The Beardos and Saali Keelan.

She says some funding came from the Ullapitsaijet Steering Committee.
