Air Borealis Community Meetings/Photo Contest

Air Borealis will be doing community visits during the week of January 13th to the 16th, visiting all the communities in Nunatsiavut including Natuashish.

The first meeting was held in Hopedale yesterday and will be here in Nain today, Tuesday, January 14th at 7 pm at the Illusuak Building.

They will be in Natuashish on Wednesday January 15th at 10 am at the Band Council Office, and will then be traveling on the same day to Makkovik, holding their meeting at 12 Noon at the Community Centre.

Then again, on the same day on Wednesday, January 15th, they will also be in Rigolet at the Seniors Social Centre and will finally make their way to Postville on January 16th and will hold their meeting at the Recreation Center at 11 am.

During the meeting, their representatives of Air Borealis will give an overview of the 2019 year and will talk about what plans they have for 2020.

There will be time for a general discussion about matters of interest to customers of the airline and will have ample time for Questions and Answers during each meeting.

The Air Borealis is also holding a photo contest where at the end of each session, a draw will be made for a Return Ticket on Air Borealis.

This contest is titled “The view at home!” where you tell them your story of Labrador through pictures from January 6th to February 29th, 2020 and will have a chance to win one of 2 round trips for two anywhere Air Borealis flies.

To enter, you must choose a photo of Labrador taken by you in the last 12 months with your story and send it to photo@airborealis.ca

Entries must have your full name, phone number and a short description of the photo.

Winners will be selected by a panel of judges prior to March 8th, 2020 and be notified by email or telephone and announced on Air Borealis’ website.

Nigivik Schedule

The Nigivik Centre posted their schedule for activities for January.

And here are the weekly events for the Nigivik’s scheduled activities for January 13th to the 17th.

For today, Tuesday, January 14th, started at 1 pm, they are having a Everyone Day making Stuffed Peppers until 4 pm.

Wednesday will be a Kids Day Suggestions, making Homemade Hamburgers from 3:15 to 4:15 pm.

On Thursday, January 16th, the Nigivik Centre will have a Senior’s Day and will be making homemade bread from 9 am to 4 pm.

And on Friday, they will be holding a Family Cooking making Crispy Oven Fried Fish from 2 to 4 pm.

The OK Society will have more of the activities for the week of January 20th, 2020.

School Pictures for JHMS

We’ve spoken with the principal for the Jens Haven Memorial School here in Nain about the school pictures.

Jacob Larkin is the Principal for JHMS.

Larkin says the deadline to make an order is January 23rd, 2020.

To make your order you can go to the school and fill out a form or you can order online.

If you would like to drop it off to the school with the money, they will mail it to them and will then get the pictures at the school when it arrives.

To order online, you can go to their website at www.heirloomportraits.ca.

Larkin says for the graduation pictures for the kindergarten and Grade 12 classes, they will be coming late January or mid February.

He also adds that the three jobs are still available for an Inuktitut teacher, an Illusivut teacher and a custodian.

There is no deadline and will be open until the jobs are filled.

Young People’s Day in Hopedale

This is Augusta Tuglavina’s 4th year volunteering preparing for their Young People’s Day in Hopedale.

She says she got the CYN and REC to book the Nanuk Centre for January 25th.

The DHSD will be providing meals for breakfast, dinner and supper and will be writing a letter to kamatsiatit for more donations.

Tuglavina says she has 4 people willing to help either cook something or help at the Nanuk Centre.

The activities for the Young People’s Day include sports such as table tennis, darts, cards or watching movies.

Tuglavina says she got about 12 people to celebrate their day so far and will be putting up more signs at the school, stores and post office to get more people join.

So, any boys or girls ages 13 and up that wants to have their day can message her through Facebook.

Anyone willing to help volunteer can let her know as she may need helpers to cook.

Make it a special day for our Young People to enjoy themselves.

Night Classes (Audio)

The Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism will be holding Inuktitut evening classes in Nain only.

Shirley Jararuse is the Language Program Coordinator for Nunatsiavut government.

She says this is a pilot project for now and will start on Thursday, January 23rd, 2020.

Kamutik Making Program for Hopedale

Under Hopedale DHSD, the Youth Outreach Worker and Shed Co-ordinator are partnering up to provide Kamutik making program for youth and adults.

They would like to have 4 youth ages 12-18 and 4 adults ages 19 and up.

They are looking to get started on Thursday, January 16th, with sessions from 6-8:30 pm.

If there are more than 8 participants, they will start a waiting list.

Family Literacy Day

We contacted the Nain, Hopedale and Rigolet schools to get information on Family Literacy Day.

Jacob Larkin is the Principal for Jens Haven Memorial School here in Nain.

Larkin says the Family Literacy Day will be on January 27th in the school library around 10:20 am.

We contacted one of the teachers in the Northern Lights Academy School in Rigolet.

She says their school will have their Family Literacy Day on January 27th for the Kindergarten and the Grade One class from 1 pm-3 pm.

She also says the theme will be “Hibernate with a Good Book”.

Each student can bring a parent and can wear their pajamas.

There will be books, games and snacks.

Dean Coombs is the principal for the Amos Comenius Memorial School in Hopedale.

He says there will be a Family Night where parents and students could read to each other and play with some clay.

This will be on January 29th starting at 6 pm at the school.

The ACMS will send a memo around town for more details about Family Literacy Day.

OK Radio will have more information on the Family Literacy Day for the other communities once it becomes available.

TV Producer Ad

The OKâlaKatiget Society has a job opening for a Television Producer.

This position is a full time permanent position.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Identifying story ideas and conducting research
• Operating camera, lighting and audio equipment
• Planning and conducting interviews and sources
• Outlining and writing scripts for editing
• Transcribing
• Digitally editing film on Avid software

The closing date is Wednesday, January 15th, and resumes should be forwarded before 4 pm.

Preferences will be given to Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

Applicants are preferred to be bilingual in Inuktitut and English as well.
