Inuit Program in St. John’s (Audio)

The First Light Friendship Centre in St. John’s has an Inuit program on the go.

Ashley Dicker is the Program Facilitator for the centre.

She says she got this program going because she wanted to be around Inuit.

Dicker says they get together on Thursday’s from 6-7:30 at the friendship centre.

Young Men’s Day Festival Update

The Young Men in Nain held their first Young Men’s Day meeting was held at the Fire Hall last evening.

Johnny Ikkusek is the Supervisor for the event.

The Young Men’s Festival Day is celebrated on January 25th, and this year it falls on a Saturday.

Ikkusek says 6 young boys attended the meeting, another meeting scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, at the Nain Fire Hall at 5 pm.

He says the Captains are Abele Ikkusek and Dennis Merkuratsuk.

Ikkusek says the fee for the first timers to have their day is $15 and the second timers, $25.

Right now they are looking for donations, a tree, table and chairs, helpers and cooks.

Ikkusek adds there are 9 eligible first timer boys who turned the age of 15 and can join the celebration this year.

So if anyone young men who would like to have their day on January 25th, they can attend the second meeting tomorrow Friday at the Nain Fire Hall at 5 pm.

OTT Program

The Women in Resource Development Corporation (WRDC) are currently accepting applications for the Orientation to Trades and Technology for women.

Judy Voisey is the Career and Employment Specialist for WRDC.

Applicants who apply for this training program will have hands on experience training in Trade fields.

Voisey says this program offers many hands on trades programs and a variety of academic courses, worksite tours and industry presentations.

The OTT Career Development program is a 16 week program funded by the Provincial Government offered to women.

Illusuak Hours

The Illusuak Centre in Nain is open to the public.

Nancy Winters is the Café Manager for the centre.

She says they are open from nine to four today and they will open from eight to four starting tomorrow.

Winters says they serve coffee and the Exhibit area is open for people to look around.

She says they are still looking for a cook for the café.

Winters adds once the cook is hired they will serve soup and sandwiches.

Family Literacy Day

Family Literacy Day is a National Awareness Initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and it is held annually on January 27.

Family Literacy Day is a day to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

On January 27th, 2020 will be the 21st Anniversary.

We spoke to a few schools along the coast to get information about the Family Literacy day in their communities.

Laura Dawn Angnatok is the principal for the Jens Haven Primary School in Nain.

Angnatok says the date is scheduled for January 27th at the school starting at 1:45 pm.

Teachers will hand out invitations to the children to give to parents.

Dion Rideout is the Principal for the J.C. Erhardt Memorial School in Makkovik.

Rideout says they will have their Family Literacy Day also on January 27th at the school from 1-3 pm.

They will be doing stations for each classroom and will have activities including crosswords, digital codes, puzzles, Inuktitut reading, and more.

The teachers will be also giving out invitations to the students as well.

Carmine Sheppard is the principal for B.L. Morrison in Postville.

Sheppard says due to not very many people showing up to the last Family Literacy Day, they are unaware whether to have it or not.

The OK Radio has been collecting stories from elders for many years about their memories from back in the day.

We spoke with Sophie (Jararuse) Keelan who is living in Northern Quebec, but is originally from Labrador.

She speaks about the days when she and her family had been relocated.

Nomination of Candidate for 2 Councillor Positions

Nominations of two candidates for the Inuit Community Government By-Election for the Municipality of Hopedale will be received between the hours of 9 am-4 pm from January 10th, 2020 to Friday, January 24th, 2020 at the Hopedale Inuit Community Government Office, with the exception of Saturday and Sunday.

The candidates shall be eligible to be enrolled on the A voters roll.
The A voters roll is comprised of Inuit, Residents and their Descendants.

Nominations shall be in writing and shall state the name and residence of the candidate and shall be signed by the Proposer and Seconder, both of whom shall be present together with the candidate, who shall also sign signifying his or her acceptance of the nomination.

The qualifications of a candidate for By-Election for the Inuit Community Council are as follows:

1. Eligible to be enrolled on the A voters rolls in a By-Election in the community in which he or she is nominated to serve as a Councillor.

2. Canadian citizen of the full age of 19 years.

3. Ordinarily resident in the community of area for at least 600 days or more prior to the date set for the nomination.

The Advance Poll, if required, will take place on January 31st, 2020.

Bantams Minor Hockey Tournament to HVGB

The 16th Annual Lake Melville Extreme Mega Tournament will take place in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

William Flowers is the Director of Minor Hockey with the Nain Recreation Department.

He says the Torngat Mountains Bantam Team will be participating in this tournament and are leaving tomorrow, January 16th, 2020.

He would like to thank NICG for their continued funding and support to our Torngat Minor Hockey teams that get to travel and represent Nain each and every year and the Nunatsiavut Group of Companies for helping to fund our team for this tournament.

Thank you to our Recreation Director Lisa Ivany for registering the team, booking our charter and helping in any and every way possible to get our team to Goose Bay, and our NICG staff for making sure we have everything our team and coaches need.

Our Bantam team will leave for Goose Bay on Thursday, January 16th and their flight leaves 11:45 am.

If you are in the Goose Bay area, come down to the arena and cheer for our Torngat Mountains Bantam team.

TV Producer Ad

The OKâlaKatiget Society has a job opening for a Television Producer.

This position is a full time permanent position.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Identifying story ideas and conducting research
• Operating camera, lighting and audio equipment
• Planning and conducting interviews and sources
• Outlining and writing scripts for editing
• Transcribing
• Digitally editing film on Avid software

The closing date is today, Wednesday, January 15th, and resumes should be forwarded before 4 pm.

Preferences will be given to Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

Applicants are preferred to be bilingual in Inuktitut and English as well.

Lela Evans Part 1 (Audio)

Lela Evans was elected into the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly in the 2019 provincial election.

She represents the electoral district of Torngat Mountains as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of NL.

We spoke with Evans to find out what issues she is dealing with and what she hopes to see happen in the New Year.

Evans is quite busy with ongoing issues such as transportation.
