TV Producer Ad Extended Deadline

The OKâlaKatiget Society has a job opening for a Television Producer.

This position is a full time permanent position.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Identifying story ideas and conducting research
• Operating camera, lighting and audio equipment
• Planning and conducting interviews and sources
• Outlining and writing scripts for editing
• Transcribing
• Digitally editing film on Avid software

The closing date is extended to, Wednesday, January 29th and resumes should be forwarded before 4 pm.

Preferences will be given to Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

Applicants are preferred to be bilingual in Inuktitut and English as well.

Carl Sheppard Memorial Ball Hockey Tournament

This year marks the 15th Annual Carl Sheppard Memorial Ball Hockey Tournament in Postville.

We spoke with Jacqueline Harris who is the Acting Recreation Director for the Postville Inuit Community Government.

She says the tournament will take place at the B.L. Morrison School gym starting on March 13th at 6 pm.

The fee for each player is $10 and must consist of 6 players with 2 females a team, not including the goalie.

The OK Society will provide more information on the tournament once it becomes available.

7 plex Apartment Deadline

The Nunatsiavut Government have been accepting applications for the 7plex in Nain.

The application deadline is this Wednesday, January 22nd, 2020.

The purpose of the program/housing units is to provide housing to Nain families that are experiencing family violence or that are at risk of having one or more children taken into care of CSSD or that have had a child taken into the care of CSSD in circumstances where access to appropriate family housing would be one of the supports necessary or helpful in preventing family violence, avoiding CSSD intervention, preventing children being taken into care of CSSD or maintaining or restoring the integrity and health of the family.

5th Annual Nain Wing Bee Turnout (Audio)

Last week was the 5th Annual Wing Bee here in Nain.

Regina Wells is with the Canadian Wildlife Service with the Environment Canada.

She says she’s been doing migratory field work here in Nain for the last 12 years and started the Wing Bee in the last 5 years.

We also had Carla Pamak and Chaim Andersen participate in this interview on their thoughts about the workshop.

They say that the Wing Bee is a lot of fun and interesting, and encourages more people to participate.

Young Mens Day Festival

Just 5 days left for the Young Men’s Day Festival to be celebrated in Nain.

We spoke with Johnny Ikkusek who is the Supervisor for the festival this year.

He says they had 11 young men attend their second meeting last Friday; January 17th.

Ikkusek says the pijet for this year are Matt Barbour and Boas Fox, and the cook is Miriam Lidd, and Rosina Brown will assist with any baked goods for the festival.

Another Young Men’s Day meeting is scheduled for today at 5 pm at the Nain Fire Hall.

Ikkusek says they have handed out letters to organizations for donations and are still waiting to hear back.

But right now, here is a list of what the young men received from numerous donations within the community:

A $50 gift card donation from the Quick Stop Store, 3 loaves of bread and cereal and milk from the Atsanik Inn, a ham from the Hayne’s General Store, and the Nain DHSD donated milk, tissue, sugar, coffee mate and 6 packs of coffee.

We will have more updates on the 2020 Young Men’s Day festival once it becomes available.

The Them Days Magazine in Happy Valley-Goose Bay is busy looking for stories.

Amy Chaulk is the Editor for Them Days Inc.

She says right now, they are working on an issue about Labrador veterans.

Chaulk says she’s been gathering stories from different families.

The Brinex Road Bridges Repair

The Postville Inuit Community Government is inviting everyone to help repair the two bridges on Brinex Road.

We’ve spoke with Shirley Goudie who is the Town Manager with the Postville ICG.

Goudie says they will start tomorrow morning, January 18th, 2020 at 9 am, meeting at Brinex Road.

The materials are provided to help repair the bridges.

There will be prizes drawn and the prizes are one drum of gas and one in each that was donated from around town.

Goudie adds that the brooks are bad, so anyone wanting to come out and volunteer to keep the bridges safe can meet at the Brinex Road.

Inuktitut Speak-Off Postponed

The Inuktitut Speak-Off that was supposed to be held here in Nain is postponed until next month.

Christine Nochasak is the Inuk Program Specialist.

She says the Inuktitut Speak-Off is postponed because some of the students couldn’t make it and she did not want to leave anyone out.

Nochasak adds that when she gets a call from the Happy Valley-Goose Bay office, she will let everyone know when the Inuktitut speak-off will be.

Makkovik ICG Plans For This Year

The Makkovik Inuit Community Government has some plans for 2020.

We spoke with the AngajukKâk, Barry Andersen.

He says they are in process for a new housing sub division for 20 new houses and are getting ready to send it to tender later on this winter for a contract.

The arena is now in operation with hockey and ice rental.

Andersen says that they are getting ready to hire people for the groom trail to make a trail from Makkovik to Separation Lake, which is half way to Goose Bay.

He would also notify the public that they are in process of looking to hire a Community Administrative Officer and has a new Recreation Director in training, Corey Pottle.

Other than that, Andersen says that they got regular operations going on such as collecting garbage and thawing out freezing pipes.

LATP Update (Audio)

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership (LATP) will be traveling to Hopedale next week to recruit for upcoming training program they are offering.

LATP held community consultation meetings before Christmas and did not have the chance to hold one in Hopedale before the New Year.

Keith Jacque is the Executive Director with LATP.

He says they have a couple Camp Attendant training coming up.

The first training will be held in Hopedale beginning on January 27th, 2020 and the next training will be held in Nain, on February 17th, 2020.

They are also offering a new 3 week Underground Diamond Driller Program in Sudbury next month in February.
