Family Literacy Day

Family Literacy Day is a National Awareness Initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and it is held annually on January 27.

Family Literacy Day is a day to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

On January 27th, 2020 will be the 21st Anniversary.

We spoke to a few schools along the coast to get information about the Family Literacy day in their communities.

Laura Dawn Angnatok is the principal for the Jens Haven Primary School in Nain.

Angnatok says the date is scheduled for January 27th at the school starting at 1:45 pm.

Teachers will hand out invitations to the children to give to parents.

Dion Rideout is the Principal for the J.C. Erhardt Memorial School in Makkovik.

Rideout says they will have their Family Literacy Day also on January 27th at the school from 1-3 pm.

They will be doing stations for each classroom and will have activities including crosswords, digital codes, puzzles, Inuktitut reading, and more.

The teachers will be also giving out invitations to the students as well.

Carmine Sheppard is the principal for B.L. Morrison in Postville.

Sheppard says due to not very many people showing up to the last Family Literacy Day, they are unaware whether to have it or not.
