Nain Fish Plant Update

The Nain fish plant started processing char last week and is now smoking the char.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Office Supervisor for the Nain fish plant.

She says there are 26 employees working and there are 10 fishermen fishing.

Kohlmeister says 10,000 lbs of char has been landed to date.

She adds there are smoked char, crab legs, fillets and whole char to sell if anyone is interested.

CFIA Issues Recall on Several Products Due To Potential Salmonella

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is recalling a number of products due to potential Salmonella contamination.

A recall is in effect for Christie brand Ritz Bits cheese and pizza flavoured sandwich crackers.

The expiry dates include November 24 and 29, 2018 and January 23 and 24, 2019. The crackers were sold country-wide.

Loblaw is recalling certain No Name chicken nuggets and $10 Chicken Fries from stores due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Mars Food Canada has also pulled two varieties of Uncle Ben’s Fast & Fancy Rice.

The company says the recall affects its Broccoli and Cheddar, and Country Chicken flavours sold in eastern Canada.

Anyone who purchased any of the listed products should throw them out or return them to the store where they were bought.

18th Annual Fun in the Sun Festival (Audio)

The 18th Annual fun in the sun festival is starting in Postville tomorrow, July 24, 2018.

James Jacque is the Recreation Director Assistant.

He says Fun in the sun festival is Postville’s equivalent to things like the trout festival and the rhubarb festival.

Jacque added that they have a bunch of activities for the whole community to come out and enjoy.

Nunatsiavut Field Guide to the Birds

Michelle Saunders and Ian Jones are headed to your community to get your input about their project.

Project through Tradition and Transition the “Nunatsiavut Field Guide to the Birds of Labrador.”

The meeting is scheduled for Friday, July 20, from 6-8pm, and will be held in the Nunatsiavut Government boardroom.

Light refreshments will be provided and you can enter a draw for your chance to win 1 of 2 $200 flight vouchers (donated by PAL Airlines).

Application available for 7plex in Hopedale

The Nunatsiavut Government 7plex Housing Units will be ready for occupancy soon.

The application forms are available as of today and may be picked up at the NG office, DHSD Office or Hopedale Inuit Community Government office. The deadline for applications is August 3, 2018.

The units are designated for families who are at risk of having their children go into care or potentially could have their children returned to their care with appropriate housing and supports.

The families must be open to working with the Family Connections Program and be agreeable to the rules in place such as no alcohol/illicit drug use in units, only individuals listed on the rental agreement permitted to reside in the home, etc…

NG looking for stories in Inuktitut (Audio)

Shirley Jararuse recently started working with the Nunatsiavut Government as a maternity leave replacement as the Language Program Coordinator.

She is looking for stories in Inuktitut for Okalakatiget Society’s IlinniaKatigennik Radio Hour.

Jararuse says that she will compensate for your time and the set rate is $25 per hour.

Gas Prices Gone Down

The regulated price of gas is down today by 2.2 cents per litre this week.

Diesel is down by 2.7, while furnace and stove oil is down by 2.3.

Propane, however, is up by a penny.

Community Meetings with the Maritime Search and Rescue Program

The vision of the Imappivut Marine Management plan is to fully implement the Labrador Inuit Land claims Agreement in the entire coastal and marine waters of Nunatsiavut and guarantee that for generations to come, these waters support a healthy marine ecosystem and prosperous Labrador Inuit.

In support of Imappivut Marine Management Plan and the Federal Oceans Protection Plan, the Nunatsiavut Government is working with the Government of Canada on Marine protection and safety initiatives.

Input from maritime users is critical to this process.

The CCG would like to meet with community members and organizations to discuss maritime activities on the Labrador Coast.

In Postville, tomorrow, July 19, 2018 at the Community center at 10:30am and in Makkovik at the Community Hall at 7pm.

In Rigolet, on July 20, 2018 at the Community Hall at 2pm.

13th Annual Rhubarb Festival 2018 Day 3

Today is Day three of the 13th Annual Rhubarb Festival in Hopedale.

The events started off with a Toddler Social at 1:30 in the Nanuk Centre.

At 4:30 there will be a Vale BBQ also at the Nanuk Centre and then at 6pm there will be Minute to win it.

Tomorrow’s events will be Teen and Adult Fear Factor and a Giant Radio Bingo.

OK Radio will have more of the events of the Rhubarb Festival tomorrow.

Nigivik Centre Busy with Cooking Programs (Audio)

The Nigivik Centre has been open in Nain for a few months now.

Shelley Dicker is the Community Food Coordinator for the Nigivik Centre.

On Mondays, Dicker plans what she’ll offer throughout the week and gets purchase orders ready for the programs.

Tuesdays are cooking classes for adults.

They learn to make things such as homemade bread or something they have never made before.

Wednesdays in the afternoon is cooking classes for youth.

Dicker adds she has a lot planned for the future of the Nigivik Centre.
