Heritage Forum (Audio-Inuktitut Only)

The 9th Annual Heritage Forum took place in Hopedale from June 25 to 28, 2018.

Joan Dicker was a delegate representing Nain, and Fran Williams, an Elder representing Nain and Hopedale at the Heritage Forum.

Dicker also gave Inuktitut lessons each day of the Forum.

There were a lot issues discussed throughout the forum.

Such as: relocation, culture, arts, tradition and transition projects, etc.

Gas Prices Predicted to Drop This Week

It might be best to hold off filling up your gas tanks until tomorrow.

According to the Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices, there’s going to be a drop at the pumps come tomorrow.

Gas is set to drop by 1.4 cents according to spokesperson George Murphy while diesel shows a drop of 2.7 cents a litre.

Heating and stove oil will go down by about 2.5 cents per litre.

13th Annual Rhubarb Festival 2018 Day 2

The 13th Annual Rhubarb Festival in Hopedale is started yesterday with plans for a fun-filled week.

Today’s events started off with Seniors Luncheon that is sponsored by DHSD at the Nanuk Centre.

At 4:30 there will be a Mini Fair/carnival/ Carnival and Rhubarb Bake-ff at the Nanuk centre.

Followed by that there will be a Cardboard Boat Race at 7pm.

Tomorrow the events artists off with a Toddler Social at 1:20 at the Nanuk Centre.

There will also be a VALE community BBQ and Minute to win it.

English River Fish Count (Audio)

The English River Fish count in Postville started off a little late this year.

Todd Broomfield is the Fisheries Specialist for Nunatsiavut Government.

Broomfield says they have 6 employees hired.

He adds that they will be working for a period of 17 weeks.

Broomfield hopes for good salmon numbers this year.

Community Meetings with the Maritime Search and Rescue Program

The vision of the Imappivut Marine Management plan is to fully implement the Labrador Inuit Land claims Agreement in the entire coastal and marine waters of Nunatsiavut and guarantee that for generations to come, these waters support a healthy marine ecosystem and prosperous Labrador Inuit.

In support of Imappivut Marine Management Plan and the Federal Oceans Protection Plan, the Nunatsiavut Government is working with the Government of Canada on Marine protection and safety initiatives.

Input from maritime users is critical to this process.

The CCG would like to meet with community members and organizations to discuss maritime activities on the Labrador Coast.

Meeting schedule as follows:

In Nain, tomorrow, July 18th at the NG Boardroom at 7pm.

In Postville, July 19, 2018 at the Community center at 10:30am and in Makkovik at the Community Hall at 7pm.

In Rigolet, on July 20, 2018 at the Community Hall at 2pm.

13th Annual Rhubarb Festival 2018 Starts Today

The 13th Annual Rhubarb Festival in Hopedale is starting today with plans for a fun-filled week.

The events start off today at 4:30pm at the Nanuk Centre with a fireman’s Challenge then a beauty Pageant at 6:30pm.

Tomorrow the events will start with a Seniors Luncheon that is sponsored by DHSD starting at 12 until 1pm at the Nanuk Centre.

There will also be a Fair/Carnival and Rhubarb Bake-off and Cardboard Boat race.

Labrador Aboriginal Training Program (Audio)

Courses are going well at the Labrador Aboriginal Training Program in Goose Bay.

Keith Jacque is the Executive Director of LATP.

He says the training course’s included: underground mining, heavy equipment technicians and operators, from electrical to carpentry and construction.

Jacque says they are also accepting applications from students to attend school in the fall.

He says 10 individuals were sent to Sudbury, Ontario to take training in underground mining and it was a success each individual.

CBC Replacing Antennas at Transmitter Site

CBC will be replacing Antennas on the Tower at the Transmitter Site in Happy Valley Goose Bay.

This work will start today July 16th and will continue for approximately a week.

The CBC and the OK Society Transmitters will be turned off periodically for safety reasons when workers are on the tower.

OK Radio will not be on air in the Upper Lake Melville area while the transmitters are turned off.

ULM listeners will still be about to listen via Web Radio at www.oksocietyradio.com.

OK Radio will have more information on the work that is being down on the transmitter site once it becomes available.

Facebook Canada Inuktitut Page (Audio)

Facebook Canada announced that it would be adding Inuktitut to its Translate Facebook app.

It’s a starting point on getting a fully operational version assuming that there is enough response from people who know the Language.

Johannes Lampe is the President of Nunatsiavut Government.

He says he is not a Facebook user, but believes Facebook efforts will, regardless be positive for the recognition of the Inuit Language and the people.
