Fun in the Sun Festival Day 2

Postville’s Fun in the Sun Festival started yesterday and runs until Saturday July 28, 2018.

Today’s events started with a Community breakfast that was sponsored by the Postville Inuit Community Government.

A family Digital Scavenger Hunt started at 1:30at the community centre.

There will be a Teddy Bear Picnic at the Gazebo which is sponsored by Sheppard’s Variety.

At 5:30 there will be a Community BBQ sponsored by VALE.

To end off today’s events, at 6:30 there will be a Children’s Bingo for ages 12 and under at the Community Centre.

Tomorrow the day will start with a Bike Race starting at 1:30.

Inuit Child Welfare Review Public Notice

The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate is completing an independent Review of the experiences of Inuit children and youth in the child protection system.

This is being completed at the request of the Nunatsiavut Government.

A number of programs of the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development will be explored where Inuit children receive services.

Gas Prices May Rise, But Only a Touch

Fuel prices could be going up but by very little this week, according to the Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices.

Spokesman George Murphy says gas and diesel both show an increase of 1/10th of a cent per litre, and heating and stove oils show a decrease of 6/10ths of a cent.

The margin of error is 3/10ths of a cent.

Heritage Forum (Audio-Inuktitut Only)

There was a Heritage Forum held in Hopedale last month on June25-29th, 2018.

Joan Dicker and Fran Williams were the participants.

Williams says there were about 40 participants from the north coast that attended that meeting.

Dicker says she used to teach Inuktitut words to the participants and they enjoyed it.

Announcement of Candidates for Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami Presidential Election

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami announced yesterday that there are three candidates for the organization’s upcoming presidential election.

The candidates, in alphabetical order, are:

Peter Ittinuar

Natan Obed

Peter Williamson

The election will take place on August 16, 2018, in Inuvik, Inuvialuit Settlement Region, following ITK’s annual general meeting, which begins on August 15.

ITK, formerly Inuit Tapirisat of Canada, is the national voice of 65,000 Inuit living across Canada and in communities throughout Nunavut, Nunavik, Nunatsiavut and the Inuvialuit Settlement Region of the Northwest Territories.

ITK’s vision is Canadian Inuit prospering through unity and self-determination.

CBC Completed Replacement of Antennas at Transmitter Site

Last week we were told from CBC that they were replacing antennas on the tower at the Transmitter Site in Happy Valley Goose Bay.

The work started July 16th and took about a week to complete.

The CBC and the OK Society Transmitters were turned off for safety reasons when workers were on the tower.

Now that the work is completed OK Radio would like to advise the listeners in the Upper Lake Melville area that we are now back on the air.

Coastal Community Freezer Update

The OKâlaKatiget Society contacted each of the North Coast Community Freezer’s to see what they have to offer in their community freezer.

In Rigolet, they have red berries, partridges and moose meat.

Postville’s freezer has char and cod fish.

And in Nain, the freezer has partridges.

OK Radio attempted to contacted Hopedale’s Community Freezer but no one was available at this time.

We will have more information on Hopedale’s Community Freezer once it becomes available.

Makkovik Fish Plant Update

Yesterday we got in contact with the Nain fish plant for an update on how the operations are going.

Today we spoke to Junior Andersen who is the Production Manager for Makkovik fish plant.

There are 50 employees working on crab and 5 crab boats fishing, two have finished up.

Andersen says 263,810 lbs of crab has been landed to date.

He adds that they need more fish plant workers for anyone who is interested in working; you can call 923-2230.

He also added that there is crab meat to sell if anyone is interested.

18th Annual Fun in the Sun Festival

The fun in the Sun Festival starts in Postville today and runs until Saturday July 28, 2018.

The festival starts with a Fun in the Sun Fair at the community Centre at 5:30 with a $1 admission.

At the fair there will be fish pond, Balloon Darts, Photo Booth, Face Painting and much more.

At 7:30 there will be a summer themed dance for ages 12 and under.

Tomorrow the events start at 7am with a community Breakfast sponsored by the PICG.

Application Forms Ready for Seven-plex in Hopedale (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Government’s seven-plex housing units in Hopedale will be ready for occupancy soon.

Michelle Kinney is the Deputy Minister of Health and Social Development for the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says that the application forms are available and may be picked up at the Nunatsiavut Government office, DHSD Office or Hopedale Inuit Community Government office.

Kinney added that the deadline for applications is August 3, 2018.
