Application available for 7plex in Hopedale

The Nunatsiavut Government 7plex Housing Units will be ready for occupancy soon.

The application forms are available as of today and may be picked up at the NG Office, DHSD Office or Hopedale Inuit Community Government Office. The deadline for applications is August 3, 2018.

The units are designated for families who are at risk of having their children go into care or potentially could have their children returned to their care with appropriate housing and supports.

The families must be open to working with the Family Connections Program and be agreeable to the rules in place such as no alcohol/illicit drug use in units, only individuals listed on the rental agreement permitted to reside in the home, etc…

Inuit Child Welfare Review

The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate is completing an independent Review of the experiences of Inuit children and youth in the child protection system.

This is being completed at the request of the Nunatsiavut Government. A number of programs of the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development will be explored where Inuit children receive services.

Community visits will occur in July and August to help you learn about how the Review will work, answer questions, and to see how you can be involved.

More community sessions will take place in September and October where you will be able to share your experiences as well as your ideas for the future.

If you would like to learn more about this Review, community information sessions will take place over the next two weeks:

Hopedale: today July 30 and tomorrow July 31.

There will be an Open House tonight at Assembly Building 7:00 pm-10:00 pm.

NWR Beach Festival (Audio)

The 33rd North West River Beach Festival went really well, even though there was a bit rain over the weekend.

Brenda Saunders is the one of the committee members.

She says there was a good turn out this year.

Saunders says the most exciting event for her was the silent auctions and crafts sales.

Youth Participants Wanted for Slipper Making, Inuit Drum Making and Traditional Baking Nights

Youth Participants wanted for Slipper making, Inuit drum making and Traditional Baking nights.

Mary Binky Andersen is the Youth Outreach worker for DHSD.

She is looking for eight youth for the slipper making which will start when spots are filled and she is also looking for an easy slipper pattern.

Four youth for the Inuit drum making that will be instructed by Simon Kohlmeister which will start next week.

And four participants for the traditional baking nights which will be instructed by Mary Andersen with Red berry.

Fun in the Sun Day 4

Postville’s Fun in the Sun Festival started on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 and runs until Saturday July 28, 2018.

Today’s events started with a Family Sandcastle making at 1pm.

At 2pm there will be a 2vs.2 Beach Volleyball Tournament at Sandy Point for ages 13+.

There will be a Poker run at 6:30pm at the Community Centre $10 per player.

Tomorrow events start at 1pm with a water war at the playground along with face painting, rock painting, kite flying and more.

4pm there will be a community potluck at the community centre.

There will be a Best Fun in The Sun Themed Dessert for $30.

Best Homemade Non-Alcoholic Punch with a prize $30.

Best dressed dessert with a prize of $30.

At 6pm there will be Minute to win it with $200 for first place and $100 for second place.

To end off the festival there will be Block party and a fireworks show at the Water view Road/dock.

Fun in the Sun Day 3

Postville’s Fun in the Sun Festival started on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 and runs until Saturday July 28, 2018.

Today’s events started with a Bike Race at 1:30 with prizes of $15 for 1st, $10 for 2nd, and $5 for 3rd.

At 3:30 there will be a Homemade Boat Race with a first prize of $50 and 2nd place of $25.

To end of today’s events there will be a Fun in the Sun Bingo at the Community Centre at 6:30 with a return trip with Air Borealis for the jackpot prize.

Tomorrow’s events will start with a Family Sandcastle making at 1pm.

Island Fuel Down, Labrador Diesel Up

The regulated price of gas is taking a slight dip at the pumps today.

All types of gas decreased by up to 0.2 cents per litre while diesel fuel on the island has gone down by the same amount.

Despite the dip on the island, Labrador will see an increase of about 1.0 cent per litre today for diesel.

And as far as furnace and stove oil go, they virtually stay the same (down .01 cents per litre).

Residential propane this week registers the largest drop; it’s down by 3.0 cents per litre.

LATP Training

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership is in the process of screening applicants in Nain to train for potential work as underground Miners in Voisey’s Bay.

If you are interested you must meet the following criteria:

Must have completed grade 10 (level 3 ABE) (transcripts are required),

Must have at least 6 months work experience with a job.

Must consent to a criminal record check

Must be willing to attend a 4 week training program in Ontario

And must complete a medical
