Planned Power Interruption for Nain

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro wish to advise its customers of a Planned Power Interruption (weather permitting) on Thursday, August 9, 2018 from 12 Midnight to 6 am affecting the community of Nain.

The reason for the outage is to complete planned maintenance to the Diesel Plant.

NL Hydro apologizes to its customers for any inconveniences caused due to this interruption in service.

Rigolet Salmon Festival starts tonight

The 21st Annual Salmon Festival in Rigolet will be starting today and running until August 11, 2018.

The Festival will start at 6pm with Opening Ceremonies.

Followed by that there will be a parade and Karaoke/Fire Pit at the Net Loft.

Tomorrow events will start at 1pm with Elders afternoon for ages 55+ with Merchandise Bingo and 120 card game.

Gas Prices Predicted to Decrease Slightly

Gas is expected to drop this week, according to the Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices.

The regulated price is forecast to go down by close to 2 (1.9) cents per litre.

Diesel could drop by about a cent (0.9).

And heating and stove oils are projected to decrease by close to a cent and a half (1.3).

Trip to Hebron (Audio)

There are quite a lot of projects on the go up north in Hebron.

One of which was the Hebron Family project where the people left Nain on Monday, July 23 and returned on Monday, July 30, 2018.

John Jararuse is a senior of Nain.

He is happy to have been an invited guest once again and stay at his former hometown this summer.

Jararuse has been going back for quite a few years, and has accompanied the archeologists on the work they’re doing each summer.

He says they saw a lot of polar bears, black bears, and the char is plentiful, but there were no signs of seals around at that time.

Day 2 of the Makkovik Trout Festival

The 28th Annual Trout Festival in Makkovik started yesterday August 7, 2018 and runs until Saturday, August 11, 2018.

Day 2 of the Festival started at 1:30pm with Family and Friends Sad Sculpture Contest with a trophy for Best Sculpture with a theme of food.

2pm there will be a mug-up at the community Hall with a presentation on Cultural Plants by Carrie cannon.

This evening at 6pm there will be a DSHD Bingo.

Also at 6pm there will be a dance for ages up 5 years old.

To end off the day there will be a formal dance for ages 6-12, Dads and Daughters and sons and Mothers.

Tomorrow’s events start at 10am with a Trout Festival Treasure hunt for ages up to 6.

11am – 2 pm there will be water mania for all different categorized ages.

Other events for tomorrow include: community BBQ, Trout festival bingo and men’s soccer.

Aqpik Jam Music Festival 2018

The Aqpik Jam Music Festival will start on August 13, 2018 in Kuujjuaq, Quebec.

It will run until August 16, 2018.

Archaeology Open House in Nain

For two weeks in July and August a team from Memorial University and Nain mapped the sod house village at Kivallek with drones and conducted small archaeological tests, producing a much improved map and aerial document of the most of the most important winter village in the region before the mission community was established at nearby Okak.

A community open house will be held in the town council boardroom today, August 7, 2018 from 6:30 pm to 8 pm to discuss the results of the project.

Salmon Festival in Rigolet (Audio)

The 21st Salmon Festival in Rigolet will start tomorrow at 6pm.

Dinah Wolfrey is the Recreation Assistant.

She says there will be an opening ceremony and the parade starts after that.

Wolfrey says there will be entertainment and square dancing as well.

Cut-off Dates for the 2018 North Coast of Labrador Freight Service

Nunatsiavut Marine wishes to advise customers that the cut-off dates for the 2018 shipping season are as follows:

Oct 15, 2018 – Commercial Contractor Equipment and Materials

Oct 31, 2018 – All Other Residential Freight and Household Goods

Please note that Nunatsiavut Marine will continue to accept freight for shipping to the North Coast based on available space and routing as long as conditions allow.

However, delivery of items received after the deadline cannot be guaranteed.

Master-Apprentice Inuttitut Program

The Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism is offering a Master-Apprentice Program for one fluent speaker and one apprentice, each from Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville, and Rigolet.

The goal of this program is set to get a non-fluent speaker learn Inuttitut from the Master.

You will engage in daily activities with each other from Monday to Friday for 10 to 15 hours per week, for seven months.

This program will begin September 10, 2018 and run until March 2019.
