Makkovik Trout Festival kicks off Today

The 28th Annual Trout Festival in Makkovik starts today.

The Festival starts at 2pm with Amazing Plant Race Canada with Erica Oberndorfer who is Post-doctoral Fellow Labrador Institute of Memorial University for ages 8-11 at the Youth Centre.

At 6:30pm there will a Trout Festival Parade.

There is $200 prize for the most Outrageously Dressed Person with Trout Festival Theme.

Using the following materials only Garbage bags, Newspaper, cardboard, duct tape or Packaging tape.

Lastly, at 10 pm, the evening will close out with fireworks at the Hebron area of Makkovik.

Tomorrow’s events start at 1:30pm with Family and Friends Sand Sculpture Contest at Ranger Bight Beach.

Other events scheduled for tomorrow include Mug-up, DHSD Bingo, Dance for ages up to 5 years old and a Formal Dance.

Pauktuutit Projects (Audio)

The Pauktuutit Women of Canada is very busy this summer.

Rebecca Kudloo is the President.

She says she traveled to New York twice this summer.

Kudloo says the first trip was for Commission of Status of Women and the second trip was for Permanent Forum on the Indigenous Issues.

Nunatsiavut Government Seeking Committee Members

The Nunatsiavut Government’s Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism are in the process of developing an “Okak 1918 Commemoration Committee” in partnership with the Tradition and Transition Partnership are looking for Beneficiaries that would be interested in being a part of the Voluntary Committee.

They are asking interested Beneficiaries to submit the following:

Detail on your connection to Okak, why you would like to become a member, and your full name, and best way to contact you if you are a successful candidate.

Seeking Committee Members to represent the following:

One representative Beneficiary per Nunatsiavut Community (Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville, and Rigolet) and one representative Beneficiary for Upper Lake Melville and North West River.

Nain Moravian Bible School

A Moravian Bible School will be taking place in Nain next week.

The Bible School will be held at the Jens Haven Memorial School.

This is for children 6 -12 years of age.

There will be games, crafts, music and movies and includes snacks and a nutritious lunch from 10 am till 5pm.

The event starts on Monday, August 13 – Friday, August 17, 2018.

There will be 5 people coming from Alberta on Saturday, August 11 th -18 th.

Reverend Beatrice Hope, Layminister Martha Winters- Abel and Joan Winters will be helping out.

The Moravian Bible School is sponsored by the Moravian Church of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian District of the Moravian Church in North America and the Moravian Board World Mission.

Researchers in Nain (Audio)

There are some researchers in Nain this summer.

Alain Currier and Fredrick Dwyer are the researchers from Montreal.

They say their trip to Nain was to conduct a research regarding the permafrost in Nain and Postville.

Dwyer says they are doing a field work on the three fires in Nain and Postville as well.

Application Deadline Today for 7plex in Hopedale

The Nunatsiavut Government 7plex Housing Units will be ready for occupancy in Hopedale soon.

The application forms are available as of today and may be picked up at the NG Office, DHSD Office or Hopedale Inuit Community Government Office.

The deadline for applications is today, August 3, 2018.

The units are designated for families who are at risk of having their children go into care or potentially could have their children returned to their care with appropriate housing and supports.

The families must be open to working with the Family Connections Program and be agreeable to the rules in place such as no alcohol/illicit drug use in units, only individuals listed on the rental agreement permitted to reside in the home, etc…

Nominations of Candidate(s) for AngajukKâk for Nain

Nominations of candidates for election for the AngajukKâk for the Community Government Elections for the Municipality of Nain will be received between the hours of 9 am to 4 pm starting on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 to Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at the Nain Inuit Community Government Office/Meeting Room.

Nominations shall be in writing and shall state the name and residence of the candidate and shall be signed by the Proposer and Seconder, both of whom shall be present together with the Candidate, who shall also sign signifying his or her acceptance of the nomination.

Every Candidate for Election for the AngajukKâk shall, at the time of his or her nomination, deposit the sum of $25.00 with the returning officer.

The qualifications of a candidate for Election for the AngajukKâk are as follows:

  1. Be an Inuk
  2. Be a Canadian Citizen of the full age of 19 years
  3. And be an ordinarily resident in the community or area for
    at least two months prior to the date set for nomination.

The Election, if required, will take place on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 between the hours of 8 am and 8 pm at a polling booth to be located at the NICG.

Fuel Prices Go Up

Motorists are in store for a slight jump at the pumps today.

The regulated price of gas is up by 2.5 cents a litre while diesel shoes an increase of a cent and a half.

Heating and stove are showing a jump of just over a cent a litre.

Meanwhile residential propane prices are up by three cents per litre.

100th Anniversary of Okak (Audio)

2018 marks the 100 year anniversary of the Spanish Influenza Epidemic that devastated Labrador’s Inuit. Okak was hit particularly hard,

Jim Lyall is the Minister of Culture, Recreation and Tourism and the Ordinary Member for Nain.

He says that they would luje community input for how to commemorate this anniversary.
