Short-Term Radio Relief Worker Needed at OK

OKâlaKatiget Society is looking for a short-term Radio Relief Worker.

This will be during the period of August 16, 2018 to September 28, 2018 with the possibility of extension.

Inuktitut would definitely be an asset but not required.

Work hours would be from Monday- Friday 9am-4m.

Schedule for Day 4 and 5 of Makkovik Trout Fest

The 28th Annual Trout Festival in Makkovik started on August 7, 2018 and runs until tomorrow, August 11, 2018.

Today, they started at 10 am with an Open House and Story Telling at the Museum.

At 12 pm the Trout Festival fair started at the Arena.

This afternoon at 4 pm, Carrie Cannon will be hosting a “How to make tree salve” workshop.

This evening at 7 pm Zombie Chase is a go at the Town Council Office.

At 8 pm Teen barbeque at the Teen Centre.

There will be games and door prizes for youth aged 13 to 19.

Also at 8 pm there is Texas Hold ‘em at the Arena.

$1000 prize with a $200 runner up prize, and there will be tickets to be sold on items as well.

Here is the schedule for Day 5, Saturday:

9 am, Cory Eldred Pottle 2 on 2 Co-ed Beach Volleyball Heritage Classi ages 13 plus.

A Barbeque canteen will be available.

5pm is the Trout Festival Supper which consists of Smoked Trout, Trout cakes, Fish ‘n Brewis, Fried Trout, Turkey and Moose, it is $5.00/ plate.

After that it is the Annual Carol Dyson Baking Contest with a $100 prize for the best dessert.

At 10 pm to 1:30 am is the Trout Festival Dance for ages 19 plus.

The Gregoire Boys will be performing.

Admission is $10.00.

The theme is Gangsters, and there is also a $100 prize for the best costume.

Nain Moravian Bible Camp (Audio)

A Moravian Bible Camp will be taking place in Nain for children next week.

Marilyn Gurnsey is part of the Nain Moravian Church Mission Team.

She says the Bible Camp will have children participating from Grades 1-6 .

Gurnsey says they will be involved with crafts, Bible stories, games and movies.

She will be accompanied by four others who are also from Alberta like her.

She says Reverand Beatrice Hope, Layminister Martha Winters-Abel and Joan Winters will also be helping out.

The Salmon Festival in Rigolet is now into day 3.

Here is tomorrow’s schedule:

10 am to 11 am Jacinda Beals Band will be performing.

10 am to 12 pm, Booth Games (25 cents for kids and 50 cents for adults)

Bingo cards, 50/50 and BYOB tickets will be sold at this time.

At 1 pm Justin Foley Kids Entertainment.

Also at 1 pm is the Strong Man/Strong Woman Competition.

5pm is the Salmon Fest at the Hall.

6pm, Closing Ceremonies at the Hall

7:30 pm, Giant Bingo.

10 pm Fireworks at the Rock Dock.

And to end off the Salmon Fest is the BYOB at the Hall.

Jacinda Beals will once again be performing, and it is a $10 entry fee.

Job Opportunity for Youth with the OK Society

The OKâlaKatiget Society has obtained funding for two youth positions.

One Radio Producer Assistant and one Television Intern.

This position will be for a period of approximately 29 weeks.

Applicants must be:

  • Youth and be between the ages of 18 to 30 years old.
  • Unemployed and out of school.
  • The period of employment starts September 6, 2018.
  • The closing date to apply is August 29, 2018.

Trout Fest in Makkovik

The 28th Annual Trout Festival in Makkovik started August 7th and will run until August 11, 2018.

Day 3 the festival started at 10am with trout festival treasure hunt for ages 6 and up and they meet at the Youth centre.

11am Watermania ages 12-14 was by the museum.

1pm Watermania for ages 8-11 was by the museum.

2pm Watermania ages 7 years old.

4pm Community Barbeque down by the museum hosted by Vale.

6pm Trout Festival BINGO 2x $1000 to go.

All regular games $100.

Tickets on items.

Selling cards 3-5 at the Youth centre.

10pm Men’s soccer team presents “The Beer Olympics” ages 19 plus, Contact Chesley Evans for more details.

Rigolet’s Salmon Festival: Day 2

The Salmon Festival in Rigolet is into their second day of events today.

At 1 pm today they had an Elder’s Afternoon for 55 plus at the Seniors Building which included Merchandise Bingo and 120 Card Game.

Tonight at 6:30 pm, Adult games at the Hall.

And here are the event’s for tomorrow:

10 to 11 am Jacinda Beals will be performing.

10 to 12 pm Booth games (25 cents for kids and 50 cents for adults).

And also from 10 am to 12 pm there’s a cardboard boat making at the Hall.

11 am to 12 pm DHSD Feud at the Net Loft for adults aged 19 plus.

12 pm, Cake Walk at the Net Loft.

1 pm, Volleyball Tournament for people aged 13 and up ($5.00 entry and winners take half of the money in).

A square dance is a go from 1 to 2 pm.

Booth games from 1 to 4 pm including Water Relay, Water Balloon Dodge Ball and Pass the water.

2 to 4 pm there will be entertainment.

The cardboard boat race sets sail at 4 pm for ages 10 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 18 and 19 plus.

At 6 to 12 am is the Youth Dance.
6 to 8 pm ages 0 to 4 and grades Kindergarten to grades 3, Parents or Babysitter must accompany toddlers aged 0 to 4.

8 to 10 pm Grades 4 to 6.

And 10 pm to 12 am grades 7 to 12 and 18 year olds.

Canteen and glow products will be sold as well.

Forteau’s 39th Bakeapple Festival (Audio)

The 39 th annual Bakeapple Festival officially opens in Forteau, Labrador today.

Dean Flynn is the Chairperson of the Labrador Straits Folk Bakeapple Festival.

He says a lot of activities have been organized till Sunday.

Flynn says local musicians are lined up to perform and the suppers with bakeapple deserts.

He says all the monies raised goes to the hospital, school and patients travel through Forteau Lions Club.

Flynn added they are hoping to have a bigger celebration for their 40 th next year.

Makkovik and Nain Fish Plant Update

The Makkovik fish plant is still busy processing crab.

Junior Andersen is the Production Manager.

He says 567,032lbs of crab has been landed to date.

Andersen says there’s one crab boat left and over 50 employees are working at the plant.

He adds there are two Turbot boats gone fishing.

Nain fish plant is also busy with Char.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Office Supervisor.

She says 33,284lbs of Char has been landed to date.

Kohlmeister adds there are twenty-five employees working and there are nine fishermen fishing.

Gas Prices Ease This Week

Most regulated fuel prices are seeing a dip at the pumps today.

All types of gas are down by 2.6 cents per litre today, while diesel will drop by 1.6 cents.

Furnace and stove oil are also down by 1.26 per litre, while residential propane will see no change.
