Coastal Community Sheds

There are Community Sheds in of the communities of Nain, Hopedale, and one currently being built in Rigolet.

Cassie Jararuse is the Regional Youth Program Services Coordinator in Makkovik.

The community sheds are open from 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm following summer hours. Unless it’s otherwise noted for each community. This is the time for you to drop by the shed to see what it’s all about.

The sheds has been set up for wood working, small engine repairs and other projects. No experience is necessary, and training will be available for proper and safe use of power tools. The sheds are limited to 10 people at a time, and it’s a first come first serve basis. If the space is full, check back again next time. If you are interested go and check out the space.

The Hopedale Community shed has been open since November 2018, the shed coordinator is William Dicker; He recently held a flat making workshop taught by Ross Flowers. In the near future there will be more opportunities to learn other wood working programs. Please keep an eye out for workshop postings.

Cody Tuglavina is the Nain shed coordinator. Tuglavina encourages Nain residents to drop by the shed to see what types of programming are going on or what workshops you would like to learn. Drop INS are welcomed and encouraged.

The Rigolet community shed is currently being built. Waylon Shiwak is the shed coordinator for their community. Shiwak recently built the shed from ground up and the last thing he has to do is the sidings. If you are willing to help out contact Waylon at 947-3328 ext. 255. Shiwak would appreciate the help.

Youth Leadership Program Applications

The Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism is looking for 7 youth ages 16-18 years of age to attend the Youth Leadership Program at the Torngat Mountains Base Camp and Research Station for the 2019 Season.

Youth must be 16 by December 31, 2018 and the program dates are from August 3-17, 2019.

The aim of the program will be to have youth representing each of Nunatsiavut’s 7 constituencies from Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville, Rigolet, HVGB, North West River, and Mud Lake; and Canada.

The youth will be selected on the merit of their applications.

Board nomination for Hopedale.

There is a position open on the OKâlaKatiget Society Board of Directors in the town of Hopedale.

All Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries are eligible to run for the OKâlaKatiget Society Board of Directors and must have a phone and email access.

To be nominated you must fill out a nomination form, which must be signed by a nominator and a seconder, both of whom must be Nunatsiavut Members.

The nominations are open and close noon on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 and are available at the OKâlaKatiget Society Head office here in Nain.

The completed nomination forms must be returned to the OKâlaKatiget Society office by 12 noon Wednesday, July 17, 2019.

If more than one person is nominated, an election will take place.

Update on seven-plex in Nain

The construction for the seven-plex has started here in Nain.

Kate Mitchell is the First Minister of Nunatsiavut affairs and ordinary member for Makkovik.

She says this building is like the one that was been built in Hopedale.

Mitchell adds the seven-plex will be completed by end of December 2019.

Nain and Makkovik Fish plant Update

The Nain and Makkovik fish plants are now in operation as of July 2nd, 2019.
Deidi Kohlmeister is the Office Supervisor for the Nain fish plant.
She says there are ten employees working at the moment.
Kohlmeister adds the fishermen will start fishing tomorrow and will land their catch on Saturday.
We tried to contact Makkovik fish plant but no one was available at this time.

Moose Hide Workshop Update

The 10 day moosehide workshop will be going ahead tomorrow, July 12, 2019.

Brianna Brown is the Moose Hide Workshop Coordinator with the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

She says that they will be leaving today to set up the workshop and will be having 7 beneficiaries from along the coast including Nain participating in this workshop.

Brown also says that weather permitting, the participants from along the coast including the ones from the North West Territories who are trying to make it to the workshop will still be able to attend.

She adds that if anyone who would want to drop by and check out the workshop, are welcome to do so at Joey Angnatok’s cabin located at Sâttusuak, as this is a teaching opportunity.

14th Annual Rhubarb Festival in Hopedale

The 14th Annual Rhubarb Festival in Hopedale will start Monday, July 15 and run until Saturday, July 20th.

The events will be held at the Nanuk Centre starting off with a Community BBQ at 5pm sponsored by Vale.

On Tuesday, July 16 at 1pm will be the deadline date for the volleyball tournament registration as the tournament will be held on the 17th.

On Thursday, July 18, the festival will be starting their day with a Toddler’s Social from 1-3pm.

On Friday, July 19 starting at 1pm will be Photo Scavenger Hunt.

And ending on Saturday, July 20th from 7am to 7pm will be a fishing contest followed by a Community Bonfire.

OkKak 100 Year Commemoration Applications

To commemorate the significance of the community of OkKak, the Nunatsiavut Government, in partnership with Parks Canada will host an OkKak 100-Year Commemoration at OkKak from September 24-26, 2019.

To commemorate the significant event, 100 people will travel to OkKak by ship to celebrate the community and residents and descendants of OkKak while paying respects and acknowledge the tragedy that happened in 1918.

Participants will stay at OkKak for 3 days, travel and hunt in the area, participate in healing workshops, storytelling sessions, attend a memorial service, erect a monument, etc.

Applicants are now being accepted to attend.

Seniors Summer Program

The Nain Inuit Community Government now has a Senior Program Coordinator hired on this summer to hold senior’s programs.

The new Senior Program Coordinator is Tristan Webb.

The programs will be held at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

On Mondays and Thursdays there is Bingo from 1:30-3pm.

On Tuesday, July 16 will be a painting day from 1:30pm-3:30pm.

Tuesday, July 23 from 1:30-3:30pm will be Panitsiak Making with Tea/Coffee.

On Friday, July 26, starting at 2pm-4pm, the seniors will go outside down by the dump for a boil up and a chance to fish.

Rides for seniors will be available for all events and can be called at 922-2842.

Seniors who attend will have their name put in for a grocery hamper at the end of the program and the more you attend the more changes to win.
