MHA Lela Evans Update (Audio)

MHA Lela Evans is very busy getting updates for the people along the North coast.

We spoke with her to see what information she had on the new ferry, Kamutik W and the new cell service here in Nain.

She says that the Kamutik W will be off schedule for now but will be starting on Monday as it is her first run to the North coast.

Evans also spoke with Bell Aliant and said that the cell service has nothing to do with Voisey’s Bay and that it is a permanent fix.

Alumni Sports meet looking for Community Coordinators for each community

The Alumni Sports meet is looking for one community coordinator and two others to help organize try-outs to select the sports meet team and to sit in on teleconferences for each community.

You cannot take on one of these roles if you plan to try out.

The deadline to apply is tomorrow Thursday, July 11, 2019.

A 100-Year Commemoration at OkKak to be held in September 2019

To commemorate the significance of the community of OkKak, the Nunatsiavut Government, in partnership with Parks Canada will host an OkKak 100-Year Commemoration at OkKak from September 24-26, 2019.

To commemorate the significant event, 100 people will travel to OkKak by ship to celebrate the community and residents and descendants of OkKak while paying respects and acknowledge the tragedy that happened in 1918.

Participants will stay at OkKak for 3 days, travel and hunt in the area, participate in healing workshops, storytelling sessions, attend a memorial service, erect a monument, etc.

Applicants are now being accepted to attend.

If you are a descendant of OkKak who is interested in attending the 100-Year Commemoration Event, please submit a completed application to Brenda Jararuse by email at brenda.jararuse@nunatsiavut.com, and her phone number is 709-922-2942 ext. 239. Or you can send it to your community liaison officer.

Anyone needing assistance with filling out the application can also go and see the Community Liaison Officers in each community for assistance.

Nominations open on the OKâlaKatiget Society Board of Directors in Hopedale

There is a position open on the OKâlaKatiget Society Board of Directors in the town of Hopedale.

All Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries are eligible to run for the OKâlaKatiget Society Board of Directors and must have a phone and email access.

To be nominated you must fill out a nomination form, which must be signed by a nominator and a seconder, both of whom must be Nunatsiavut Members.

The nominations are open today, July 10, 2019 and will close noon on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 and are available at the OKâlaKatiget Society Head office here in Nain.

The completed nomination forms must be returned to the OKâlaKatiget Society office by 12 noon Wednesday, July 17, 2019.

If more than one person is nominated, an election will take place.

More details will be made available on OKâlaKatiget Society Radio.

New Senior’s Program with the Nain Inuit Community Government

The Nain Inuit Community Government now has a Senior Program Coordinator hired on this summer to hold senior’s programs.

The new Senior Program Coordinator is Tristan Webb.

The programs will be held at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

On Mondays and Thursdays, Bingo will be held from 1:30-3pm.

Today will be storytelling at 2-4pm.

On Tuesday, July 16 will be a painting day from 1:30pm-3:30pm.

Tuesday, July 23 from 1:30-3:30pm will be Panitsiak Making with Tea/Coffee.

On Friday, July 26, starting at 2pm-4pm, the seniors will go outside down by the dump for a boil up and a chance to fish.

Rides for seniors will be available for all events and can be called at 922-2842.

Seniors who attend will have their name put in for a grocery hamper at the end of the program and the more you attend the more changes to win.

Lena and Gus Semigak heading to Hebron (audio)

Summer is here again and Nunatsiavut beneficiaries are heading up to Hebron for work for the summer.

Lena and Gus Semigak are from Hopedale.

Gus says this is the 17th year since he started working in Hebron for the summer.

Lena says she has been working as a cook for five years.

Gus adds that he will continue the work on the church and that it is almost completed.

Cellular services available in Nain

The current Bell Mobility customers now have access to LTE wireless service throughout Nain.

Isabelle Boulet is the Media Relations with Bell Aliant.

Cellular services are available in Nain now since July 5, 2019.

She says new customers can contact one of their dealer locations in Happy Valley-Goose Bay or Labrador City to get set up with a wireless plan.

Bell Aliant doesn’t have any announcements right now about new Bell wireless expansion plans on the coast.

However they are partnering with the provincial government’s cellular service pilot project to enhance wireless service in communities.

This pilot project will go ahead in the following communities, on the Great Northern Peninsula, in Southern Labrador and in St. Mary’s Bay, as well as Mainland and Three Rock Cove, King’s Point, Pouch Cove and Lord’s Cove.

New policy at the Libra House in Goose Bay

The Libra House has a new policy out now that women and children fleeing from violence are able to take their pets along with them.

Jessica Keating is the Executive Director for the Libra House in Goose-Bay- Goose Bay.

They have a list of people who are able to foster their pets during their stay at the Libra House, so women and children don’t have to worry about leaving their pets behind.

The Libra house provides the animal food, such as treats and food.

This is for any woman and child who is fleeing violence in their own home such as; sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, verbal abuse, financial abuse and much more from a family member, any type of relationship, or a spouse.

There is a maximum link of stay but right now there can be three people can come to the Libra House.

The Libra House has been running now for 34 years, December 2020 will be their 35th year anniversary.

Keating adds that if anyone is thinking about leaving their unsafe environments please do so, and they accept women all over Labrador.

Seal Skin/Moose Hide Tanning Workshop

The Department of Health and Social Development here in Nain will be having a workshop for youth ages 18-30.

Ocean Wyatt is the Youth Outreach Worker for DHSD.

She says they are trying to get involved with the moose hide tanning workshop that will be held on Thursday with Brianna Brown.

They are looking to get a couple seals to spend the day teaching and learning the seal skin/moose hide tanning process.

Wyatt adds that the deadline to apply for this workshop had passed but is in the process of planning for the workshop.
