Kivallek Archaeology Trip (Audio)

A group of Archaeologists are doing research in the Kivallek area which is an old Inuit village not far from Okak.

Peter Whitridge is an Archaeologist with the Memorial University in St. Johns.

He says as a professor at MUN of Newfoundland in St.Johns him and 3 students are traveling to Kivallek.

Whitridge says they hired on a students from Nain.

He adds when his team came back from Kivallek, they will be holding an open house.

Youth Leadership Program Applications

The Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism is looking for 7 youth ages 16-18 years of age to attend the Youth Leadership Program at the Torngat Mountains Base Camp and Research Station for the 2019 Season.

This program dates are from August 3-17, 2019 and any youth applicants must be the age of 16 by December 31, 2018.

The aim of the program will be to have youth representing each of Nunatsiavut’s 7 constituencies from Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville, Rigolet, HVGB, North West River, and Mud Lake; and Canada.

The youth will be selected on the merit of their applications.

Water leak repaired

The water was shut off for most of the town of Nain yesterday.

The Municipal crew members were busy repairing a water leak until 1am early this morning.

Beni Ittulak is the Town Manager for the Nain Inuit Community Government.

She says the water leak was located near the Nunatsiavut Government building.

When the first leak was repaired, crew members turned the water line back on and noticed that there was a second leak near the one that was just repaired.

But thanks to the crew members, the residents now have running water and both water leaks are completed and repaired.

Also, please be advised that the Boil Water advisory is still in effect.

Makkovik Radio Station AD

There is an employment opportunity for the Radio Announcer for the Makkovik Radio Station is still ongoing until filled.

Margaret Penny is a customer service representative with Air Borealis.

She says that the deadline was this past Friday, July 12, 2019 but they had no applicants so the Job Ad will continue until filled.

Rate of pay is $12/h plus 4% vacation pay, with 30 hours a week.

Duties include; airing announcements, Doing programming such as teens and adults, and calling Bingo.

Hopedale & Makkovik Festivals

Today marks day three for the 14th Annual Rhubarb Festival in Hopedale.

The events for today started off at 1pm with the Co-ed 4 on 4 Volleyball Tournament at the Nanuk Centre.

At 3pm there will be Fireman’s Challenge for ages 18-25, 26-39, 40-49, and 50 and up, with 2 male, 2 female, location to be determined.

There will be a senior’s Social at 5pm at Nanuk Centre sponsored by DHSD.

Located across from the Nanuk Centre will be cardboard boat race held at 7pm for 16 and up, male and female categories.

Must use cardboard and duct tape only.

Tomorrow’s events start at 1pm with a Toddlers social at the Nanuk Center.

There will also be Adult’s Fear Factor, Dance Challenge and Famous Couples beauty Pageant.

DHC-2 Beaver Aircraft Plane Crash

On Monday at approximately 11:30pm the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax received a call about an overdue aircraft.

We spoke with Major Mark Norris the officer in charge at the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax.

He says the overdue aircraft which departed from a fishing lodge at Cross Road Lake off side of Sevierville Quebec.

According to the VOCM news:

Three bodies were located yesterday, and searchers are still looking for the remaining four people who were on board the de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver aircraft.

The effort has been handed over to RCMP as a missing person’s case.

Quebec media have identified 61-year-old Gilles Morin as the pilot of the DHC-2 Beaver.

Morin was a pilot with Quebec-based Air Saguenay which did work with Three Rivers Lodge based at Crossroads Lake in Labrador.

Jean Tremblay who owns the aircraft contracted to Three Rivers Lodge in Labrador says they’re not sure if the plane crashed on landing or take-off.

He says when the aircraft failed to return to base camp as scheduled, they engaged their emergency plan.

Katie Winters Senior (Audio)

It always good to hear stories from elders of the memories they had of growing up.

Katie Winters of Nain remembers when the boat Winifred Lee would travel to fishing camps to collect salted fish.

Winters says that her time out on the land was always busy with the cod fishery and salting char.

She adds that there were funny moments while out at Kammâsuk.

President Lampe sends his condolences to family of Richard Rich

President offers condolences on the passing of Richard Rich On behalf of the Nunatsiavut Government and Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement, President Johannes Lampe today extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of respected Rigolet elder Richard Rich, who passed away Tuesday.

“Richard was a strong advocate for his community, someone who was never shy to stand up for what he believed in,” says President Lampe.

“No matter the issue, Richard always demonstrated his leadership with a strong commitment to his community as well as to other Labrador Inuit communities.

He was so passionate about making his community a better place that he often refused to take no for an answer.

While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life and the contributions he made.

He will be sadly missed, but his legacy will live on for many years to come.

Kamutik W now accepting frozen cargo

The Kamutik W is confirmed that they are accepting frozen cargo to the north coast communities.

Kim Williams is the Cargo Supervisor with Nunatsiavut Marine.

She says if you would like to ship any frozen cargo to the north coast you can.

They only accept frozen cargo on Wednesday and Thursdays.

The Kamutik W left Happy Valley Goose Bay yesterday with frozen cargo for the north coast.

Williams says if you would like to get any frozen cargo shipped on the Kamutik W you must call to make an appointment.

Hebron Ambassadors

The Nunatsiavut Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism hired on their Hebron Ambassadors to operate Hebron for the summer.

Jill Larkham is the Director of Tourism with the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says the Ambassador this year is Lena Semigak and Justine Tuglavina is the Ambassadors assistant.

The Ambassador will be responsible for providing tours to guests who are visiting the Hebron area and to lead daily operations at Hebron.

Larkham says staff arrived to Hebron last week.

The Contractor this year is Levi Nochasak and the labourers are Gus Semigak, Danny Jararuse and Seth Tuglavina.

Right now they are setting up camp.

Crew members will be in Hebron now until end of August.

Larkham also added that a Cruise ship will be making its way to Hebron on July 25, 2019.
