Coastal Community Freezers

The OKalâKatiget Radio contacted each of the Nunatsiavut communities to see what they have to offer in their Communities Freezers.

Chelsea Shiwak is the Town Clerk for the community of Rigolet.

She says the Community Freezer only has Fish and Red Berries, and they will be placing an order sometimes soon.

In Postville we spoke with Shirley Goudie the Town Manager.

In their Community Freezer they have only Char, and anyone wanting to donate any food items can drop it off to the Postville Inuit Community Government.

In Nain, there is only char available at the community Freezer.

OK Radio could not get an update from the Community Freezer in Hopedale.

14th Annual Rhubarb Festival Day 5

Today marks day five of the 14th Annual Rhubarb Festival in Hopedale.

The events for today started at 1pm with a Photo Scavenger Hunt for ages 13-25, 26-39, and 40 and up with teams of three.

And a reminder for the fishing contest that the deadline to enter will be at 4pm.

At 5pm, there will be a Rhubarb Recipe Bake Off.

There will be Giant Radio Bingo at 7pm with cards selling from 10am-5pm at the Fire hall and Nanuk Centre.

Tomorrow, July 20, 2019 is the last day of events for the Rhubarb Festival.

At 7am to 7pm, there will be a Fishing contest with only char/trout within Hopedale Boundaries.

The fee to enter the fishing will consist of $10 per person.

And to finish off the Rhubarb Festival for this year, a Community Bonfire will take place at the Nanuk Centre at 8pm.

19th Fun in the Sun Festival

The 19th annual Fun in the Sun Festival starts in Postville on Tuesday, July 23 and runs until Saturday July 27, 2019.

The festival will begin with a Fair on Tuesday, July 23 starting 6:30pm located at the Kaipokok Community Centre with a $1 fee.

At the fair they will have a Bake Walk, Face Painting, Bean Bag Toss, Lollipop Game, and much more.

There will also be events such as, minute to win it, community walk, vale BBQ, and much more.

Okalakatiget Radio will have the daily Fun in the Sun Schedule next week.

Makkovik Radio Station AD

There is an employment opportunity for the Radio Announcer for the Makkovik Radio Station is still ongoing until filled.

Margaret Penny is a customer service representative with Air Borealis.

She says that the deadline was Friday, July 12, 2019 but they had no applicants so the Job Ad will continue until filled.

Rate of pay is $12/h plus 4% vacation pay, with 30 hours a week.

Duties include; airing announcements, Doing programming such as teens and adults, and calling Bingo.

Hebron Archeology Project (Audio)

The Archeology Department is ready for their trip for Hebron for the summer.

Michelle Davies is the Archeologist Assistant with the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says they will be taking two Hebron relocates along with one family member, four participants, and one Mental Health Worker.

They will be going up to record family houses and fishing camps as well as doing some interviews.

Plane crash in remote area of Labrador

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador is leading the operation in relation to a plane crash that occurred on Monday, July 15 Approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Nain.

Corporal Jolene Garland is with the RCMP Media Relations Officer.

He says the initial response was led by the Maritime Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC), whose role ended yesterday evening.

Seven males were on board the plane the pilot from Quebec, two fishing guides from this province and four passengers from the United States.

Three bodies were recovered, search efforts will continue this week for the remaining four occupants of the plane.

The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team is on the ground in Labrador and work is in progress to get them and their equipment to the remote site of the crash.

Also supporting the efforts are RCMP Air Services, with spotters from Nain Ground Search and Rescue, and RCMP General Investigation Section.

The Canadian Armed Forces Happy Valley-Goose Bay is on standby to assist as needed.

The plane was reported overdue late Monday night, after it failed to return by 7:00 p.m. as expected.

It is unknown at this time if the plane crashed en route to the fishing camp or during its return; the cause of the crash is not known and will be investigated by the Canadian Transport Safety Board.

Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.

Nain and Makkovik Fish Plant Update

The Makkovik and Nain fish plant employees are busy with crab and char.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Office Supervisor for the plant.

She says there are seventeen employees cleaning Char at the moment and there are four fishermen fishing.

She says 1,715lbs of Char has been landed to this date.

She adds there are frozen Char to sell and it is five dollars and seventy five cents a pound.

In Makkovik we spoke with Junior Andersen who is the Production Manager.

He says fifty employees are working on crab.

Andersen says 220,676lbs of crab has been landed to date and there are seven crab boats fishing.

The prices of the snow crab are as follows;

Fresh Section:
$8 per pound

Frozen selections:
5-8 oz $11 per pound
8-10oz $13 per pound
10-12 oz$14 per pound
12-14oz $14.50 per pound

He adds that the Makkovik fish plant need more employees to work at the fish plant, so if anyone interested can call 923-2103

Woodward’s Oil Update Unfroze

On June 25, 2019 the Woodward Group of Companies’ oil tanker arrived to Nain.

Peter Lidd is the Gas Attendant for Woodward’s.

He says the prices are all now unfroze. The gas price went up today Thursday, July 18, 2019 by a $1.60.

For a liter of diesel is $1.58, and for a liter of stove oil is $1.37.

45 gallons of gas costs $329.43, and for 45 gallons of stove oil is $281.67.

They are open from Monday-Friday’s from 9am-5pm and on Friday’s the hours are from 9am-5:30pm.

29th Annual Trout Festival in Makkovik

This year will be the 29th year for the Annual Trout Festival in Makkovik.

The Festival will be starting from the August 6th and runs until the August 10th.

It will start at 9:30am with build your own raft for ages 7-14 and 15 and up.

On Wednesday, August 7th it will be starting off at 9am with a Clean Energy Fair for K-Gr. 6 at the Multipurpose Room.

On Thursday, August 8th at 10am will be Open House and storytelling.

Friday, August 9, starting off at 10am will be Amazing Plant race with Erica Oberndorfer.

And on the final day, Saturday, August 10 starting at 10am will be the 5th Annual Diabetes run/walk.

14th Annual Rhubarb Festival Day 4

Today marks day four for the 14th Annual Rhubarb Festival in Hopedale.

The events for today started off with Toddlers Social at the Nanuk from 1-3pm for ages 0-4 years old, sponsored by Hopedale DHSD.

At 3pm there will be Adult’s Fear Factor for ages 18-49 and 50 and up, pairs male or female, location to be determined.

A Dance Challenge will be held for ages 13 and up at 7pm at the Nanuk Centre followed by a Famous Couples Beauty Pageant for 18 and up cross dressing and will consist of teams of two, one male and one female.

Tomorrow’s events start at 1pm with a photo scavenger hunt.

There will also be rhubarb recipe bake off and a radio bingo.
