English River Fish Count (Audio)

The English River fish count in Postville had its fence up since July 15, 2019 and they are counting char, salmon and lake trout.

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable Resources for Nunatsiavut government.

He says they have six employees working at the English River.

Broomfield adds this project will be running until mid October.

TRHA update (Audio)

The Torngat Regional Housing Association is quite busy again this year.

William Lucy is the Coordinator for TRHA.

Lucy says 5 new homes are being built in Nain this year and 4 new homes for Hopedale, 2 homes in Makkovik and 2 homes in Rigolet.

Renovations are started for the north coast, crew are working on homes that were not completed last year; so they are continuing construction for this year.

Some new housing repairs are coming but they are still not allocated yet.

Nain Music Festival Wanting Local Performers

The Nain Recreation Department are still looking for local performers to play during this month’s Music Festival.

The Music festival is scheduled for August 24 and August 25, 2019.

Lisa Ivany is the Recreation Director with the Nain Inuit Community Government.

Right now they have confirmed artists who will perform during the festival which are music artists such as David Hart, Saali Keelan, and The Flummies.

If you are Interested in performing at the upcoming Festival next weekend please leave your name and contact phone number to the Recreation Director Lisa Ivany, or Recreation Assistant Mary Maggo at 922-2690/2691.

Ivany adds that she will be posting a Schedule of events on Monday, so keep your eye out for that.

Confirmation for Saali traveling to Nain (Audio)

The Nain Recreation Department is holding the Nain’s Music Festival end of this month.

We had a phone call yesterday from one of the musicians, Saali Keelan.

He called to confirm his flight arrangements.

Keelan says he will be traveling from Montreal on August 22, 2019 and will be spending a night in Happy Valley Goose Bay on that evening and he would like to set up a gig to perform while there.

He then will be traveling to Nain the next day on August 23.

Keelan says he will be performing in Nain on August 25 during the Nain Music Festival.

Nain and Makkovik Fish Plant Update

The Makkovik fish plant is done with crab for the year.

Junior Andersen is the Production Manager for the plant.

He says 242,000lbs of crab has been landed to date, and this was the last boat to land its crab.

Andersen says there are 40 employees working at the plant.

He says after this day all the crab will be shipped out to Goose Bay and they will be trucked out from there.

He adds there is crab to sell at the fish plant, if anyone is interested.

The Turbot fishery will start up soon.

Nain fish plant is busy with Char as well.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Office Supervisor.

She says 19,926 lbs of Char has been landed to date.

Kohlmeister says there are 26 employees and 5 fishermen fishing.

She adds there are crab legs, smoked char and cod fillets to sell if anyone is interested.

The cost of the cod fillet is $35.00 for 5lbs.

Gas, Diesel Prices Take a Dive, Propane Steady

Fuel prices have taken a dip.

The regulated price of both gas and diesel is down by just over three cents a litre.

Furnace and stove oil are down by two and a half cents.

Meanwhile, there’s no change in the price of propane.

Makkovik Craft position

The Makkovik Craft Centre is seeking applications from persons interested in being a part-time worker in the craft shop.

Hours of work will be 20 hours per week, and rate of pay is $15 per hour.

Start date is September 3, 2019.

Deadline for applications is August 30th.

This position is a full time permanent position with the Society.

Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

• Transcribing
• Digitally editing film on Avid software

DHSD Craft Night

The Department of Health and Social Development in Nain are holding Craft Nights every Friday evenings.

Lisa Dicker is the Community Health Worker with DHSD.

She says this Craft Night started in June of this year; and is held every Friday evenings from 7-9pm at the DHSD multipurpose room.

Dicker says last Friday they had about 9 participates attend.

Participants are making their own seal skin bags, seal skin mitts and Moosehide boots.

You can bring your own material to the craft night, but there is already materials provided by DHSD.

Materials that are provided are: Moosehide, Seal skins, Silk, Wool, Threads and needles, knitting needles, crochet hook.

Dicker says she just made another material order in today.

Canada Goose looking for designers

Canada Goose in partnership with Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) announced a call for Inuit designers to join their social entrepreneurship project for Canada’s North, Project is titled Atigi.

Launched for the first time in January 2019, the project is a collection of bespoke parkas created by Inuit designers using their traditional skills, unique designs, and Canada goose materials.

Each designer will be commissioned to create a capsule collection of five pieces for men, women or children.

Proceeds from the sale of each parka from Project Atigi will be going back to Inuit communities across Canada via ITK.

Proceeds from the sale of the first collection were distributed equally between the four Inuit regions for craftsmanship and training programs.

The Project Atigi collection of parkas will be showcased in Canada Goose stores around the world and available for purchase on canadagoose.com in early 2020.

Designers will be selected by a committee representing Inuit and Canada Goose
Selected designers will be notified by September 20, 2019.
