TRHA Applications

Individuals, who are interested in applying for housing/repair assistance from Torngat Regional Housing Application in the 2020 Construction Season, must submit a new application to the local housing committee on, or before January 31, 2020.

Applications received after the deadline date will not be considered.

All individuals applying for housing/repair assistance must submit a copy of their 2019 Income Tax Summary to the local housing committee, as soon as it becomes available to do them.

You can pick up an application at your local Inuit Community Government Office.

Applicants who fail to submit a copy of their 2019 Income to the Local Housing Committee will not be considered for assistance in 2020.

SMARTICE Program Update

The SMARTICE Program is doing great so far with their training.

Rex Holwell is the Northern Production Lead along with four trainees and three staff assisting.

He says they will be training for six weeks.

So far on their first week, they completed soft skills, and last week they completed the Leaned 101 training.

Starting this week, they are training for the Smart Buoys for the next four weeks.

Soon they will begin training for First Aid and WHMIS.

Family Meeting With Lela Evans

A meeting was held yesterday afternoon in Nain.

Lela Evans is the MHA for the Torngat Mountains.

Evans says Richard Leo helped set up this meeting on a short notice.

The meeting was held at the Nain Department of Health and Social Development at 1:30 pm yesterday afternoon.

Topics that were discussed were mainly focused on families who have their children in Care with CSSD, for Foster Parents, and Babysitters.

Evans says there was a huge turnout of 15 people.

With the amount of people she says there was a lot of feedback and everyone had the opportunity to discuss their problems and their thoughts about having children in care or children who are in the foster system.

She adds that she is preparing to fight for changes and she needs your input and more people to voice their concerns on what is working and what isn’t working for you.

We will get in contact with Evans again, when she returns from traveling to get another update.

1st Alumni Sports Meet

The 1st Alumni Sports Meet will be taking place in Nain from October 10 to the 14 at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

Vyann Andersen is the Mental Health and Addictions Worker with DHSD in Postville.

She says there will be participants from Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik and Rigolet.

Julie Dicker will be the coach for Nain, for Hopedale; Boas Mitsuk and Danielle Pottle, Vyann Andersen and Kayla Andersen for Postville, in Makkovik; Betty Sampson and Paul Andersen, and for Rigolet the coaches are Charlene Palliser and Pam Campbell.

They are still looking for volunteer photographers from Nain, Makkovik, Postville, or Rigolet.

You must be available, own your own camera, you must provide a slideshow for the awards ceremony, and your travel to Nain will be paid for.

Andersen also says they are also looking for experienced linesmen, referees, and score keepers.

Markers will also be needed for the Cross Country Run and assistants for the Inuit Games.

They are still looking for 2 female and 3 male from Postville, 2 male from Makkovik, and possibly 2 male and 2 females from Rigolet.

As the athletes arrive Thursday morning, they will begin with Table Tennis Encounters.

At 6 pm will be the Opening Ceremonies and volleyball at 7 pm.

NG Website Launched (Audio)

There has been a new website established called, “Nunatsiavut Stories” with the Nunatsiavut Government here in Nain.

Jim Lyall is the Ordinary Member and also the Language, Culture and Tourism with the Nunatsiavut Government and Kyle Crotty is the Heritage Program Coordinator.

Lyall and Crotty say they collect stories from all of the people from across Nunatsiavut and outside of Nunatsiavut.

The stories they collect are from people’s past and history.

This website was established because of heritage forms that were held back in 2012.

Yvonne Jones

Yvonne Jones represents the district of Labrador as a member of the Liberal Party for Newfoundland and Labrador.

She was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in a by-election on May 13th, 2013.

Jones has been to the North coast communities and is currently here in Nain for her campaigns for the Federal Elections Day, Monday, October 21st, 2019.

To place your vote for the federal elections you must be a Canadian citizen at the age of at least 18 years of age on Election Day.

Advance polling stations will be available in your community on October 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th.

Inuttitut Master Wanted

The Dept of Language, Culture & Tourism is looking for a Master to teach one (1) Apprentice Inuttitut for 10-20 hours per week until the end of March 2020.

Shirley Jararuse is the Language Program Coordinator with Nunatsiavut Government.

She says this is a paid position and the schedule can be made up between the Master and Apprentice.

If you are eager to help with Inuttitut revitalization, this is a great job for you!

Young Girls Empowerment and Personal Development Program

The Young Girls Empowerment & Personal Development program will be held in Nain this November.

This program was postponed and is now rescheduled for November 4-8th 2019.

Heather Angnatok is the Regional Youth Administrator.

She says this program is aimed for young girls aged from 13-18.

Youth can be from the communities of Happy Valley Goose Bay, North West River, Nain, Rigolet, Makkovik, Postville, Hopedale Nain and 1 person from the Canadian Constituency.

The intent of the program is to educate and promote healthy lifestyles through informal discussions and interactions that will empower young girls with confidence, pride and self-esteem throughout Inuit traditions and cultural practices.

During the program door prizes will be drawn, and the main purpose is to encourage, promote, empower, educate and engage all young girls.

Youth will learn how to budget, learn how to have self care, and much more.

The Alumni Sports Meet will be held in Nain next week from Thursday, October 10th to the 14th, 2019.

She says they are looking for 16 Billets for this upcoming Sports Meet.

What Made Me Strong Program

The DHSD Staff will be holding a Program called “What Made Me Strong” early next week.

Hayley and Donna Ronan are the therapists with Key Assets.

They travel to Nain each month with the Nunatsiavut Government MMIWG Program.

Elsie Russell who is the Mental-Health and Addictions Counsellor for the DHSD here in Nain will be hosting this program on Tuesday, October 8, from 7-8:30 pm at the Nigivik Center.

She says this will be a drop-in to talk about the things that make us strong.
