Yvonne Jones on Ferry Service

Since Monday, September 30th, the Kamutik W has been weather bound in the community of Rigolet.

MP Yvonne Jones has traveled all along the North Coast of Labrador.

She said she has had discussions with the Government and the Woodward Group of Companies about the meals and rooms being covered.

Jones also got a Boat Plane for the passengers to travel home today.

Nunatsiavut Government News (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Government will be holding a Language Workshop on October 19-20th and a Language Summit on November 4-the 6th.

Jim Lyall is the Minister for Language, Culture and Tourism for Nunatsiavut government and the Ordinary Member for Nain.

He says it’s a workshop that will give people tips on how to teach the Inuktitut language.

Lyall adds the workshop is for the Inuktitut teachers for their Master/Apprentice program.

Nain and Makkovik Fish Plant Update

The Nain fish plant is slowing down and it will shut down next week.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Office Supervisor for the plant.

She says there are 9 employees cleaning up the fish plant.

Kohlmeister says 815 lbs of shucked scallops has been landed to date.

She adds there are cod fillets, smoked char, crab claws and legs to sell at the fish plant if anyone is interested.

And all the fish products will be shipped on the next boat.

In Makkovik fish plant they also slowed down for the Fall.

Junior Andersen is the Production Manager for the plant.

He says there 22 employees working at the plant.

Andersen says 42,700 lbs of Turbot has been landed to date.

He says there is one Turbot boat fishing and they need 12,000 more pounds of Turbot and they will be finished fishing for the Fall.

Nunatsiavut Art Strategy

The Department of Language, Culture and Tourism is creating a Nunatsiavut Arts Strategy.

Chantelle Evans and Judy Wolfe are the Arts Consultant for Nunatsiavut Government.

Evans says they will be visiting all the Nunatsiavut communities this month.

The community consultations will be held in Rigolet on October 6 at the community hall starting at 7-9pm.

And in Postville at the Recreation Hall on October 8th from 7-9 pm then in Hopedale at the Assembly building on October 10 from 7-9 pm.

The following day they will hold their consultations in Nain at the Pulapvik room on October 11 from 7-9 pm and in Makkovik at the Arena Multipurpose room on October 15 from 7-9 pm.

Inuttitut Master Wanted

The Dept of Language, Culture & Tourism is looking for a Master to teach one (1) Apprentice Inuttitut for 10-20 hours per week until the end of March 2020.

Shirley Jararuse is the Language Program Coordinator with Nunatsiavut Government.

The schedule is flexible and can be made up between you both. This is a paid position.

Gas Down, Heating Fuel Up Today

There is a break at the pumps today, but there’s an increase in some home heating fuels.

The regulated price of gas has dropped by just over a cent a litre. (1.3) Diesel is also down – by nearly 2 cents a litre on the island (1.8) and over two cents a litre in Labrador. (2.3)

Furnace oil is also down by less than a cent a litre. (0.08)

Stove oil is up however by close to a cent, while propane used for heating is up by three and a half cents a litre. (3.5)

Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease is caused by a virus. Typically the infection occurs in children, but can occur at any age. Outbreaks are common in the summer and fall. Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease is not usually a severe illness but can be very uncomfortable.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease is found in saliva and stool. It can spread easily from one person to another by direct or indirect contact with infected persons or with soiled articles. The virus can also live for several days on hard surfaces.

The symptoms are Fevers, Headache, Sore Throat, Loss of appetite, Vomiting and/or diarrhea, Small painful mouth ulcers, Rash of red spots often with small blisters. Rashes may appear on palms of hands, soles of feet, buttocks and sometimes on other parts of your body.

There is no treatment for this infection. Antibiotics will not make it go away. This infection may last for 7-10 days and can be contagious for up to 2 weeks from the onset of illness.

Parents can keep your child comfortable and continue to offer foods and drinks. Do not give fruit juice if there are mouth ulcers, you can ensure that everyone in your home wash their hands daily, Do not pop blisters, Leave your child home from school, and seek medical care if you are concerned about your child’s health.

Prenatal Class

The Department of Health and Social Development has partnered with the Nain Family Resource Center for a Weekly Prenatal Class for expecting parents.

Joanne Moores is the Public Health Nurse with DHSD.

The Prenatal Classes will be held each week for 5 weeks every Wednesdays starting 5pm, located at the Family Resource Center.

Last week they held their first Prenatal Class.

They are doing the classes a bit different this year, they will begin with preparing a healthy meal that is an affordable price, and everyone will prepare the meal, than begin on the Topics.

Your partner and your child/children are also welcome to attend this program. The FRC Staff will have events planned for your child/children while the meal is being prepared, along with during the class.

The topics for this 5 week class began with Nutrition, than 9 months of Change, Labour and Delivery, Post Partum, and Breastfeeding. At the end of each class there will be a door prize, and the prize is a box of food items of what has been prepared that evening of each class.

New Department Name

The Nunatsiavut Government’s Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism has been renamed Language, Culture and Tourism. The change, approved through an amendment to the Nunatsiavut Government Organization Order, was necessary to reflect a renewed emphasis on promoting, protecting and revitalizing Inuktitut, says the department’s minister, Jim Lyall.

“We are very excited with the name change,” says Minister Lyall. “We have been putting a lot of effort into our language over the past two years. The new name shows the commitment of our government in finding ways to ensure our language not only survives, but flourishes.”

Boys Regional X-Country Running Competition

The Jens Haven Memorial School Huskies recently came back from the Boys Regional X-Country Running competition.

Ms. Juanita Skanes is the Vice Principal at the JHM School.

Three schools took part in this year’s competition; The Mealy Mountain Collegiate School from Happy Valley Goose Bay came in first place followed by the Menihek High School from Labrador City and our very own Jens Haven Memorial Huskies came in third place.

The competition took place at the Mealy Mountain Collegiate School in Happy Valley-Goose Bay last Saturday on September 28, 2019.

She says the huskies came in third place followed by the Mealy Mountain Collegiate School from HVGB and the Menihek High school from Labrador City.

They arrived back home this Sunday September 29.

The boys who traveled to the competition from the JHMS Huskies were:

Ms Julie Dicker was the chaperone and coach for the JHMS Huskies.
