Adam Lidd is an Elder from Nain.

He says they would go seal hunting on motor boats in those days.

Lidd says they used nets sometimes to get seals.

He adds they would play games as well.

Caring For Our Children Project (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Government Department of Health and Social Development recently hired on a new Foster Home Recruitment and Retention Social Worker for their new project “Caring for our children”.

Krista Mogridge is the Foster Home Recruitment and Retention Social Worker for NG.

She says their main goal is to support current caregivers who live within Nunatsiavut as well as recruiting new caregivers.

This project initially started in 2010.

Because of the big demand in Nunatsiavut for children who are under care with (CSSD) Child Protection Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development.

An independent review of Inuit children in Newfoundland and Labrador’s child protection system says the current system is “crisis” and lacks respectful involvement of Inuit families and culture.

Makkovik Gas Station Attendants

The Woodward’s Oil Ltd. in Makkovik is looking for a full time Service Station Attendant.

Reg Coombs is the Coastal Manager for Woodward’s Oil; his office is in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

He says this position is 5 days a week from Monday to Friday, Hours of operation are from: 9 am – 5 pm.

Qualifications for this position are:
• Must be age majority of 19 and up
• Have High School Education or Equivalent
• Must be bondable and able to pass security screening
• Good with being in public
• Ability to work alone or with minimal supervision
• Drivers license is optional

Responsibilities include:
• Dispensing fuel products to customers in a professional and timely manner.
• Completion of daily and weekly sales reports like balancing cash and charge sales.
• Inventory control-reports to be completed on a weekly basis

Minor Hockey Equipment Donations

The Nain Minor Hockey League received a huge donation this past weekend.

Brent Denniston is one of the coaches for the Nain Minor Hockey team.

There was a total of $25,000 worth of equipment donated from the Adventure Canada, Cruise Ship.

Denniston says the Cruise Ship made it in to Nain on Saturday September 28, 2019.

He says the equipment that was donated was all CCM brand equipment and hockey sticks.

The Adventure Canada gave a tour on the Cruise Ship to the Minor Hockey League.

Denniston adds that the Minor Hockey League will start around December or January, depending on the weather.

Community Freezer

The OKâlaKatiget Society has contacted all the communities freezers along the North Coast.

In Postville, we spoke to Shirley Goudie the Town Manager; she says they have Char, and a couple of fruits and vegetables.

In their Food Bank they have tea bags, sugar, milk, butter, coffee, spaghetti, macaroni, soup, oat meal, and cereal.

In Rigolet, Chelsea Shiwak is the Town Clerk; she says they have red berries, crab claws, shrimp, and cod.

In the community of Makkovik, we spoke with Marilyn Faulkner who is the Office Assistant; she says they have nothing in their freezer.

In Nain, we spoke with Liz Pijogge who is the Northern Contaminants Researcher; she says they have fresh char and seal meat.

Pijogge adds that the char will be shared all along the North Coast and to Upper Lake Melville.

And in the community of Hopedale, we spoke with Pamela Freida who is the Food Security Coordinator; Freida says they had a big donation from the Hunts River Camp supplies such as chicken, fillet cod, and beef.

And in their freezer, they have ducks, mattak, smelts, capelin, and smoked trout.

Yvonne Jones (Audio)

On Monday October 21, 2019 is the Federal Elections day.

To place your vote for the federal elections you must be a Canadian citizen at the age of at least 18 years of age on Election Day.

Advance polling stations will be available in your community on October 11, 12, 13 and 14.

We spoke with Yvonne Jones who represents the district of Labrador as a member of the Liberal Party for Newfoundland and Labrador.

She was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in a by-election on May 13, 2013.

Jones is currently in Hopedale for her campaigns and will be traveling to the north coast communities.

Expression of Interest

The Dept. of Culture, Recreation & Tourism is planning to hold a Language Summit in Nain from November 4th to 6th, 2019.

This Summit will consist of about 50 individuals.

They are seeking:

– 2 Caterers to prepare 4 snacks and 2 dinners
– 3 Drivers (must have own vehicle)

Hopedale Assembly Results

The Nunatsiavut Assembly was held in Hopedale for the September sitting.

Edward Blake Rudkowski is the Speakers for Nunatsiavut.

They hold 5 scheduled meetings, 5 times a year and meet every September.

During the assembly, the trust and board members of the Labrador Inuit Capital Strategy Trust attended this years meeting.

They also had Mr. Chris Webb with the NCG Nunatsiavut Group of Companies and one senior staff, Darryl Shiwak in attendance.

He says change is an ongoing process and they are constantly trying to evolve as a government.

They have a full complement of ministers who manage their departments and are constantly trying to provide a better lever of service to all beneficiaries.

Rudkowski says they had 6 or 7 invited guests for the presentation of the trust and they had a couple guests who sat in during the ferry discussion.

The past emotion is going to be making a request to the premier of NFLD and Labrador Mr. Dwight Ball and his minister of transportation to meet with the AngajukKât as well as our First Minister Kate Mitchell to discuss the concerns that Nunatsiavut Government has about the quality of the ferry service that has been provided since the new boat was in operation.

NunaKatiget Annual General Meeting

The NunaKatiget Inuit Community Corporation Inc. will hold their Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Moravian Church Annex today, September 30, 2019.

This will be for Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries in Mud Lake and Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

They will be holding an election for two (2) board members for three year terms.

There will be light refreshments and door prizes to be distributed.

Language Workshop

The Culture, Recreation and Tourism will be holding a Language Workshop on October 19 and 20, 2019.

Experienced community language professionals will teach 3-hour classes in Inuk spelling, language structure, teaching and linguistic analysis.

The classes will help you improve your reading and spelling skills in Inuttitut, increase your understanding of the grammatical structure of the language, successful methods of teaching it, and the skills for documenting and analyzing your own language.

They are also inviting the Masters that are involved in their Master Apprentice Program and all Inuttitut teachers from along the Nunatsiavut communities.
