Labrador Marine Inc. announced today that due to continued severe ice conditions on the Strait of Belle Isle, it is implementing an interim service from Blanc Sablon, Quebec to Corner Brook.

The Labrador Marine Inc. will utilize its north coast vessel, the Kamutik W for the Blanc Sablon to Corner Brook run, where it’s favourable travel.

The Kamutik W will depart Lewisporte for Blanc Sablon this evening, Thursday, February 20th and will carry both private vehicle and commercial traffic.

She is expected to arrive Blanc Sablon tomorrow afternoon.

Further details, including Bland Sablon-Corner Brook schedule will be released on Friday through the Labrador Marine Inc. website and Public media.

Annual George Lane Dart Tournament in Hopedale

The 15th Annual George Lane Dart tournament is welcoming all dart players from all communities to take part in Hopedale.

This will be held on March 20th and the 21st at the Nanuk Center starting at 6 pm on Friday and Saturday at 9 am.

There will be 4 players per team, 2 male and 2 female.

To register your team, the fee is $80 per team, $20 per player.

Prizes for 1st place will be $2,000, 2nd place $1000 and $500 for 3rd place.

There will also be trophies for various categories.

The deadline to register your team is March 19th at 5 pm.

Amaguk will be serving dinner and supper with delivery and menus will be available to view at the Nanuk Center.

Requests For Bids On Moose Harvest

Sealed bids are being accepted from beneficiaries interested in harvesting one moose allocated under the Nunatsiavut Government 2019-2020 moose management plan.

Bids must include the slaughter, butchering, distribution and disposal of meat to the community as determined by the Makkovik Inuit Community Government.

In addition, the antlers, (if any,) to remain with the Makkovik Inuit Community Government.

All tools, fuel, ammunitions, packaging and supplies associated with the above is to be covered under the bid.

Please note that the moose must be harvested by March 31st, 2020.

Please submit your sealed bid amount inside envelope to the council office by Friday, February 21st, 2020 at 4 pm.

Rigolet Gas Station

The Senior Manager Advisory has an opening to buy and own the Rigolet gas station to work and operate the property.

Nick Lane is the Senior Manager Advisory with the Binder Dijker Otte (BDO).

The requirements to buy the property:
-Has to have a clear criminal record or criminal lawsuit,
-Able to meet with regulatory regulations that has to do with taxes, and environmental, product labeling, business licenses and motor fuel licenses
-Got to have the hours to keep it open
-Must have insurance requirements

There are four fuel tanks that are owned by the Rigolet Inuit Community Government, two gas pumps, the purchase building and the land as the assets.

B&J Tournament

The 18th Annual Bernard & Jeffery Webb Memorial Ice hockey tournament is fast approaching.

We spoke with Lisa Ivany who is the Recreation Director with NICG.

The tournament is this weekend and starts Friday, February 21st to Sunday, February 23rd 2020.

Ivany says there are 6 teams who will compete in the tournament. They are:

-Team North Stars from Makkovik
-Team Gracie from Nain
-Team Warriors
-Team Gussie
-Team Old Timers and
-Team Redcats

The admission fee to watch the tournament is $1 per person.

Ivany says that if anyone wants to sell food or help fundraise can talk to her.

She adds that she needs a referee to help with the tournament, can be from anywhere and will get paid.

100th Day of School

The Jens Haven Primary School will be celebrating their 100th Day of School tomorrow, Wednesday, February 19th, 2020.

To celebrate, they are asking the children to dress up like they are 100 years old, and here are some ideas to get started:

For the girls, they are asked to wear printed skirt, pearls, eyeglasses, sweater, a wig or curled hairstyle, knee high stockings, a large purse, and a scarf.

For the boys, they are asked to wear a button down shirt, vest, flannel shirt, suspenders, tie, eyeglasses, mustache or beard, and grey hair.

They are also given a choice to decorate a hat or shirt with 100 items or bring in a collection of 100 items.

The suggested items are buttons, Q-tips, macaroni, or whatever your imagination can come up with.

The Makkovik J.C Erhardt Memorial school will also be celebrating our 100th day of school tomorrow.

They are inviting all members of the community to take part in a parade through town at 1 pm tomorrow.

Hans Rholmann on Nain Moravian Church Anniversary from 2015 (Audio)

The Nain Moravian Church celebrates its Anniversary tomorrow, Wednesday, February 19th.

This year marks its 249th of the Moravian Church, where it was established in 1771.

Most town businesses are closed for the special day and OKalaKatiget Society is one of those.

OK radio spoke with Hans Rholmann who is from the Religious Studies at Memorial University in St.John’s, the interview was done back in 2015.

NL Premier Stepping Down

Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced yesterday he is stepping down, after just over four years in the provinces top job.

Saying, its time to lead a more private life.

In a video released publicly at 6 pm yesterday Monday, Ball says he approached the President of the Liberal Party of NL this afternoon to launch the leadership process.

Liberal Party President, John Allan says the board will meet today to discuss the next move to replace Mr. Ball.

The party AGM is scheduled for June, but sources tell VOCM news a leadership convention will take place before then- possibly within 2 to 3 months.

Ball outlined what he called a “decade of demanding political life, including 8 years as Liberal Leader”, his role now is as an agent of renewal. He wants to live a more private life with his family and friends in Deer Lake.

He will stay on as Premier until a new leader is in place.

The Nunatsiavut Government Status of Women office is looking for 2 Inuit women from Nain and 1 woman from Rigolet to attend a 2 day workshop in Goose Bay.

Tracy Ann Evans Rice is the Status of Women Coordinator with Nunatsiavut Government.

She says this workshop will be held on February 24th and 25th.

The workshop will focus on communication skills of public speaking and proposal writing.

Torngat Mountains Caribou Information Session

There will be a Torngat Mountains Caribou Information Session tomorrow, Tuesday, February 18th, 2020.

In March and April, a third survey to estimate the abundance of Torngat Mountains caribou herd will take place as part of an ongoing monitoring program.

There will be a brief presentation on the results of past monitoring, followed by an open discussion on caribou distribution, methodologies, and issues.

Please join in to discuss caribou monitoring, and provide on this year’s survey design.

A translator will be present to assist with communication and all are welcome to attend.
