The Standards of Practice as set out by the Newfoundland and Labrador Pharmacy Board and the Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador, requires Labrador-Grenfell Health to change the way medications are dispensed at its community clinics along the Labrador coast.

As a result, the community clinics in Postville, Makkovik and Rigolet will no longer be dispensing long-term prescriptions as of March 2nd, 2020. This change in dispensing services has previously occurred in Nain and Hopedale.

This change promotes and protects the rights and responsibilities of clients and follows regulatory standards and best practices for the dispensing of medications.

Clients are responsible to:

1. Contact the community clinic in your area to review active prescription (s).

2. Make an appointment at the clinic one a month before prescription (s) need to be renewed. (This information can be found on the label of prescription medications.)

3. Choose a community pharmacy to transfer any active prescriptions from the clinic. (Labrador Grenfell Health can fax new prescriptions to the community pharmacy chosen by clients, if required.)

4. Discuss medication pick-up/delivery and arrange payment with the community pharmacy. (Only medications filled at pharmacies in Happy Valley-Goose Bay may be picked up at the community clinic in your area.)

Labrador-Grenfell Health will continue to have a small supply of medications in case they are required by clients on short notice. The clinic will continue to provide acute-care medications.

The 18th Annual Bernard and Jeffrey Webb Memorial Ice Hockey Tournament was a good turnout this past weekend.

The tournament was from Friday, February 21st to Sunday the 23rd.

There were a total of 5 local teams; the other teams could not make it in due to weather.

Here are the results from the tournament:

1st place went to Team Warriors
2nd place went to Team Old-Timers, and
3rd place went to the Bantam/Midget/Female Red Cats

Team Gracie got awarded the Most Sports-Minded team.

William Flowers would like to thank the girls who traveled from St. John’s, Goose Bay and Makkovik to participate in the tournament.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the tournament and got their place.

The tournament will be going on until Sunday, February 23rd, 2020.

The Recreation posted the schedule for the tournament and here they are:

Starting this evening at 6:30 pm with Taylor Webb dropping the puck
Team Red Cats will be playing against the Warriors
Then the Old Timers vs. Makkovik North Star at 8 pm
And Team Gussie and Team Grace will be playing at 9:30 pm

At 8 am tomorrow morning will be Team Grace vs. The Old Timers
The Makkovik North Star vs. Red Cats at 9:30 am
Warriors vs. Team Gussie at 11 am
At 12:30 pm will be Makkovik North Star vs. Team Grace
2 pm will be Red Cats vs. Team Gussie
3:30 pm will be Warriors vs. Old Timers
Team Grace and Red Cats at 5 pm
Team Gussie vs. the Old Timers at 6:30 pm
Followed by that will be Makkovik North Star vs. Warriors at 8 pm.

And on Sunday the 23rd starting at 9 am will be the Red Cats vs. The Old Timers
Makkovik North Star vs. Team Gussie at 10:30 am
And then Team Grace vs. Warriors will be at 12 noon.

The semi finals will be starting at 2 pm with Game #1 with 1st place team vs. the 4th place team, and Game #2 will be 2nd place team vs. 3rd place team at 4 pm.

The finals championship games will be starting at 6pm with the Bronze medal game and the gold medal game starting at 8 pm.

There will be a Food Bank Giveaway next Thursday, February 27th, 2020.

The TaKuaKautik Food Bank is run completely by volunteers.

And Tuesday the 25th is the last day to place your orders for the food distribution.

You must fill out the intake forms that can be picked up at the Clinic, Nunatsiavut Government building, Family Connections Staff, and the Nigivik Centre.

They would also like to remind the community that the TaKuaKautik will be handing out food on the one day a month that is designated and advertised.

If you miss this date, you will have to wait until the next month to pick up any ordered food.

The Community Health Aid will be hosting a Nikkuk Making at the Rigolet Department of Health and Social Development.

Carly Blake is the Community Health Aid with the Rigolet DHSD.

She says it will take place in the Kitchen at the DHSD Building starting at 1pm on February 25th to 26th, 2020.

She adds that no one have yet registered, so be sure to apply.

According to the NTV website, two people from Newfoundland and Labrador have died this year as a result of the flu.

According to the Department of Health’s weekly report stating from January 26 to February 2020.

1, there were 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza reported. For the flu season, there have been a total of 146 cases confirmed.

As of Feb. 1, there have been 22 hospitalizations and three ICU admissions.

The rate of influenza across the country remains high.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, 71 per cent of all cases reported to regional health authorities, involved people aged 45 years or younger.

The province is reminding everyone the flu shot (Influenza vaccination) remains one of the best methods to protect you and your children and prevent the spread of the virus.

The Nunatsiavut Group of Companies is here in Nain and will be travelling along the coast within the next month.

They say they recently donated some jerseys to the Nain Minor Hockey.

Someone will be pretty lucky to win a new snowmobile this evening.

The Nain Recreation Department will be drawing a ticket on the 2019 Skandic Wide Track 900 Ace snowmobile at 7 pm tonight.

Lisa Ivany is the Recreation Director.

She says they have been selling tickets on this snowmobile since October 2019.

The Nunatsiavut Government Presidential elections are held every four years on the first Tuesday of May.

This year’s election will take place on May 5th, 2020 and the nominations are set to close on March 31st, 2020.

Details on the locations, timing and broadcasting of the debate have yet to be determined.
