Torngat Fish Producers Co-operative Society, Limited will be holding their Community Meetings and Annual General Meeting in Labrador on the following dates:

Community Meetings:

Rigolet: Tuesday May 1, 2018 at the Council Chambers beginning at 7 pm.

Postville: Wednesday May 2, 2018 at the Community Hall beginning at 10:30 am.

Makkovik: Wednesday May 2, 2018 at the Community Town Hall beginning at 7 pm.

Nain: Thursday May 3, 2018 at the Nunatsiavut Government Building Board Room at 7 pm.

Two delegates will be elected from each community to attend the annual General Meeting.

The Annual General Meeting will be held in Hopedale on May 23, 2018 at the Nunatsiavut assembly Building Board room beginning at 7 pm.

A Chest X-ray machine to screen for tuberculosis is now operational in Nain, NL.

Antoinette Cabot is a Director with Labrador-Grenfell Health, and she oversees the Tuberculosis program.

Cabot says that the Chest X-ray machine arrived in Nain on Friday, April 6th, 2018.

It was first put to use last Tuesday, April 10th.

As of Friday April 13th, there were 65 x-rays completed and transferred to Eastern Health to the radiology department in St. John’s, NL.

Cabot adds that she would like to thank their partners and acknowledge them, because getting the x-ray machine to Nain and having it operational and the radiologist be able to read images in St. John’s was not an easy task.

The National Film Board of Canada’s Quebec and Atlantic Studio and LJH Films are reaching out to emerging and established Nunatsiavummiut filmmakers from or in Labrador who have an interest in documentary storytelling, with a call for submissions for the Labrador Doc Project.

Three participants will be chosen to direct their own short films in Nunatsiavut, plus there are opportunities for applicants in a wide range of filmmaking positions.

The Labrador Doc Project is looking for stories that surprise-and deepen Inuit’s understanding of them.

The Project’s goal is to collaborate with established and emerging Nunatsiavummiut artists, ages 18 and up.

The Labrador Doc Project will support projects that are 10-15 minutes in length, located in Nunatsiavut, and realized over five shooting days.

Project directors are invited to e-mail a short proposal to Stephen Agluvak Puskas at s.puskas@nfb.ca, stating the story ideas, your personal connection to them, and why you want to tell these stories, no later than today, April 13, 2018.

NFB producers will choose three stories, and notify the successful applicants by May 4, 2018.

The OKâlaKatiget Society has a job opening for a Television Producer.

Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

– Identifying story ideas and conducting research
– Operating camera, lighting and audio equipment
– Planning and conducting interviews and sources
– Outlining and writing scripts for editing
– Transcribing
– Digitally editing film on avid software

The closing date is Wednesday, April 25, 2018, and applications should be forwarded before 4:30 pm.

Preferences will be given to Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

Applicants are preferred to be bilingual in Inuktitut and English as well.

Community healing and commemoration sessions are designed for former students to tell the stories of their residential school experiences.

Sessions will be facilitated by Jim Igloliorte and attended by health support workers.

A sharing circle started this morning in Nain at 9 am, and runs until 5 pm today at the Pulâpvik Room in the Parks Canada building.

Rides are available upon request for residential schools survivors only.

If you need a ride, you can call either Reginald Maggo at 922-1210, or Richard Okkuatsiak at 922-1985.

Individual sessions will be available at the Pulâpvik Room tomorrow for those who need them.

Survivors are asked to make appointments with Igloliorte for this.

The Nain Inuit Community Government employees seem to have a busy summer ahead of them.

OK Radio spoke with Joe Dicker, AngajukKâk for Nain.

Dicker says that the NICG has quite a bit going on this summer.

Budgell’s, now known as BERA, was awarded a contract for building 30 new lots for a housing subdivision near Trouser Lake.

Dicker adds that new chambers have to be replaced as well.

This year’s Polar Bear season opened on February 2nd, 2018, and all the bears have been harvested in Nunatsiavut.

Jim Goudie is the Wildlife Manager for the Nunatsiavut Government.

He says when the hunters kill their bears, they keep the pelts, or sell them internationally.

Goudie says they have one or two more kills to come in yet to be weighed, and the lengths of the bears need to be measured as well.
