Makkovik CEEP

The Makkovik (CEEP) Community Employment Enhancement program is into its third week.

Eight persons were hired to assist seniors and other persons in the community with various tasks. Snowclearing, chopping wood etc.

The provincial government contributed $18,000 for this program to assist persons in qualifying for Employment insurance.

Two of the persons hired have already successfully completed their work term to qualify for E.I.

OK Radio will have more from the other communities once they become available.

Remembrance Day Commemoration Held

This coming Sunday, November 11, is Remembrance Day.

In honour of that, the Jens Haven Memorial School held a Remembrance Day Commemoration today.

Two students did the introduction, and were the MC’s (Master of Ceremonies).

Sue Webb then gave a prayer.

Jim Lyall, one of the Ordinary members for Nain, gave a speech on behalf of the Nunatsiavut Government.

AngajukKâk Joe Dicker gave a speech on behalf of the Nain Inuit Community Government.

Teacher Christine Nolan performed the Last Post on the trumpet.

Everyone paused for a minute of silence.

Then, an RCMP officer did the Act of Remembrance.

The Flanders Fields poem was recited by grade 6 students.

Students from each grade, accompanied by a Junior Canadian Ranger and a Canadian Ranger, did the pinning of the Poppies.

The Choir then sang Bring him Home.

Then the winners of the drawing and poetry contest were announced.

The Choir sang O’ Canada to end off the ceremony.

Gas Prices

George Murphy, Spokesperson for Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices was pretty well spot on in his predictions for this week’s fuel price increases.

The regulated price of gas is down by close to 4 cents a litre (3.8) and the PUB has set this week’s diesel price drop at 3 and a half cents a litre (3.5).

When it comes to furnace and stove oil, prices are also down by about 3 cents and residential propane is cheaper this week by a cent a litre.

This the fourth straight week for gas prices to drop.

Moose Hunt and Catch Logs (Audio)

The Moose Hunt that took place in Gros Morne, NL was another success this fall.

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable Resources for Nunatsiavut Government.

He says they harvested the moose with the 30 approved licences for Nunatsiavut and Upper Lake Melville.

Broomfield and three of NG Conservation Officers partnered with four local Gros Morne hunters for the hunt.

He says once the Moose meat is shipped to Goose Bay, they will be distributed to the north coast communities.

Remembrance Day

The Jens Haven Memorial School will be holding their annual Remembrance Day celebration tomorrow November 08, 2018.

We spoke with Jacob Larkin the principal at JHMS.

He says starting at 11 am this celebration will take place at the 4-12 school gym.

This is open to the public.

This year there will be guests and veterans and grandchildren of veterans who will be in attendance, the Nain RCMP will be present and the Nain Mayor Joe Dicker will be there for this year’s celebrations.

Canadians are asked to pause in memory of the thousands of men and women who sacrificed their lives in military service.

The OKalâKatiget Radio staff will be attending at the Remembrance Day ceremony.

Attention Artists

The Tradition and Transition are looking for artists to help create a logo or a visual that will be used on printed and digital materials associated with the OkKak 1918 commemoration activities over the coming months.

They will be accepting original artwork submissions from Nunatsiavut beneficiaries in any two –dimensional form such as painting, sketching, or a photograph.

Entries will be brought to the OkKak 1918 Commemoration Committee for consideration.

The selected artist will receive $250.

Jobe J Tornament

The 23rd Annual Jobe J Flowers Memorial Volleyball Tournament is scheduled for November 9th and 10th, 2018 in Hopedale.

The new deadline to register your teams is today, Wednesday, November 7th at 8:00 PM.

Boas Mitsuk who is the Recreation Director for Hopedale.

There is Male and female divisions, each team must consist of a minimum of four players or a maximum of six players.

Fees will be $10.00 a player and, fees must be paid before your first Game.

Mitsuk says as of right now there are seven women’s teams and five men’s team registered.

There are two women’s teams from Natuashish and one men’s team from Natuashish.

They have mixed teams consisting of players from Nain, Makkovik, Postville and Sheshatshiu.

When Crossovers are determined, NO team can add players only play with the ones registered.

There will be absolutely no tolerance for drugs and alcohol.

Nellie Winters (Audio)

It is always good to hear stories from Elders.

Nellie Winters is an Elder and lives in Makkovik.

She says just recently there were a lot of people at the bon fire night, almost everyone was there.

Winters says people are working on the wharf and she thinks that will take another two weeks to work yet.

Gas Prices

George Murphy is predicting a dip at the pumps this week.

Murphy says gasoline is set to drop just under four cents per litre (3.8 cpl) while diesel fuel (3.1 cpl) is predicted to drop by about 3 cents per litre.

As for heating and stove oils, they are down by about the same amount this week as well.

Murphy says this is the last week where he will have seven day data ahead of price changes.

Kelly Fraser Tour

Nunatsiavut will be welcoming Kelly Fraser, who is originally from Sanikiluaq, Nunavut.

Fraser sings and raps in both English and Inuktitut.

Her performance is seamlessly blending the two languages with her powerful, insightful, and politically-relevant lyrics.

Fraser’s album, Sedna recently received a nomination from the Juno awards 2018 for indigenous album of the year and a nomination from the indigenous music awards for best pop album.

She has been through many personal struggles and uses her pain as inspiration to make art that can positively impact other Native Youth.

Fraser seeks to spread her messages of joy, healing, and cultural pride through a blend of traditional Inuit music and modern production.

Besides her busy schedule recording and as a performing artist, Fraser teaches Inuktitut language lessons, does cultural and motivational speaking, teaches song writing, and helps to organize Nunavut Hitmakerz, a project which aims to give underprivileged Nunavummiut youth opportunities to learn creative expression and technical skills.

Kelly Fraser will start her tour; starting in Nain this coming Saturday November 10, 2018. She will have a live performance at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre at 6 pm.

The following Sunday November 11, 2018, she will be doing two different workshops, one for youth at the JS centre, and another for grades K-6 from 9-10 am followed by Grades 7+ from 10 am – 12 noon.
