VALE/LATP Travelling to Nain

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership will be traveling to Nain this month to hold their community visits.

Keith Jacque is the Executive Director with LATP.

They will hold their session in Nain at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Center on Wednesday October 16th, from 4-8 pm and again on Thursday, October 17th from 10 am-1 pm and 4-8 pm.

Members of the Nunatsiavut Government and LATP will be present.

Jacque says Vale will provide information on their employment programs, including the Job Readiness Training Program (JRTP) and the Underground (UG) Miner Trainee Program.

You can come by and talk to them in person about your career goals.

He adds you can also bring your resume and or to have it updated, if you do not have a resume they can help assist you create one.

Refreshments and prizes will be drawn during their visit.

Nunatsiavut Children’s Book Project

The Nunatsiavut Government is supporting the development of an educational book, about the children of Nunatsiavut, with an expected publication date of December 2020.

Sylvia Moore is the Institute of Memorial University.

The book will reflect the life of the children through pictures that illustrate their lives on the north coast. For example: children might be picking berries, snowshoeing, or fishing.

The book will be organized in four sections; one for each season.

Parents and family are welcome to submit photos.

All photos should be natural or candid (not looking at the camera).

For the photos chosen for the book, parents/guardians must give consent for use of the photo.

Photos not used in the book may be used in a poster of additional photos that will accompany the book.

Last day for Sports Meet Alumni

This Sunday, October 13th is the last day for the Alumni Sports meet here in Nain.

The schedule for today, October 11th, began at 8:30 am with a Drive through Cross Country Running Course followed by the Women’s Cross Country Run at 9:00 am, and then at 10 am was the Men’s Cross Country Run.

At 10:30, they did Archery and started Volleyball at 1 pm.

This evening starting 6:30 they will go ahead with Inuit Games such as; Seal Crawl, Back to Back and Monkey Dance.

On Sunday, October 13 at 9 am, they will start with the Women’s 50 m relay followed by the Men’s 50 m relay and at 11 they will go ahead with the Women’s Volley-Ball finals.

That afternoon starting at 2 pm they will hold the Men’s Volleyball Finals.

The Athletes Banquet will be held later that evening at 5 pm.

Starting at 6 pm the community is welcome to attend the Awards Night.

On Monday, October 14th the athletes will travel back to their home town.

Good luck to all teams who are participating in this year’s first Alumni sports meet.

Language Summit Coming Up

The Dept. of Language, Culture & Tourism will be holding a Language Summit in Nain on Monday, November 4th-6th, 2019.

The purpose of this summit is to develop a Language Strategy for the Nunatsiavut
Government.

To participate in this summit you must be aged 15 years or older and would like to participate.

Applications can be picked up from your local Community Liaison Officer at your local Nunatsiavut Government office.

The deadline to apply for this Language Summit is on Thursday, October 17, 2019 @ 4:00 pm.

English River Fish Count (Audio)

The English River Fish Count in Postville will be wrapping up soon.

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable Resources for Nunatsiavut Government.

He says 404 salmon, 1731 char and 41 brook trout were counted at the fence this year.

Broomfield says the last day of work will be on Saturday, October the 12th 2019.

Key Assets

Key assets are the children service provider where children are in either foster care or in individual living arrangements.

We spoke with Dave Martin who is the Director of Children and Family Services for Key Assets for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

He says they offer a number of programs that are made to our family based programs and our individually living arrangements.

They established opened five homes and present have six children in their care in Hopedale in 2016.

Nain and Makkovik Fish Plant Update

The Nain fish plant has slowed down for the fall.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Office Supervisor for the plant.

She says there are 6 employees painting the plant, and they doing odds things.

Kohlmeister says tomorrow will be the last day of work.

She adds there are smoked char and crab meat to sell if anyone is interested.

In Makkovik fish plant they are also slowing down.

Junior Andersen is the Production Manager for the plant.

He says there are 22 employees working at the plant.

Andersen says the Turbot boat is finished fishing for the season.

He adds 477,4231 lbs of Turbot has been landed to this date.

Andersen adds there will be one more crab boat that will be going fishing to get their quota of crab.

Day 3 of Alumni Sports Meet

The 1st Alumni Sports Meet will be starting here in Nain today, October 10th and runs until the 14th.

Vyann Andersen is the Mental Health and Addictions Worker with DHSD in Postville.

She says there will be participants from Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik and Rigolet.

As teams arrive today they begin with the Table Tennis Encounters.

Here are the events for Day 3 of the Alumni Schedule;

For Saturday, October 12th, starting at 9 am there will be Women’s 50 m Dash followed by Men’s 50 m Dash at 9:45.

At 10:30 will be the Women’s Running Long Jump and will have the Men’s Running Long Jump at 11 am.

In the afternoon, starting at 1 pm they will begin with the Women’s Ball Throw, 1:45 Men’s Ball Throw.

In the afternoon at 2:30, they will have the Women’s Standing Long Jump and Men’s Standing Long Jump at 3:15.

In the evening at 6 pm, they will have Inuit Games such as Thong pull, and Push ups.

The OKâlaKatiget Radio will air the last day events tomorrow.

Gas Dip in Price for Fuel This Week

Gas is down across the board this week, but just slightly.

The Public Utilities Board says gas is down 2.5 cents per litre while diesel is down by just over one cent per litre.

There is essentially no change with furnace oil as it drops by just 0.4 cents while stove oil drops by one cent.

Propane will see no change.
