The SHEILD initiative have went along the coast for doing up videos

Denise Cole is the Coordinator with the Labrador Friendship Center.

Cole says that they grouped up with the National Centre for collaboration on Indigenous Education to do the project.

Six indigenous youth from along the coast have done the project and went over things that are important to them.

Upcoming B&J Memorial Ice Hockey Tournament

Here are the upcoming tournaments for this month of February 2020.

The 19th annual Bernard & Jeffrey Webb Memorial Ice Hockey Tournament will be held on February 21st to the 23rd.

Lisa Ivany is the Nain Recreation Director.

The tournament will take place at the Nain Husky Centre.

She says the registration fee is $30 for adults and youth who are not in school and $20 for youth who are in school.

The teams will consist with a maximum of 13 players for both adults and children teams.

Ivany says the deadline to apply is tomorrow, February 14th

And from February 28th to February 29th, the North Coast Ball Hockey Tournament will be going ahead in Makkovik.

This non-cash prize tournament will be at the J.C. Erhardt Memorial School gym at 3pm and onwards.

The team must consists of 4 players and a goalie, men must be 14 years and older and females must be 12 years and older.

Each team must pay $100 for the registration fee and the deadline will be February 26th.

Nunatsiavut Government Assembly seeking two youth for the PAGE Program

The Nunatsiavut Government Assembly is looking for two youth to attend to the PAGE Program.

We spoke with Edward Blake-Rudkowski the speaker in the Nunatsiavut Government.

Blake-Rudkowski says the Page program allows two youth to attend to the NG assemblies.

He says they are looking for two youth between the ages of 13-19 years.

Travel and accommodations and meals will be all covered.

Any two youth can apply for these two page positions, youth from all five communities.

There will be posters posted in each school, to see if there are any students interested in attending the Page program.

The deadline to apply hasn’t been made yet, but the next assembly sitting will be held in March.

Blake Rudkowski adds that this is a great program for youth to attend, to see how the Assembly sitting works.

The next Assembly sitting will be held in Hopedale on March 2-4th.

We also spoke with Tabea Onalik who is the Assistant Clerk for the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says every assembly sitting they do rotations for youth to be pages from each community.

Onalik adds that the next assembly will be held in beginning of June and will be accepting applications for pages from Nain.

JHMS Ordering Sweaters and Toques

The Jens Haven Memorial School are doing school clothing orders this year, for the first time in a long time.

The clothing order this year for students and staff includes JHMS Hoodies and Toques.

Prices for the Hoodies will cost $40 and the toques cost $15 each, both prices includes with taxes and shipping.

The sizes that are available are men’s, ladies and youth sizes.

To place an order, you must complete an order form and return the form and money to the JHMS office before February 26th.

Call for nominations and committee (audio)

The Nunatsiavut Government of Language, Culture & Tourism is busy with Inuttitut programs.

We spoke with Shirley Jararuse who is one of the Language Coordinators.

She says they are seeking nominations to acknowledge fluent Inuttitut preservers and role models.

They are also seeking on member from each community to sit on a committee.

Charles J Andrews Treatment center (audio)

The Charles J Andrew Youth Treatment Centre has two components to its Family Healing Program; they are Clinical and a Land-Based Program.

The Charles J Andrew Youth Treatment Centre is located in Sheshatshiu.

Pauletta Tremblett is the Clinical Program and Tracey Doherty is the Client Care Coordinator for the Charles J.

They are in Nain until tomorrow to hold information sessions.

This information session will be happening this evening at 7pm until 9pm at the Illusuak Center.

In this treatment center they focus on programs that are strongly influenced by traditional Aboriginal values, beliefs and practices through spirituality and a reconnection to the Land.

Hans Rholmann on Nain Church Anniversary 2015 (audio)

It will be Exstomiche on Sunday, February 23, 2020.

Within this part of the story, Back in February 2015, OK radio spoke with Hans Rholmann from the Religious Studies at Memorial University in St. John’s.

Rholmann will talk about the meaning of Estomiche before Easter began.

Trail Markers

Trails are being made later this year than last year.

According to the Grand River Snowmobile Club page on Facebook, here is an update on North coast trails.

Trail section in Mudlake and Churchill River crossing marked and groomed.

Trail section from Happy Valley Goose-Bay to Northwest River is marked and groomed by GRSC.

Trail section from Northwest River to Separation Lake is groomed and marked to Mulligan.

No grooming or marking north of Mulligan but condition is fairly good.

Northwest River is planning to send groomer North of Mulligan Monday.

Trail section from Separation Lake to Makkovik and Postville is marked and is ongoing. No grooming due to lack of snow.

Postville to Little Neck and Iggiak on Kaipokok Bay towards Hopedale and Makkovik marking is ongoing.

Trail section from Iggiak to Hopedale not marked due to late freeze up.

Trail section from Hopedale to Natuashish marking is ongoing and roughly 3/4 done.

Trail section from Natuashish to Nain marking is ongoing and is late start due to poor ice conditions.

Trail section from Mulligan to Rigolet is groomed out of Rigolet to Valleys Bite.

Nain DHSD Wooding Program

The Nain DHSD wooding program will go ahead on Thursday, February 13th, 2020.

Rutie Lampe is the Mental Health and Addictions Worker.

She is looking for youth who would like to learn how to go wooding, and is also looking for at least 3 guides to help with the driving and teaching the youth how to get wood.

They have only four snowmobiles enough to take eight people.

So, if anyone would like to help with their snowmobiles for rental for that day for $75 per day can help out, gas provided.

Lampe adds that they have enough gas for two more snowmobiles and will also need two more Kamutet.

Hopedale community event (audio)

The community of Hopedale had a wonderful turnout to celebrate their journey on healing and to strengthen their home community.

This event took place at the Nanuk Center last evening.

McKinley Winters is the Team Leader at the Hopedale DHSD.

Winters says this is in collaboration with the Community Mobile Trauma and Addictions Healing team with the DHSD staff.

A community feast was held at 5pm and ended at 8:30 last evening and approximately 251 people showed up.

The community feast consisted of Caribou roast, Caribou Nikku, Caribou
Kuak and a desert.

This will be a 4 day event and will finish on Thursday.
